SNRH 101: Details for Tomorrow
Tomorrow is the big night! We are so excited for the 5th year of Senior Night at Reynolda House. Â Here are some details about what you need to know for tomorrow night!Â
How Tomorrow Will Work
You carpool with friends or walk as a group from campus. Limited parking is available on the grounds. Â
Once you arrive, you will check in at the tables near the orientation gallery (down the hall from the foyer). You must use your WFU ID! If you are 21+, you will receive a wristband and 1 drink ticket.
After you check in you and a group of your classmates will be taken by a volunteer gallery guide down the stairs to the gallery.Â
In the gallery you'll get to view the works of art and participate in an activity to express your thoughts on the different works
Then you'll move into the gallery lobby and auditorium where you'll be able to eat some food and get something to drink.Â
Take time to head over to the studio space directly off the gallery lobby to create your own still life work of art - instagram it for a chance to win tickets to the Candlelight Tours of the Reynolda House.Â
Take pictures of yourself and your friends, not of the art!
Stay as long as youâd like, and leave when your ready! Keep in mind, it ends at 7!
Reynolda House Policies
Cell phones should be off or on vibrate.
Outside food and drinks are not allowed.
Food and drinks are not allowed in the Historic House or Gallery.
Smoking is prohibited.
Please do not touch the art of historic furnishings. Hands contain natural oils that, over time, can damage objects in the collection.
Photography and videography is prohibited; photography is allowed on the grounds.
SNRH 101: What to Wear
So what on earth do you wear to Senior Night at the Reynolda House? What is cocktail casual? We called it cocktail casual to encourage you to bring the ritz but not feel obligated to buy something new. Generally, just wear more than youâd wear to class, and less than youâd wear for a black tie. In general, what most would wear to a sorority or fraternity chapter meeting would be appropriate. This is not a formal event so whatever you choose should be fun and make you feel confident! Here are some tips for your outfit tomorrow night.
For all: What NOT to Wear
Flip Flops
A costume
Your Screaminâ Demons shirt
Things with vulgar displays
Athletic clothing
For Women
Donât be afraid to glam it up a little. How often do you get a chance to dress up?
Cocktail dresses, less formal dresses, dark denim + a nice blouse, dressy tunic tops + leggings + boots are all possibilities
SHOES: The heels may be cute, but remember you will be at a museum mostly standing for the time you are there, so wear something comfortable
For Men
This may be an opportunity for you to try something trendy or experiment with a new look. Try wearing a vest, or a bowtie, or a scarf.
Donât feel obligated to wear a suit, tie or a sports coat/jacket!
Polo shirts or button ups with khakis or slacks will work great. You can also wear dark denim.Â
SHOES: Just look sharp!Â
SNRH 101 -- The Exhibit
This is the first post in a series of posts to inform students about our Senior Night at Reynolda House event, called Senior Night at the Reynolda House 101 (SNRH 101) Today we will focus on the exhibit, "Things Wondrous & Humble: American Still Life".Â
This exhibit is drawn primarily from the Reynolda House collection and is accompanied by key loans from other museums and private collections.Â
It reflects both traditional and modern approaches to still life.Â
Still life is about discovering the secrets within the artwork itself.
Symbolism plays a significant role in still life
You'll be surprised by all this exhibit has to offer and what you'll find to talk about with your class. Â
As you are about to embark on a new adventure outside of our beautiful campus you may find yourself at an art gallery function. Â This experience with your class will not only be fun but can give you some idea of what the expectations are for behavior in a gallery and allow you to at least be able to express knowledge regarding still life works of art in the future!Â
.
Senior Night at Reynolda House is just around the corner.Â
Come and enjoy an evening with your class at this amazing gem located just next to campus. Â You'll have a guided tour through the current exhibit "Things Wondrous & Humble: American Still Life" - which trust us isn't just full of fruit on tables!
Then you'll be able to enjoy some yummy hors d'oeuvres, build your own inspirational still life piece, and more! Â Plus we're giving away some tickets to the Candlelight Tours at the Reynolda House.
Make sure to bring your WFU ID to be granted entrance. Â

Shocked, Shocked: The Senate Exploits Unpaid Interns
If you walk into any of the 100 Senate offices spread across Capitol Hill, there is one consistent element. Marco Rubioâs furniture wonât be the same as Elizabeth Warrenâs and Mark Udallâs landscape photographs wonât match Lindsey Grahamâs wall hangings. The ubiquitous fixture of every Senate (and House) office is livelier: the young, sometimes bright-eyed, cohorts of interns that flood the Capitol in the summer.
Across the spectrum of industries, internships have been commonplace for decades, but the unpaid variety has come under close scrutiny only recently, following a number of high-profile incidents challenging the legitimacy of the practice â long bemoaned by many interns themselves. In June, a federal judge ruled for the first time that Fox Searchlight broke employment laws by not paying interns. Two days later, former interns at CondĂŠ Nast, who had been paid at a rate less than $1 an hour, filed suit against the magazine group. CondĂŠ Nast has recently revealed it has stopped paying interns altogether. Seeking a more conciliatory approach, interns at The Nation wrote a letter to their editors at the end of July instead of taking legal action, and were later rewarded by a promise of minimum wage. As the case of the unpaid intern garnered national attention, it wouldnât be long before the national legislature would get its turn. That happened when Jessica Padron, whoâs been offered an internship in the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, took to Indiegogo to crowdfund her otherwise-unpaid internship.
