A/N: This… This one is special for me. The words for this one flowed right off of the tips of my fingers to the screen, without me being able to stop. It’s small, but it could be the start of something big. Hope you enjoy reading!
I’d like to dedicate this to @neocitybynight, who has become a very precious friend of mine. This is an early birthday present for you love, I hope you’re smiling! Love you lots xx
Summers always had a different meaning to you. You adored them, adored the summer house you and your family retreated to, adored the closeness to the sea, the small town where everything was in walking distance. You loved the friends you’d made along the way, neighbors mostly, from near houses, retreating to the town much like you did.
But most of all, there is a certain brown haired boy that made summers all the more special to you. Na Jaemin is his name, and every piece of him screams summer to you.
Jaemin is a summer day, tan lines, eyes hidden away behind sunglasses, fun colours and light clothes. Jaemin is the sound of the waves hitting the shore, a small electric fan seemingly glued to your hand and loud music from the beach bar at night. Jaemin tastes like cold watermelon and iced americanos, refreshing and sweet on the one hand, bitter and cold on the other. Jaemin feels like the sun burning your skin as you’re sunbathing, warm and intimate.
Jaemin is laying around on the beach with a book, until your skin is burning. Diving in and competing who can swim faster until you’re both breathless. Jaemin is summer nights, the wind picking up slightly as you read poetry out loud, his head laying leisurely on your lap, listening to the words. Jaemin is lying on your backs at the rooftop, trying to find constellations and watch stars falling.
Jaemin is words whispered with the cover of darkness, drunk texts here and there. Jaemin is baring out your soul knowing all you have to lose, but doing it anyway. Jaemin is going all in or not going at all, locking eyes, soft smiles across rooms, pinkies entwined as you walk side by side.
Jaemin is slow and sensual kisses, marks all over your body for everyone to see. Jaemin is hard loving, the kind of loving that hurt, hurt so much you couldn’t help but want more. Jaemin is the ripping of clothes, urgency to get closer, closer, closer. Jaemin is hard bites at your earlobe and bruised lips.
And Jaemin was goodbyes. Jaemin was your heart ripping in two every summer as you returned home, back to reality. Jaemin was knowing that things wouldn’t change until next year, that your familiar dance around each other would continue.
Until the day you saw them. You had just arrived at your beach house that same day and had already managed to slip away for some slushies in the pier with Renjun. As you walked along the familiar path, you caught a glimpse of light brown hair and a smile you thought you knew. Next to him was a girl, looking at him with tingling eyes, a smile resting easily in her face.
“I didn’t know how to tell you” Renjun said, his voice trailing off.
That was the moment you realised you had been staring. You shook your head, turning your attention back to your friend, fake smile on your face.
“Tell me what?” you asked, feigning ignorance.
“About… that.” Renjun said, hand pointing in the general direction of Jaemin and the girl.
“Well I don’t understand what you’re talking about” you said, trying to brush him off.
“Look, I know how you and Jaemin are. The whole town knows. Maybe… Maybe this is a step in the right direction” he told you
“How ‘me and Jaemin’ are? There’s no me and Jaemin, Jun! He’s a free man and I’m a free woman, no more no less” you said.
You then noticed that Jaemin was stealing glances at you. You set your shoulders back, deciding not to give him the satisfaction. If he had something to say, he could come over and say it. You rested your eyes on Renjun’s familiar face, desperately trying to ignore the aching of your heart.
You should’ve been more careful what you wished for.
“Don’t panic, but they’re coming over here” Renjun told you, making you scoff.
“Hey Renjun! And Y/N, you made it back for another season, huh? Welcome.” Jaemin said.
Renjun only mumbled a hello as you thanked Jaemin. He was staring at you and you looked right back at him, fighting the urge to raise your eyebrows.
“I don’t think we’ve met, I’m Y/N” you said, offering a hand to the girl and turning your attention to her.
“Oh, I’ve heard so much about you! I’m Ryujin” she introduced herself.
“Ryunjin and I have been together for almost two months. I invited her to spend the summer over here with me” Jaemin told you, studying your face closely for your reaction.
“That’s so lovely! I hope we have time to get to know each other better” you told her, your stomach turning in an unfamiliar way.
Without many words after that, you excused yourself to go finish unpacking your things. Renjun offered to walk you home and you accepted his offer, your eyes lingering on Jaemin. He shot you a look that could be interpreted in a million different ways, but you were already leaving.
It didn’t take long for you and Renjun to get away from the pier, and it didn’t take long for you to break down after that. You clutched onto Renjun for dear life, his arms around you, comforting you. You caught fistfulls of his shirt in your hands as silent tears welled from your eyes, Renjun whispering little nothings in your ear.
It took a few minutes for you to compose yourself, but Renjun was patient, helping you up and walking with you the rest of the way to your house. He offered to stay with you, but you had to decline. You needed to be alone right now. He wiped away your tears with his fingers, placing a small kiss on top of your head before walking away, waving a hand at you, sad smile on his lips.
In the safety of your house, you lied back in your bed, exhaling deeply. You could feel your heart aching inside your chest, a certain brown haired boy having run off with a piece of it. You never knew summers could taste so bitter. So that was it, huh? The end to your story…
