A big theme of Coco’s character is hope. Throughout the manga, Coco faces lots of adversity and challenges. Despite this, she always seems to remain hopeful. She also brings hope to others. With the brimmed caps seeing her as a light of hope, Qifrey finding hope in her to achieve his goals, and the girls at the atelier growing stronger from learning how to remain hopeful thanks to their new classmate.

Coco’s optimism is what holds her together and drives the story forward. If it weren’t for her faith that she can bring her mother back, she wouldn’t have become an apprentice. Without her belief in her skills, she would have never conquered the Dadah Range. Hope for a solution helped her use teamwork with her fellow apprentices in Kahn. These examples from the first volume alone show that her hope is a powerful force. This messaging continues to prove itself throughout the series.

As well as holding herself together, she also elicits hope in those around her. After the incident back at Coco’s home, Qifrey has one line of dialogue that really stands out. He says, “There may yet be hope.” To first-time readers, this may just seem as if he is reassuring Coco that there is a chance for her mother; however, I believe there’s more to it. When Qifrey first hears about the spellbook given to Coco, it indicates that Coco may be helpful in his endeavor to make right of what happened to him as a child. It gives him a feeling of hope. This is why I think that Qifrey may have also been speaking to himself, not just Coco.

While we don’t yet have much information on the brimmed caps, we do know why they seek out Coco. She gives them hope. Numerous times, Iguin refers to Coco as the “child of hope.” The brimmed caps want to build a better world, and they want to use Coco to do so. They pull strings in the dark, setting up Coco for something that is bound to make a change. Because Coco was an outsider, she was not taught early on to be compliant and doubtless in the system. This leads Coco to more easily question the system, compared to the other apprentices. Sparking uncertainty within the pointed caps brings hope to the brimmed caps.
