I think contemporary witchcraft sort of sterilized spirit work. There's this view that spirits are wish granters and it often kinda lacks reciprocity but also the general idea that spirits can say no. Spirits aren't obligated to reveal their true nature to you. Spirits aren't obligated to give you everything. Spirits can also reject offerings and tell you what they want and bargain with you on pacts. They're autonomous beings and beings with a great deal more power than we, that's why we go to them.
I feel like many new spirit workers confuse a lack of response either as a sign of apathy or a sign of “potential” willingness by a spirit. Instead I always take no response from a spirit as a hard “no”. When we as humans don’t want to be communicated with i.e. someone trying to sell you something on the street, human nature is to ignore them and carry on in order to avoid wasting each other’s time. I believe that this is a method that the spirits employ also. 🌳
Gwydion: Our Magical Teacher of the Trees 🌳
In the ancient tales of the Mabinogi, Gwydion, son of Dôn, is counted among the most powerful practitioners of natural magic. He can create human-like beings from plants, survive transformations into wild creatures, and he is remembered as one of the earliest bearers of a magician’s wand.
Gwydion's skill in creative and transformative magic is unrivalled. Those who seek to awaken the hidden forces of the natural world may call upon his wisdom when learning to guide their own innate magical power.
Archdruid K. Hughes of the Anglesey Druid Order teaches that the following 'englynion' or 'song-spell' may be chanted when summoning the guidance and inspiration of Gwydion. Such words are especially suited to workings with trees and nature, the crafting of wands, and the deepening of one’s skill in the magical arts:
Englynion dwi'n canu i fab Dôn,
Ac galwaf y hud o Gwydion.
The translation also rhymes in English:
An englynion I sing to the son of Dôn,
And summon the magic of Gwydion.

Heuldro’r Haf ☀️
The Summer Soltice was wonderful this year! Read below :)
I went to the wonderful Mwsog concert to celebrate the summer solstice, complete with poetry recitals of Y Gododdin, a mock-battle of the Twrch Trwyth (giant mystical boar), and stunning welsh music from the band including Mari Mathias.
I also found a steal in a charity shop on Sunday, this book outlines the folk tales that existed pre- and post- industrial times of Wales written by a former renowned curator of the St. Fagan's Museum of Welsh Life. Much information will be noted for use in the grimoire I'm sure!

St. Teilo’s Day - 9th February
Celebrating the Patron Saint of Welsh Orchards
On the 9th February we observe the patron saint of orchards, St Teilo. He was born in Pembrokeshire in around 500AD, and was a famed healer across the Celtic nations. Most notably, he and a man named Samson planted huge groves of orchard trees stretching for miles as food for the Brythonic people 🌳
Recently I attended a wassail at my new local Bute Park Community Orchard. It has been a wonderful first year of the orchard. We woke the trees up with horns, whistles and banging on pots. We started with a blessing forthe great orchard guardian, a crab apple tree 🍎 Then, we walked to each British orchard tree in turn from pears and apples to plums and prunes to wake them.

Continue writing about them, please keep saying their names. Please keep worshiping them. If you can’t find the strength within yourself to live for yourself, please try to live for them.
I know it’s getting scary. I think it’s going to get scarier. But please, if nothing else. Live.
Thousands of years, hundreds of genocides and crusades and decimation of culture, and yet somehow my Lords still have followers. Somehow I’ve found them. Somehow these names still have meaning. Through all of us they still remain.
Despite the efforts of centuries of suppression and control, My Lord is still alive, because I am alive.

and maybe one day we’ll be free to frolic in fields or dance in forests while we chant without fear.

The gods (of any "pagan" pantheon) have seen their worshippers go into hiding. The gods have followed them there. They'll continue to follow us - accompanying us, supporting us, wherever we find ourselves.

The lovely thing about being a witch in the modern era is you can do SO MANY THINGS to help when you're ill. Modern meds + folk remedies + small magic = excellent combo.

To the Gods lost to time
We may have no way of knowing your name, but we do know you. We know you existed.
We may have no way of knowing what purpose you served in your pantheon, but we appreciate the work that you did, and the work you continue to do.
You may be older than what we think of as the first civilizations, you may be older than evolution, but thank you for being with our ancestors.
Thank you for holding their hands, teaching them how to hunt, which plants were edible, how to walk, how to develop.
It's because of you that humanity exists in the way we know today.
I'm sorry you've been lost to time.
May the forgotten gods be found deep in our collective memories or deep under the earth one day so we may know their names once more
Amaethon
welsh god of agriculture
These pictures make me think of the two sides of Amaethon who I worship.
Amaethon the Younger: God of the lamb and calf, nurturer of livestock and fields, ripener of fruit and the midday sun. God of hedgerows, cider and herbs.
Amaethon the Elder: God of the bountiful harvest, bringer of autumn. God of natural cycles and the changing of the leaves, of manual labour, of the earth and heavy toil. God of the herd, vegetables and the scythe.

O’ Amaethon, I give praise to thee,
For a blessed harvest and a bountiful reaping
I revere the natural world and the cycles of nature,
In your name, I pledge devotion to it for evermore
In the month of August, Amaethon is the deity that resonates the most for me in my practice. His presence is seen in the turning of the leaves from green to yellow, the fruiting of the blackberries, and the farmer’s busyness in the fields.
He is a guiding force when pursuing a deeper connection to the land and the cycles of the earth. I admire his ancient wisdom and the lessons he offers to lead a more sustainable way of life.

I’ve been working with Gwydion for a little while! He is my patron deity and Welsh god, known for his excellence in magic, his tutelary nature and his relationship to plants/trees.
He empowers me to become more competent in my practice and to embrace nature and science. I see him as a guiding force and he speaks to me through the wind that flows between the trees in the forest

I’m a Welsh polytheist! 🏴So I’m engaged in Welsh and other folk traditions around the British isles! My craft or practice involves a lot of native herbalism and the work of the Physicians of Myddfai.
I just think that having altars to the gods in our homes is so beautiful. It’s a practise that’s been carried down for thousands of years no matter how hard people have tried to wipe it out.
Sometimes I wonder why I have a “hidden” altar even when I live without fear of practicing but then I think of my ancestors who would’ve had to put away their ceremonial items when preparing food or fulling cloth. There’s still culture in practicality.
