The priority is not messages, or utopian concepts, or plans. We know things need to change! The black oak savanna of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, one of only two patches that remain in Illinois - or, indeed, anywhere. A walk from the Paul Douglas Environmental Education Center to the lake is just a mile and a half, but takes us over dunes and swales and through a succession of plant communities. More than 400 species of plants are found here. This is where botanist Henry Cowles developed his ideas about plant ecology at the turn of the last century. Our little group is looking for guidance in caring for Evanston’s Clark Street Beach Bird Sanctuary, a tiny spot by comparison - but every acre of lakefront habitat is precious.
In our city arboretum, butterfly weed (Asclepias tuberosa) is blossoming as golden alexander (Zizia aurea) fades.
