you can kinda tell when a writer has spent a lot of time around kids bc they avoid most of the pitfalls that come with writing children. namely, not giving them a too cutesy or twee voice but making them sound more like extremely weird little adults. kids playing pretend will almost never cutely slot into some romantic scenario for the adults' benefit bc the adults are usually too busy cleaning up or wondering what the fuck is wrong with their child. kids also have surprisingly stringent hangups ranging from very petty grievances to downright chauvinist gender roles, more often than not the result of a tragic education but sometimes far surpassing what they were taught in intensity. what im saying is there's nothing inherently wrong with treating fictional kids as stock characters but it's always quite nice to see when they aren't
It's extremely common for very young children to suddenly say something extremely cogent and articulate, that's jarringly inconsistent with their normal speech. This is usually something that they heard an adult say recently. A kid will spend ten minutes telling you a story about how they fought a wolf yesterday using simple sentences of fifty cent words, then nibble a snack, wrinkle their nose and say something like "I feel like Mum was overenthusiastic with the salt today, and not for the first time either" before going back to their clumsy story. (They do understand what they're saying when they do this. Kids' communication is usually held back by their vocabulary and pronunciation, not their understanding.)
Young kids are also a lot more socially aware than people give them credit for. Young children are perfectly aware that adults don't take them seriously. They know when their parents don't actually like them. They listen and remember when adults talk about them while they're in the room. Kids will develop basic abilities to charm etc. from babyhood and will begin experimenting with social norms and concepts of deception, appropriate information, and acceptable language and attitudes in toddlerhood. By the time a kid is five or six, they have solid social strategies for relating to adults and separate ones fr relating to their peers, that they'll continue to refine for the rest of their lives. They will also say completely off the wall shit because they don't have the context to know what is and isn't considered super fucked up yet.
By the time a kid is eight or nine, their main difference from adults is in experience, interests, and ability for long-term focus. An eight year old can think as intelligently and coherently as a thirty year old, they just have less experience and information to draw from, and are likely interested in very different things. They're also likely still slightly hamstrung by vocabulary and literacy, though much less so than a younger kid.
Teens will behave like adults who have little power (a teen is often at the mercy of their parents and the state and rarely taken seriously, which is extremely frustrating) and who are high stress and mid-crisis, because they're going through a transitory period where their bodies and moods are changing and are having to constantly learn and adjust; a fourteen year old in a stable situation will act pretty much like a thirty year old with an oppressive boss who's just left a tumultuous relationship.
#oh is *that* why i feel 14 again after my fiance broke things off with me and i had to move halfway across the continent back in with my ma?
Yeah that's just what humans feel and act like when they're unmoored and powerless and unpredictably changing. Teenagers are pretty much constantly unmoored and powerless and unpredictably changing, and react reasonably to those circumstances.
Good Omens Finale trailer!!!!!!!!!!
Eeeeeek!
i know you're past this phase of your career, but. God. Do you know what strategies you used when you (probably) had to be working for someone else so you had energy to do what you actually wanted to do?
basically all advice about this ive found is aimed at office workers, but i work a blue collar job. i'm Physically tired, not mentally tired. Right now, working less hours isn't an option, and i feel like i'm going insane because all my time off is spent working2 (chores) or doing required physical maintenance (eating, mostly sleeping)
ONE
Take vacations/time off and strategize them into your next steps. This can be either progression in your passion (building a project) or reboot (relaxation to rebuild your body/mind/energy reserves). Both equally valid.
TWO
At no point should you feel negative about taking this time off.
There is no room for guilt about "leaving your co-workers hanging" etc. Your time off is part of your -- I'm going to use a super corporate bullshit word, but it's the most commonly term used -- "employee value proposition."
EVP = everything you get. Cash, retirement plan, healthcare, time off, etc. It's everything.
It's a job.
If you're not the boss, don't do boss things.
THREE
Prioritize health as possible.
Look at me. Look into my eyes.
There is absolutely no room in this statement for negative energy.
You do what you have to do. You do what you can do. The entire goal: "Can tomorrow be slightly better than today?"
Pay attention to your habits, sleep schedule, diet, exercise, exercise at work (this still counts), water consumption, alcohol/drugs consumption. Adjust accordingly.
Look into my eyes once more.
Make decisions based on your resources and goals.
"I can't--?"
You can do whatever you want.
The premise is living your best life.
"But I physically can't--"
Do whatever you can.
The premise is living your best life.
This segment has a lot of exposition because it is difficult and resource intensive. Food is expensive, gyms are expensive, cooking takes time, etc. I am not unaware.
FOUR
Assess everything. Constantly.
You mention sleep. How quality is your sleep? If you are sleeping several hours and do not feel like you're getting several hours of rest -- what can be changed?
My hours are weird as hell. A cheap cloth sleep mask that keeps light out helped a lot.
Again. Zero negativity. Are you on your phone just before sleep? Are you doomscrolling in bed? Assess and re-evaluate. "This does not lead me to my next step." Something else.
How good is your bed? If bad, can you prioritize a better bed? If not, can you prioritize a better pillow? Start there. Start with clean sheets: can you get a few sets so you can rotate out and do laundry less frequently but in bigger batches?
Look into sleep hygine.
Look into something comfortable in bed that is just for you. Stuffed animal, again a good pillow, soft music playing in the background.
Look into how you wake up. Jarring alarm? Hours set on phone to gradually wake you up?
Study where you are. Look to blog articles written by experts on how to get where you want to go. Don't run out and buy a bunch of crap -- study, assess, experiment, revaluate, repeat.
FIVE
Good shoes.
Discworld boots theory.
Can you scale up your footware?
Same question, tools: Can you scale up your tools?
SIX: THE BULLSHIT NATURE OF PATIENCE IS UNFORTUNATELY NECSSARY
Everything takes time. Everything takes experiments. You are going to pursue things and then realize they didn't work and then "ah beans if I hadn't tried that I'd be further ahead."
Unfortunately you're not a god so experimentations are necessary and have costs.
Study your life.
Pick 1 thing and work on improving it 1% over the course of 1 month.
Everything you do is at service to making this goal.
Some 1%-s will come faster.
Some will take longer.
The only deadline is death.
SEVEN: BONUS
Stretching routines. Ten billion free videos online on how to stretch every part of you that exists.
Increases your flexibility, makes moving easier, reduces wear-and-tear on your body and physical effort, which decreases needed recovery time.
FINAL
"I can't--" is not a excuse. It is an internal call for modification.
The paths to Better are infinite. So saying, the overwhelming majority are almost always locked for almost everyhone.
If you can't adjust sleep hygine, work on stretching. If you physically can't, work on diet. If you physically can't, work on footware... etc.
Good luck.
If you're not in an office worker job, ignore the advice aimed at office workers.
Physical labor has a lot of parallels with athletes. Look into the opening training stages of how junior-to-career athletes begin increasing strength and endurance, see what fits.
AND AS ALWAYS
Be honest with yourself about your boss and your job.
If it is not working out, keep an eye for something else.
Tricky. Risky. Likely the most difficult thing on this list.
Keep in mind.
Start small. Build up. Good luck.
My entry for Clip Studio Paint 46th international illustration contest!
Grandma never meet such big kitty before, and is very content of such a meeting.
Are you able to find all the cats? Try to count them before you swipe for close ups and let me know in the comment how much you was able to find!
A little story: This is a milestone when comes to my art. If you're familiar with my artistic output you very much know that all of my works - I don't even count isolated exceptations over the course of more than decade - are depiction of individual animals, occassionally pairs or groups, with or without decorative elements.
No scenes - interior or exterior - no environments at all. No history behind the artwork other than history that pet owners has in their hearts related to their relationship with the beloved pet.
As long as it's nothing wrong with that and I really enjoy drawing pets as well as I'm honored when a owner came to me to make a memorable artwork of their deceased pet, I really wanted to do something more for a very long time. I wanted to tell a story, and I wanted to make a personal art. Because believe it or not, I'm not making personal art for a couple of years already and it's just insane.
So here's one.
The ghosty cat is drawn in memory of my beloved Mr. Cat, who passed away back in 2022.

We donāt talk enough about how fanfiction writers love to give character large amounts of non-specific paperwork they hate doing
say more pls
Yeah sure why not.
So most stories take place when Events are Happening, and this means that no matter what kind of job the characters have, theyāre probably not too focused on them. Fanfics, on the other hand, often show the down time. Which means that the writer has to figure out what the hell these characters do in their jobs. Unless the characters have a job the author understands or knows well, the author is often at a loss for what to have the character doing.
So they sit them at a desk and give them paperwork. What is the paperwork for? Rarely specified. It is Paper Work for the characters Important Adult Job they have and they need to read or sign it or something. And thereās always a line about how Character Hates Paperwork. Doesnāt matter if Character is a Mafia Boss or a General or a Diplomat, here they are in an office trying to get out of Doing Paperwork.
Thereās also a sense of, like, humor and mundanity that comes with it. Like the examples above, it always particularly stands out to me when a dangerous individual is griping about some paper they need to sign or something. The less you can picture Character doing paperwork, all the better to force it upon them. If Character is saddled with Paperwork, theyāre usually now concerned about the physical damages their motley crew causes, because damage = More Paperwork.
Anyway I just think itās fun or funny, Sephiroth doing paper work and Sawada Tsunayoshi doing paper work and this just in, Tony Stark is doing paperwork. Sorry, Phoenix Wright canāt play right now. Yeah, itās paperwork.
A very non-exhaustive list of actual paperwork they could be completing/reviewing/approving, in no particular order:
Timesheets
Expense reports
Requisition requests
Budget justifications
Payroll
Performance evaluations
Incident reports
After action reviews / post-mortem analyses
Incident Action Plans
Contracts
Contract proposals / grant applications
Reports / briefings
Your Royalty or Nobles in your feudal society should be doing this constantly unless you want to show how they're losing the kingdom and about to be usurped or overthrown.
petitions, speech-writing, complaints, requests, assignations, disputes, judiciary forms, declarations that need signing off on, matters requiring the Royal seal, matters requiring a royal endorsement, pardons, judgments, invitations, rebuttals, census data, crop yields projected or actual, livestock records, water rights, Sumptuary laws, taxes taxes taxes...
solid point there!
even when the royalty look like they're just fucking off to have fun, they're doing Socially Mandated Fuck-Off and Have Fun Time
Tournaments? Gotta show you're manly and virile through sport, or the nobles will supplant you. Feasts? Gotta show you're wealthy through conspicuous consumption, or the nobles will supplant you. Patronizing the arts? Gotta show you're cultured and erudite, or the nobles will laugh at you behind your back and probably supplant you.
Lawyer here. Hereās some more mundane/modern ones for you:
Invoices.
Intake sheets (information about new clients. The one for my firm is 13 pages and requires an hour long meeting. Then you have to do something with the info gathered)
Data entry for invoices and intake sheets.
Billing. (More involved than timesheets because youāre justifying to clients why youāre getting paid so much).
Form letters.
Taxes. Including 1099s for any contracted work.
Bank statements/accounting spreadsheets. Gotta track how expenses are trending.
Insurance documents.
General messages. Lots of office still use a paper system for missed calls and āimportantā stuff because it just works better than emails and chats for some people.
Memos. Big enough office to have at least one attorney on payroll? Youāre getting memos about every legal question and concern and contract. Itās how weāre trained to communicate in formal settings.
And if you want to get into modern military, the forms are numbered, and people will refer to them by either their actual name, or the number. (Have you filled out the 4187 for this? Yes, I filled out the personnel action form.)
The military has so many forms.
If you want to add a rage level, thereās the Regular Paperwork and then the special hell of Fuckup Paperwork.
Cause thereās the invoice, and the follow up invoice and the we are about to have a problem follow-up invoice.
Thereās the incident report and then the I swear I yelled at that worker about this donāt be mad at me if they do it again second warning documentation
The requisition form and the it has been six months now get me the fucking thing or youāre gonna hear from Cindy escalations form.
Paperwork has layers and protocols and backups.
For law firms, there's also the 'I am asking nicely for you to send me this legally mandated document' and then the follow-up 'My please was a social nicety, I am no longer asking, I am telling you to send me this document or explain to a court why you refuse to do so' which, depending on the type of law, can fill a significant amount of the day
Other legal paperwork may include!
-Case Review! This applies in some areas of law but it's basically checking through the case, seeing the status with your own stuff and the court's stuff, often writing a brief summary of your review, and making an action plan for next steps. Depending on the type of law and where the case is in progress this can take anywhere from 5 minutes ("ok nothing new in the court file, nothing's changed on our end, we're still waiting on the court") to, uh, several hours or days ("we're preparing for hearing and I need a full summary of every single thing including an index.")
-Indexing! This is where you take the evidence in a case and make a markup reference document with every citation you think you might need (e.g. a spreadsheet with like... Evidence ID 5F, page 32, [date] date of service, x-ray report, and then a description of what the x-ray report says). In large firms this can often be gruntwork and may be done by attorneys or paralegals. Most attorneys hate it, some of us love it, and some of us love it in moderation. For instance, I love indexing in moderation, and another unit will sometimes give me overflow work where it's like "ok these are 9,000 pages of medical records and we need to know which providers signed things on which dates" (for investigating billing fraud for, like, hey buddy you were at a conference that day how'd you see a patient???). Not all cases get indexed. As an example, if it's like a 5-page major fuck up record? No indexing needed. 9,000 pages? Indexing very much needed.
In terms of fiction that shows this well, I can suggest both Katherine Addison's The Goblin Emperor (wherein paperwork is a NOT INSUBSTANTIAL ongoing activity) and Dorothy Sayers's Murder Must Advertise (wherein the peculiarities of professional ad writing and the various difficulties of bringing anything to press at all could reasonably be construed as the point upon which the entire mystery turns).
Every single job on the planet has some form of routine paperwork and some form of urgent paperwork and some form of FUBAR paperwork
Also I cant think of a single employee of any company who doesn't have a non-zero amount of paperwork even if its just enrolling in the health insurance or pension paperwork.
Accident forms
Timesheets
Equipment inspection
Customer intake
Invoice
Cash drawer count
No one has mentioned scheduling. Particularly henceman scheduling.
Do you think an evil lair runs itself?
Benny the Beater needs off next week for his sister's wedding (or an upcoming funeral. Groom's choice.) Slim is in the slammer again for reasons unrelated to official business. Does that count as paid leave? Everyone expects Memorial Day off or overtime. Leo wants 2 weeks off to go back to the old country. No one knows exactly which country this is but he's earned the time.
Look, its going to be at least a month before you can pull together a full team for the big heist.

What will survive of him is love
If he should die before he wake.
I had a dream, which was not all a dream. See in her cell sad Eloisa spread, Lookād up in perfect silence at the stars. I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead.

Gordon Tootoosis,Ā Aboriginal Canadian actor, activist, and band chief of Cree and Iyarhe Nakoda descent, as Cecil Delaronde in Canadian TV series Blackstone.
[image description: two stills of Gordon Tootoosis, captioned, āLeadership is about submission to duty, not elevation to power.ā end description.]
This is one of the most profound statements on leadership Iāve encountered in a long time, and it really landed a hit on me. Itās difficult to discuss without getting a little weird about it, but for a long time Iāve been of the mind that the privilege of having a large readership implies the duty of giving back in specific ways ā I just never thought of it in terms of leadership as submission to duty.Ā

The best advice really is to just write. Write badly - purple prose, stilted conversations, rambling descriptions. Don't delete it, pass go, take your $200, save all your garbage in a big folder. Look at how much you've made - it doesn't matter if it isn't perfect, isn't polished, it was practice. Every time you write you learn a little more, and find another piece of your voice.
everyone on replies is terrified of this fact but i just think it's so sweet and heartwarming. she's holding our hand and leading us somewhere secret and we're both giggling like kids. i love her

I liked this post, scrolled for like another minute before I went āSHIT FUCK SHITā and scrolled back to reblog it
I always reblog this one when I see it on my dash. When someone posts their own art, writing, or music here they are really hoping you will share it.
Years ago I saw a Lord of the Rings display at Barnes and Noble that included a Hallmark-style greeting card with Frodo on the front and inside text that read: āWe set out to save the Shire, Sam. And it has been saved. But not for me.ā
And I have been thinking about that card ever since, desperately wishing I had bought it, and wondering what the fuck kind of occasion would warrant a card featuring that sentiment.
weirdly enough, i have actually been the recipient of that exact card. it was a birthday card from someone who knew i loved lotr but didnāt really know much about the actual movie, but i feel like she shouldāve been clued into theĀ āwtfā vibe from the incredibly agonized face frodo is making on the front of the card.Ā
If you still have that card⦠I would do anything to see a photo of it. You can cover up the personalized message, but I really, really, really want to see proof that this card existed and was not the product of my overactive imagination.
@glumshoe I FOUND IT!!
Iād forgotten just how close to death Frodo looks on the front, not to mention Samās agonized face and the very odd stylistic choice of including the Ring instruction and the Eye of Sauron in the background. who the hell is the target audience for this?
Fuck!!!! Itās so much better than I remembered!
What sentiment is this supposed to CONVEY
It feels like the pop culture equivalent of āI am just going outside and may be some timeā so I guess the sender would be trying to tell the recipient this will be the last communication they send.

...what is the "sex is just rock climbing" category
It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:
It is a physical activity done with one or more partners
You should only go rock climbing with people you trust to not let you fall
You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making
Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35 and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are
While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma
There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.
For some people it is a deep and moving personal experience.
historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexor injury" before participating when perhaps I should have š
