Like, when you first die you can’t really do anything, you’re just sort of a wisp of consciousness.

But like over time, you can build up your ability and materialize in different ways, like making apparitions or knocking over objects, eventually talking and stuff.

And like, that’s why some ghosts seem really benign or quiet or inactive and others are able to really fuck with people.

And most apparitions of people dressed like they from the 19th and early 20th century, because younger ghosts don’t have the power to make apparitions yet. 

Maybe there are old ghosts whose time in limbo is coming to a close, and they just don’t have the energy to do much, so they just sort of flit in and out as they fade away.

Like the lifespan of a ghost is probably really long. Hundreds of years. But maybe eventually there’s an end. If you’re patient. Or someone helps you through. 

And maybe some ghosts don’t really make it. They start to lose their minds, become disruptive, abusive. Or they have some awful residual energy from their previous life. They can do scarier stuff because they have stronger emotional energy.
