We Three TV

So after much pushing and prodding, Deb and Melissa finally decided to watch each other’s seminal teen dramas. You might be able to tell that the ladies are from slightly different generations—Deb grew up on Dawson’s Creek while Melissa was obsessed with Naley and her spirit animal Haley James on One Tree Hill—but we’ve found that both are our favorites for the usual teen reasons: love triangles, fantastic dialogue, and the most pretentious coming of age drama available on television.

Partway through Deb’s OTH watch, however, she discovered another brilliant connection between the two shows: their theme songs’ names are almost creepily similar. DC has “I Don’t Want to Wait” by Paula Cole while OTH features “I Don’t Want to Be” by Gavin DeGraw. While we talked, amazed by the almost word-for-word title comparison, something even greater hit us: despite the similarity in names, the songs are diametrically opposed. Not only that, but the theme songs illuminate the two very different focuses of each show: one on the future, the other on the past and present.

I am recently divorced after a rather tumultuous marriage. I wasn’t sure I would find anyone (after all, I’m right around the big 3-0 and damaged goods to boot), but then happened to fall for the most beautiful, kind-hearted man, who I will call “Alderman Broad Shoulders”.

I told my BFF, “Orange”, about my crush on Alderman Broad Shoulders and, much to my surprise, she informed me that she had had a long, torrid affair with him while she was engaged to her now ex-fiance. As if that weren’t enough, she was still in love with him!

As her BFF, I swore that I wouldn’t let my feelings amount to anything, but after spending a lot more time with Alderman Broad Shoulders, one thing led to another and we slept together. He knows that Orange was still in love with him recently and says that he doesn’t want her. He wants me.

In the interest of being a good best friend (or, at least, a better one), I told Orange about Alderman Broad Shoulders and me and apologized for letting it get this far without telling her. Her reaction? She wants nothing to do with me and wants to dissolve our shared business.

I don’t know what to do! I’ve fallen hard for Alderman Broad Shoulders and he makes me so happy, but Orange has been my best friend since we were little girls. I want to have both of them in my life. How do I fix this?
