but yeah this is extremely real. in much the same way that the popular fanon!Dean is badly skewed from what Dean is actually like in many, many regards, fanon!Cas is sometimes unrecognizable to me. the Cas I watched for twelve seasons is a reckless, chaotic, absolutely audacious sonuvabitch who is lying through his teeth to someone about something roughly 40% of the time and who will strut right up to someone ten, twenty, a hundred times more powerful than himself and call them a bitch to their face with zero hesitation. and then have the resourcefulness to back that audacity up with action.

he's stubbornly self-reliant to the point that it has caused multiple major catastrophes resulting in many deaths, he's clever and witty in a delightfully understated way, and usually at least twice as aware of what's going on around him as people assume him to be and he uses being underestimated like that to his advantage on multiple occasions. he's prideful to the point of arrogance, and that never really goes away completely even after it's blown up in his face so many times that he's become actively frustrated with himself about it. he's prickly and rude and willing to toss his own ethics out the window at a moment's notice in the interests of protecting the people he loves, because he loves so fiercely with the operative word very much being fierce. fierce like a tiger. fierce like an eagle.

that guy in a lot of popular fanon who is this sort of shrinking, delicate wallflower just desperate for attention from a guy who (again, in fanon) is objectively more trouble than he's worth and who just wants a quiet life to garden and is willing to be walked all over by his crush? I don't know that guy. there are elements of fanon!Cas where I can understand where they came from, I understand which parts of canon were cherry-picked and then warped through a game of fandom telephone to arrive at this conclusion... but just because I can trace the throughlines doesn't mean the end result is familiar to me.

basically, fanon!Cas is this to me:

dean sends every 'hey i really like being with you' message he can - short of crossing a boundary that he's under the impression that cas has drawn. (not even bringing up the tendency cas has to just drop everything and leave with some woman.)

dean is literally killing himself believing that his feelings for cas are gross and destructive because he's pushing something gross and destructive (himself) onto cas and STILL he's out there asking him out for cute little dates, making him have cute little movie nights with him, giving him cute little gifts and cas is the one going yeah okay i gotta go now bye i won't call.

to the point dean knows instantly that something is wrong when cas calls him being like heeeey so i'm checking up on you :)

basically dean thinks cas doesn't love him Like That because of a plethora of reasons including cas being an angel, cas fucking off every time something's up, cas occasionally fucking off with some woman, and cas thinks dean doesn't love him like that because?? dean is like "you're the only person i feel genuinely comfortable expressing negative emotions of front of"??

basically, fanon:

cas: deeaaaan

dean: sammyyyyyy moooom babyyyy liiiiterally everyoooone buuuut cas while i pine for him in the dark secret depths of my emotionally constipated heartttt

canon:

dean: oh no did i came on too strong and made cas uncomfortable so he left?? am i a disgusting piece of poison?? ah shit the universe's broken and it's probably my fault

Hardison guesses he shouldn’t be surprised when Eliot has asked the waitress why she’s so upset before they even get their drinks and has a bar patron shoved against a wall in the alley by appetizers the first time they all actually manage to go out to a restaurant that isn’t the brewpub.

“I’m thinking it’s probably that landlord who keeps messing with his tenants’ apartments a few blocks away,” Parker says, thoughtful, while Hardison taps his feet waiting for Eliot to get back before their soup goes cold. “I’ve been meaning to get to him.”

Eliot comes back from the door, looking steamed as hell and pretty satisfied with himself. “I think you may have to move him up the list,” says Hardison.

2.

Parker is the one who insists on going to the zoo, and also the one who finds the display about how they’re trying to save a grizzly from a circus mistreating it but need money for legal fees.

Hardison already knows he isn’t going to get to see the penguins when she looks up from the display, beams at him and Eliot (who was already adopted by three elephants, because he’s Eliot), and says “Okay, then, let’s steal a circus!”

“Can we at least see the penguins before we do?” Hardison asks, but he’s already looking the circus up on his phone.
