what if?

Hello happy halloween! this is my first time writing in present tense and it was really really hard. hope you like it

He fights as he falls asleep. Limbs tangled and heads tilted toward each other, I can feel every twitch and spasm in his slumbering form. A punch—an aborted thing in the forearm and shoulder. Legs jumping ever so slightly—is he light on his toes in his dream? I stretch my fingers over his belly and feel him tense. His opponent must have landed a body shot. His pulse steadily thumps into my ribs, tiny strikes where our bodies press together. Sometimes he really does punch me, his brain fully connecting to his body, despite the half-sleep stupor that usually blankets his moves. He knees my belly, kicks my shins. Last night he wrapped one arm around my neck and the other around my face—a soft choke hold that was more like a smothering hug. It was only three seconds, but I clawed my way out of his grasp in a momentary panic. When he elbowed me in the face, he woke up. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, please don’t leave!” I stay, but then I leave. I’m not used to falling asleep fighting.
