hi all! while i'm working on my next big project, i realized that i forgot to finish my entry for weyward grove's discussion questions for may! i'm so grateful for @hillbillybubbeleh for doing this for the community, i think it is/will be great for the space :)
WHAT IS MAGIC?
magic, to me, is a formless thing, impossible to predict where it'll be, but easy to see where it's been. i see magic as the thick, heavy clouds that roll through my hometown in the early mornings, the way the sun caresses my face on my birthdays, and watching vultures circle over a rotting coyote corpse. it's the most beautiful thing i've ever experienced, and the ugliest. magic took my mother. magic is my mother.
i know that's very vague, but the way i feel magic is vague. i couldn't tell you enough of my life experiences to convince you magic is real, but the sum of those things i've been through, big and small, add up to that knowledge.
DO WE CREATE MAGIC OURSELVES?
no, i think magic has always existed, but humans (and other animals, honestly) have learned how to channel it. i don't think that magic exists for us or because of us.
WHERE DOES MAGIC COME FROM?
i have no clue, and i don't think it's my business to know. i know that it has to come from somewhere, but there are so many different cosmologies that i can't even begin to describe it myself. i'm just one guy, and i've only been alive for so long.
DOES MAGIC HAVE A PURPOSE?
no, i think it would be here whether or not it had a purpose. i think magic pre-dates any sort of consciousness that might have given it a purpose, but i could definitely be wrong, again i've only been here so long.
IF MAGIC ISN'T "MAGIC," WHAT ELSE MIGHT IT BE?
i guess you could also call it "energy"? like life energy, solar energy, etc. etc. it's the undercurrent of power that exists in everything, even completely "inanimate" objects.
WHAT ROLE DOES MAGIC PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?
it is everything to me. in a life so full of confusion and misfortune, i turn to magic to help me understand and accept the things i cannot control. sure, i do my best to manipulate it in my favor through spell work, but i also just look to it for comfort and for guidance all the time.

It's the first month of Weyward Grove, and we already started with a toughie.
Throughout my life, I've given the concept of magic a lot of thought. I was raised believing magic existed - but unsurprisingly, my perception and understanding of it has changed over the years. There's been times where I've been asked to explain what magic is and how I know it's "real," but the truth is, I don't know. The way I interact with magic is always changing.
Sometimes, my belief is steadfast and unwavering - I see the magic in everything, everywhere, all the time; paradoxically though, there are times when I'm unaffected, unmoved and indifferent to magic, too. My understanding ebbs and flows.
— WHAT IS MAGIC?
Magic is everything.
It's all around us - there, even when we don't recognize or understand it.
There's really no easy way to explain magic. It's in nature - in the changes of the seasons, in the migration of birds, in the gentle summer breezes. It's in natural phenomena - the stuff that can be seen and explained by science and theories.
At the same time, magic is unknowable.
It's in coincidences that could be explained by chance and yet feel meaningful to you. It's in the feeling you get when someone triggers your wards, or when a spirit wanders into your sanctuary.
Magic is a paradox.
It's there when you want it to be. Gone, if you don't. There's magic in everything - the observable, the unknowable, and the proven.
Everything in life can be explained. You can explain it with logic, with science and theories, by chance and coincidence, and with magic. I choose to believe that nothing just /happens/ in life.
Everything, everywhere, all the time is connected to something else. Even if you don't see it or choose not to believe it, the threads of magic, of coincidence and science and chance, are embedded into everything.
— DO WE CREATE MAGIC OURSELVES?
This question is a tough one. Magic, in my opinion, is a kind of energy. It cannot be created nor destroyed - just transformed and converted.
The full question is, "do we create magic ourselves? Or are there pre-existing magical currents we're utilizing?" and I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle.
If there's magic in everything, which I believe there is, then that means there's inherently magic in us, too. But that magic is inherent - granted to us by virtue of being part of the world around us. It dwells within us, settled somewhere within the fabric of our very being; we don't create that. We draw from a finite, but constantly replenishing pool of energy.
That's why we get tired after a long ritual. That energy - the magic we use, comes from somewhere. If we could generate our own magic, then we'd all be casting spells 24/7 without ever getting tired.
In the same way we need regular sleep and nourishment, we need to regularly replenish our magic(al) energy.
That said, not everyone draws from their inherent pool of magic. Just like with anything in life, everyone's pool is different.
Some people have an easier time tapping into their own magic, while other's have bigger pools to take from. Some people's pool replenishes naturally with time, while other's have to take energy from elsewhere to take care of themselves.
Some people prefer to borrow magic altogether and turn to the ethereal and divine for help rather than using their own supply.
— WHERE DOES MAGIC COME FROM?
Like I said, magic is inherent. I'm sure you could come up with some theory about where it originates from - but like the blood that pumps through our body, magic is just there.
If you're part of nature, magic is part of you. (in other words, I don't know)
— DOES MAGIC HAVE A PURPOSE?
No.
When we harness magic, we can give it a purpose but magic can be used for anything. Think of electricity - before we found a way to convert it to power our lights, it technically didn't have a purpose.
That doesn't mean it wasn't there, or anything. It just didn't have anything to do or a place to go. Magic doesn't inherently have a purpose. Anyone can harness it and use it for whatever motivates them. Some people use it for healing and protection, while others get more destructive and baneful with it.
There's no right or wrong way to use magic. It doesn't follow a strict moral code or have a rulebook for the do's and don't.
— IF MAGIC ISN'T "MAGIC," WHAT IS IT?
Then it would be synchronicity. I know that Carl Jung gets mentioned way more than he should, but his concept of synchronicity - the concept that events can appear meaningfully related, yet lack actual connection, feels relevant here.
In a world where magic isn't magic, then those instances that felt "magical" would be examples of synchronicity.
— ARE YOU A MAKER OF MAGIC?
On impulse, I wanted to say that I am a maker of magic - but when I think about it for a second longer, I don't think that's true.
The full question, "are you a maker of magic? Or has magic made you?" truly made me wonder. Throughout my life, I've been guided by magic. In almost every major life decision, magic has been there for me. I learned from my grandma and mom, and every since then, magic has just been part of my way of life. There's something a bit poetic about saying that I'm made by magic, but I think that's true.
It's so deeply engraved into my soul and body. I've casted spells for so many things, and when they've failed, I've taken that as a sign to move on. It's that kind of process that's led me to where I am right now, literally. If my spells had worked as intended, then I'd be elsewhere - but I'm here.
And with that in mind, I say that my magic has definitely made me.
— WHAT ROLE DOES MAGIC PLAY IN MY LIFE?
As I've gotten older, magic has less of a role in my life - but I yearn for it.
I so desperately want to get back into doing magic and casting spells. Magic used to play such a big part in my life. Everything I owed was enchanted, protected and anointed - and while there's still lots of that energy around, the way I engage with magic as a whole has changed.
When I say that I was raised with magic, know that I mean I was raised with it. It's literally weaved into my daily life, that I don't think I could separate myself from my practice even if I tried.
From the color I paint my nails, to the jewelry I wear, and the oils I put in my hair - every aspect of my life has been touched by magic in one way or another. During my job search, I did so many different spells in the hopes of landing a job.
Whenever I need to make a big decision, I immediately pull out the tarot cards for guidance from the Universe. The rearview mirror of my car has like, three different amulets dangling from it as protection on the road. While I am not so intentional with it anymore, magic is just a way of life for me. I'm always engaging with it, even when it might not seem like it - magic surrounds me, and I'll forever be grateful for that.
in this post i'm answering the weyward grove prompts for may 2026! these are answered from the perspective of my personal practice.
What is magic?
magic is the manipulation of the threads of fate. it is a powerful and purposeful change unto the spiritual paths and identities of individual beings. when we perform magic we are diverting pathways in the original river of wyrd. this is not to say that i view this as a diversion of the original timeline, or as something abnormal that should not be done unto existing fate. i see witchcraft as an ancient tradition of manipulating the threads of fate to improve our lives or that of our entire communities, that is a positive and necessary practice unto the fabric of fate. we bring independence, diversity, and revolutions when altering the patterns of fate.
Do we create magic ourselves? Or are there pre-existing magical currents we're utilizing?
i believe that we utilize existing magical currents to create, but we do generate our own magical currents as a living beings. we have a thread of our fate weaved within the entire fabric, and we have a source of energy (the same as any plant, animal, or other spirit who we draw energy from). in practice though, we typically utilize partnerships with other spirits for powerful energy manipulations of fate.
Where does magic come from? What is its origin?
the cauldron of wyrd are the generators of power, which all living things also possess their own versions of (AKA energy centers). i envision this cauldron producing the thread that the fabric of wyrd is weaved from. in my belief, all spirits have a core digestive energy center (human analogue is the stomach), animal spirits have a heart energy center, and only human spirits have a head energy center.
Does magic have a purpose?
the purpose of magic is to induce evolution, breaking out of repressive systems, and altering seemingly inevitable fates. in both "left hand" and "right hand" workings, we work towards these major goals in our manipulation of the web of wyrd.
If magic isn't "magic," what else might it be?
i would call magic, wyrd-manipulation, web-reweaving, or perhaps fate-changing.
Are you a maker of magic? Or has magic made you?
this question reminded me of one of my favorite tarot decks, the magicmakers tarot by paulina fae. the magicmakers are described as a "a menagerie of enchanting beings", who "eagerly reveal their arcane prescriptions for personal alchemy and transformation, offering heartfelt wishes for your boundless happiness, well-being and abundance." i associate this deck heavily with the gloaming folk, and it has definitely influenced my beliefs regarding this specific question. i would say to answer the specific question: both, but primarily because i am a witch. i believe that magic surrounds us, and creates us, in the form of bending the fates, and as a witch i take part in the manipulation of magic. in my belief, non-witches also do this unintentionally through things like self-sabotage, weaponized incompetence, obsession, and other unhealthy actions such as these.
What role does magic play in your life, practice, beliefs, etc.?
i include my beliefs of wyrd throughout most of my workings, due to the road-opening/uncrossing purposes associated with most of my manifestation practices. as a witch i obviously interact with magic more than the average person!
I was going to do An Art for this month's @weywardgrove prompt, but I ended on a doodle instead (mostly because I am still learning digital art and I'm self-conscious about it). It wasn't a well-planned or well-thought-out doodle because, to be honest, I wasn't sure what prompt I wanted to answer so I just started drawing and reflecting on what I believed about magic.
For my own practice, I believe that magic can be many things and come from many places all at once. I believe that the witch is the source of their own magic. But I also believe that an element of that can come from or be supported by the relationships and connections the witch builds with the external spirits, land, etc. that make up their magical ecosystem. For me, witchcraft is built on connection--to spirits, to ancestors, to earth, to the spirit world, etc.--as much as it is on belief.

Hello! No, there's not a discord server for Weyward Grove, and I don't plan on there being one. Weyward Grove is a submission blog featuring monthly prompts for practitioners of magic, witchcraft, mysticism, etc.
The theme to explore for May 2026 is magic. It seemed a fitting theme to open our prompts with. As you may already know, Weyward Grove is a project created with the intention of fostering exploration and celebration of magical and mystical traditions, as well as encouraging introspection and growth in one's own magical path and magical perspectives and understandings. This month, we're doing so by exploring the concepts, ideas, and functions of magic, as well as exploring our own beliefs and definitions surrounding magic.
Here are some examples of questions through which one can explore their beliefs and definitions of magic within their own practice/craft, culture, religion, etc.:
-What is magic?
-Do we create magic ourselves? Or are there pre-existing magical currents we're utilizing?
-Where does magic come from? What is its origin?
And some further examples of more introspective, philosophical ponderings to explore and play with this month:
-Does magic have a purpose?
-If magic isn't "magic," what else might it be?
-Are you a maker of magic? Or has magic made you?
-What role does magic play in your life, practice, beliefs, etc.?
Feel free to explore these questions within your practice, play with them, answer them in any way you'd like. You can spend as long or as little with these questions as you want. Perhaps these questions birth further questions, which you are more than welcome to share and explore in your submitted posts, reblogs, or responses.
Need ideas of what to post? Weyward Grove encourages creativity, passion, and nerdiness of all sorts, so don't worry about getting "too crafty" with artistic mediums of expression, "too wordy" with written responses or journaling/logs detailing your process and answers, or "too into it" when sharing your opinions. Remember, answer in whatever way you're moved to — Q & As, essays, poems, digital art, photo diaries, mood boards, videos, audio, etc.

Welcome to Weyward Grove : a community for the discussion, exploration, and appreciation of the magical and mystical arts.
Launch date: May 01st 2026!
This blog was created with the intention of fostering a space where practitioners of magic and mysticism can explore their personal crafts and paths whilst also engaging with other practitioners on their own journeys. I adore the magical and mystical, and I want to have a space to celebrate our magic whilst also encouraging and fostering growth in our practices through introspection, craft building, exploration, and respectful discussion. Thus, Weyward Grove was born.
This blog is a community space without utilizing the Tumblr community feature (because, let's be honest, the community feature isn't always the best). Each month, a new theme/prompt will be posted to the Weyward Grove blog. Followers and community members are then encouraged to explore that theme in their personal practices throughout the month, in any way that they feel comfortable doing so, and then reflecting on the prompt/theme in a submitted post to Weyward Grove (or a series of submitted posts throughout the month to catalog the process, thoughts, journey, and/or outcome).
While this is a submission blog, there are a number of ways to take part and engage. Here's how:
Submit posts using the submission feature!
This is how Weyward Grove was intended to function. Submitted posts can contain media (text, audio, images, video), but cannot contain links. If you'd like to include a link in your submitted post, please DM @weywardgrove, explaining why there needs to be a link and sharing the link beforehand. Pending verification of the link, submission settings will be temporarily altered to permit link inclusion.
For those who don't want to use the submission feature (I understand the sideblog struggle), here are other ways of engaging:
Make your posts on your sideblog using these tags: #weyward grove, #weywardgrove, and/or #weyard grove community submission.
I will be frequently monitoring these tags and will reblog posts pertaining to the prompts/themes on @weywardgrove.
Send shorter posts to the ask box with your sideblog tagged!
Use the submission feature, but specify at the beginning of the submission your witchcraft sideblog with your tag.
How to engage with content:
Like posts! Reblog content that speaks to you! Comment in the replies!
If you'd prefer your content not be reblogged/commented upon, please specify as much at the beginning of your post.
Always engage respectfully. Any disrespectful behavior, bigotry, harassment, or breaking of the established guidelines of this blog and/or Tumblr's community guidelines will result in being blocked from the blog and, when called for, reported (see the soon-to-come pinned post for Weyward Grove's full guidelines).
Be mindful and respectful of closed practices. Practitioners of closed practices are welcome to take part in Weyward Grove. You can tag or mark your submissions/posts as pertaining to a closed practice so that others know how to respectfully observe and engage.
And don't forget to have fun!
