Those were his words back then, and those were the words that were being screamed into his head now. Echoing throughout his skull, vibrating the bone and causing a tremble in his hands. There was rage building up inside of him, burning anger, a flame that seared his heart, or whatever heart he had. If one said that Moriarty didn’t haunt the mind of Sherlock Holmes, well they would either be lying or completely unaware to the fact. To break him, to destroy him, the reason why made too much sense but at the same none at all. He understood it to a point, and yet just as he seemed to get it, the reasoning and the facts slipped from his hands again… They were similar, there was no lie about that. A psychopath and a sociopath, very similar, one just a little further gone than the other. One more willing to fight for angels while the other runs with the demons. It is a twist of fate that neither could have predicted.

When Sherlock took that call to John, when he stood tall on the ledge of the building, he could’ve sworn that Moriarty lie dead behind him. That he was lost to the world. The fail safe lost to the stormy waves of death, beyond the veil, the demon returning to the depths for which he came from. He never believed in heaven or hell, he never believed in ghosts or the supernatural, however at the same time he gave it the merit that there was a possibility. He was finely placed upon the line between skeptics and believers. As he stepped off the building’s ledge, his breath stolen from him as he fell, he stepped a little more onto the side of believer. The sharp crack of bone, the pounding pain, blood oozing from the wound– he saw for a split second the world from outside his form.

If it weren’t for Molly Hooper, Sherlock would be gone, but he survived. He knew how to lessen his chances of death, knew where the ground was softer, knew how to take the fall, he knew all these things that played the odds in his favor so when he hit the ground he had just a little higher of a chance to awaken again. The pain was excruciating, the world was a dull blur, everything felt surreal when he finally came to, and when he stood hidden out of view when John visited his grave… his heart hurt. Everything ached in a way he never expected it too– but there was relief. Moriarty was dead, John was alive, everything was okay now. He wasn’t an angel, he walked with them, that much is true, but he wasn’t anything of the sort. So he supposed that was another good thing to come out of it, a beast that hides just out of sight, ready to bite down on the neck of it’s prey. It is very possible that one day the detective would snap and that metaphor would become a brittle reality.

Time passed, Sherlock returned from the dead, life continued on. Things were going well, things got difficult but just like any flower it seemed life was finally blooming. That was until the stark realization hit. He didn’t know what he expected when the crimes started up again. He didn’t know how he was suppose to feel when they became eerily the same. Terror? Hatred? Joy? There was a cacophony of emotions all of which he wished to throw away, to return to his original mindset, to go back to the way he was before any of this happened. If it was just him, and nobody else, Moriarty wouldn’t be a problem, if he just played his cards better. The suicide was a lie, the truth buried in fake blood and prop guns… The detective couldn’t say a thing, his words caught in his throat, stormy eyes staring wide and hateful. Only one word came from him, only one bitter tasting word, laced with anger and rage.

“How…?”

       they were the same.      at a core,      beyond the frail infinitesimal marring,     the childish ideals of morals and fragile little sentiments.      they reflected.     one the un-augmented image.     the silhouette stark before a mirror,        one the reflection;     warped,     distorted.      a form mutated and mutilated.      the same form,   y e t,   warped by the space between them, intricate differences inflicted.      elongated shapes, curves and edges altered, bent and borrowed.      till one was abstract.     yet core details stood stock still,    unyielding a distinction.                               at a core,      they were the same.  

       one ran aside the angels, mingling among their wings.      never quite with them,     or,      one of them.        yet, under their cascading light all the same.      the other lurked among shadows,       bided by their lingering overcasts.        enveloped by the mere absence of light.   dwelling and revealing in it.      becoming one with it.

      the cat and mouse they played.      the darkness and the light competing, combusting.      starting slowly.         he crept in,   lingering shadows elongated,     warping. growing.      a letter, a word. a name.      all those people. those little    p a w n s    chucked his way one by one.     all those little problems, little games;     find him,     help her.      s  a v e   t h e m.     till the shadows were tall, long since infiltrated, pitted in a mind.     they met.     the darkness needed no name, it had a face.       it dwelled away. tunnel-ed away, kept at bay by the iceman. questioned and tortured. it never once wavered.      till, he was mentioned.     a few words exchanged for others. it learned.      biding time.     till it crept back once more. one more game.    fun.     till it wasn't. a darkness seemingly outshone.   but, the light's time was also numbered.      illuminations dying.           it seemed over.   but,  the light glowed on, the darkness nothing but a shadow in a mind.        i t   w a s   g o n e . yet,      inevitably.       it wasn't.

      a chin weaves, oscillating side to side. planes of a neck hollowing rhythmically.      reptilian in a form.     bobbing hypnotically.

              unwinding, a curl of lips unfurls.               he seems    g i d d y .

          “   is that really a question?          as if I could do something as pedestrian as dying.   ”
