EQUALITY
Why yes, it does get even weirder. Our president does not read. And if he does, he definitely fails at reading comprehension. I struggle with how we got to this point. How were we so gullible? And I use the collective WE because even though I did not vote for him, I did not do enough to persuade others to NOT VOTE for him. He was constitutionally elected and he is the president. Now we have to figure out how to get him out.Â
As Americans, we cannot lose faith in this spectacular experiment of democracy, started by our founding fathers, and mothers. This has been my greatest fear. His need for power would sicken those of us who believe in our bones that each individual is created equal. Sickness leads to disheartening, to disillusion, to apathy. When we stop caring, that is when all hope is lost and the experiment has failed. It fails when we give up. I have found ways to make sure I do not give up. One, is this blog. So far, I have not hopped on here every day or moment to vent when something happens and I feel pissed, but the option is always there. Nice to know I have a place to thought dump. Another thing I have done is read The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels by Jon Meacham. Having a historical perspective on what we have faced in the past has helped me to face the emotions I confront when I read and/or see the news as it is happening today. As a nation, we have been in horrible spots before. When we stick to the principle that ALL PERSONS are created equal, we come out on top. There are rough patches, but America comes out stronger when we make decisions that lead us all toward greater equality.
The holidays are here. I love this time of year. It is when I feel the most myself. Stanlee is harassing his sister. I hear the heater blowing warm air in the room. The house is quiet and I am clicking away on my keyboard. The train is honking in the distance with people going back and forth. I am snuggled in my pajamas, letting my mind relax so I can take on tomorrow. I have not listened to any news in three days. I have to shut it out a lot now. I will start yelling at the radio or tv, as if it can hear me. It makes me angry that the president does not seem to value life. He wants to take away a woman’s right to choose because he values life so much, but yet he cannot feel an ounce of compassion for kids and parents sleeping in refuge camps in Tijuana. When the rain came at the end of this last week, did he not see what they are willing to endure to have a better life for themselves and their children. I just watched and episode of “Dogs” on Netflix. It was about a young man who had to leave Syria before he was drafted by the military there. He had to leave behind his dog. This beautiful dog was part of a loving friendship and bond between him and his closest friends he had to leave behind when he fled to Berlin. His name is Zeus. Zeus makes it to Berlin. One of his friends makes it out of Syria to Lebanon. I cheer these people on for having the courage to want a better life and go after it with all they have. As an American, I cheer them on for wanting to do better, be better, and as the First Lady says, “Be Best”.

Like many Americans, I am confuzzled by how we got here, to this moment, where we have a tv celebrity as our President. I am passionate about this country and love it with every fiber in my body. I could only be me, here, in the United States of America. But when I woke up the morning after the election in November 2016, I was in a state of disbelief. I fell apart that day at work, crying in the bathroom with a co-worker. I felt as though the country I loved had rejected me.Â
My love made me salted caramel cookies to help lessen the pain and anguish I felt. That was about all I ate that day. Everything else looked drab and deadly. The air was filled with a noxious cloud, hovering just above us. If I tried to consume anything else, it might slip in, killing me right where I stood. I saw others eating and breathing in the cloud. Some were not affected at all. Didn’t they see it? Couldn’t they smell the end coming? Those that did smell it and fear it, I shared the cookies with them. They were safe for the moment. It was a childish response to such an adult thing. The world changed overnight and we handled it with salted caramel cookies.
