Why the casting of Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon doesn't bother me
...and why it shouldn't bother anyone else!
Now, in the beginning, I was mad about black Westerosi nobles because I didn't know too much about Game of Thrones lore. I knew that, ethnically, Westerosi people are nearly always white (with the exception of the Dornish) and were never Black. You can understand why such a lapse in canon would bother me. But after rewatching House of the Dragon, I was reminded that House Velaryon is not from Westeros, but hails from Old Valyriaβwhich was in Essos. Per Game of Thrones canon, Black people DO ethnically come from Essos, so realistically a Valyrian noble house could easily have been Black. Everyone who says Corlys Velaryon shouldn't have been played by a Black man in House of the Dragon is just a racist piece of shit, confirmed.
