nevermind that he was standing in front of the worst Victor he might have known, but someone he desperately needed.

That year, there were supposed to be no volunteers. A collection of deaths, injuries, and illness had wiped out the volunteer years in the program. For the first time in a generation, the children of District One would fear July fourth. The unlucky two would go and die.

The untrained older kids weren't good enough for the program, they wouldn't stand a chance against the trained volunteers of Two and Four. The younger trained kids didn't stand a chance on account of age. Never mind the untrained younger kids.

Her hand was never supposed to shoot up during the Reaping. Barely fourteen and untrained. Artemis had always known she wasn't good enough for the program but she couldn't let Iris die. Not after their parents had died.

She was more performer than fighter anyway. Sure, she was confident that she could take out tributes from the outer districts. But not Two and Four. Not unless their districts had been unlucky too. Which would never happen, sometimes Four was unlucky like that but Two never was.

So, off to the Capitol to fight in an arena like her cousin had last year. Golda had nearly come home just to be killed at the end by the girl from Seven. Artemis stopped planning to come home the second the boys name was pulled. Her other cousin, Copper would be coming along with her.

Copper was a boy who should've never seen the inside of an arena. More like a kid than a teenage he spoke very few words. Artemis had doubted he even understood why he was standing on stage. She'd get Copper home or die trying. Her aunt didn't deserve to bury her son a year after burying her daughter.

Of course, he stood no chance—the Gamemakers would never allow it. They couldn't have a victor not even understand the Games. Boys like Copper weren't allowed to win the Games. All that was left was the hope that when death came for him, it would be quick.
