“Okay, we’ve walked in silence long enough. Tell me what happened. What is Barry doing here? I didn’t see Cisco anywhere nearby, so they can’t have had the same idea we did.

“He lives here,” Iris said, promising herself she wouldn’t go the same route Barry had and deliver half-truths.

Stacy frowned. “Cisco lives here?”

“No. Barry.”

“Barry lives here?”

She nodded. “Yep.”

“As in, it’s his hometown?”

“Uh-huh.”

“So, we came to the one small town on the map that this messed up crush of yours just happens to live when he’s not at school and is probably staying with his parents?”

“He definitely is.”

“Why do you say that?”

“I ran into his mother.” She paused, then met Stacy’s gaze. “Nora Allen.”

“Yeah…Iris…West? I think?” He tried to jog his memory; as if he didn’t have her first and last name all over his planner and notebooks not yet thrown away from high school.

“Ah.” Henry recalled right away. “Yes, I remember her.”

“You never even met her.” Barry gawked.

“Well, no, but I’m friendly enough with Detective West, and she’s his daughter. Besides, I knew it was no coincidence you ended up staying late most nights ‘studying’ at Jitters in Central City.”

“I was studying!”

“You look like you need to talk.”

Iris sighed loudly again, dramatically, tiredly.

“I am tired of talking!”

The woman chuckled. “Maybe just one more time?”

Iris popped the requested cherry into her mouth and chewed.

“Why the hell not? I won’t remember most of this in the morning anyway.”

“Probably not.” The woman grinned.

“Well, there’s this guy…” she trailed off.

“There always is.”

“And I’m in love with him.”

That peaked the woman’s interest. She took a sip of her whiskey.

“Really…”

“But he has a girlfriend!” Iris huffed.

The woman snorted. “They always do.”

“So, there you have it. That’s my problem.”

“Have you ever thought of…I don’t know…stealing him away?” The woman suggested slyly.

Chapter 11 -

“Barry,” he barked, when saying his name in a normal tone did nothing to pull him from his trance.

“Wha- Oh, hi, Cisco.”

Cisco slid into the opposite side of the booth.

“‘Oh, hi, Cisco’?” he mocked. “Dude, what’s up with you?”

“You know this isn’t my scene, Cisco.” He shrugged.

“So then why are you here?”

“Becky thinks that-”

Cisco held up his hand to stop him.

“If I have to hear one more time that you’re doing something because Becky told you to, I’m going to strangle you myself.”

It took a moment for Barry to recover from that shock.

“Well, it’s the truth.”

Iris sighed and fell back on the couch.

“I feel like such an idiot.” She paused, tears welling up again. “It’s just like…like…”

“No,” Stacy ordered. “Don’t say it. Don’t you say it. This is not just like Eddie.”

“Isn’t it?” she sniffled.

“Eddie was a liar, and he cheated, and he got himself put in jail for aiding and abetting drug dealers on the south side of town.”

Iris sighed dramatically. “Both broke my heart though,” she muttered.

“Yeah, I know.” Stacy came to sit beside her and held her tight.

“How am I going to get past this, Stace?” she asked, numb.

“By reminding yourself that you only saw the guy a couple times, so at best it was a crush. You weren’t in love with him, Iris. You weren’t even dating. That means he’ll be ten times easier to get over than Eddie was.”

“I don’t know…” she considered. “I felt such a connection to him, way more than I ever felt with Eddie.”

Chapter 10 -

He was avoiding eye contact again, and she could see he was truly torn. Did he want one or didn’t he? If it was just a question that didn’t mean anything, wouldn’t he say so? Maybe he wanted to just forget he’d brought it up and change the subject. She was becoming just as wary of the situation as he appeared to be.

“Uh…” She looked around the bowling alley, hunting for a distraction. “Do you want me to get another liter of Pepsi?” she offered. “We could play another round.” Her thumb jutted toward the lanes. “Or we could head over to the arcade.” She pointed across the room when his brows furrowed together.

He turned to look in the direction of the arcade for the longest time before he faced her again.

“That sound good? The arcade?” she asked, but even her voice was sounding strained.

“I’d love that,” he said, sounding so relieved.

“Great! Well then-”

“But I can’t,” he said, just as quick as she’d shot to her feet. She frowned and he tugged on her wrist. “Please sit down, Iris. There’s something I have to tell you.”

She was reluctant, but when she saw that most of the people in the room were at least five lanes away from them, she decided to obey.

“What is it?” she asked, her ankles twisting around each other and her calves clenching – as they tended to do when she got nervous. A different kind of butterflies swirled in her stomach, and she really hoped it was all her imagination and she hadn’t guessed correctly that things were about to go very, very wrong.

“I haven’t been…entirely honest with you.”
