Alright, time for a second glimpse at next comic as Work-in-Progress. Let me introduce you to Angus and Aidan, brothers on an adventure. This is another set of frames from my next graphic novel, Noni’s Wedding. They’re hunting butterflies in a Sussex forest.... This has been. Funny old week. The routine that’s allowed me to get some traction on drawings for this project went out the window as two days this week — rather than schlepping up to London on the train — I was in Brighton guest lecturing to first years at Brighton University on how some of the tools and conventions of comics can be applied to storytelling in general. It was delightful to be in town, to connect with students and try to spark something and to have the good morning cuddles with my kids that I miss when I’m out the door at 5:30 in the morning. At the same time, the ease of a local commute also meant I didn’t have my sacred, headphones on, head down drawing time on the train. Hence the 10 panels I’d have liked to have finished is actually 5. Oh well. A glimpse of what I’m working on: a frame from my next graphic novel, Noni’s Wedding. I’ve been working on this book and thinking about this book for so long that I get down from time to time thinking: “why on earth isn’t it done already?” When I’m less generous, I berate myself with “but you used to make so much more art back in the day.” In moments of greater personal generosity, I remember mitigating circumstances, like: parenthood, marriage, a challenging and rewarding non-art day job, 3 hours of commuting daily, oh and sleep. But since the beginning of the year — and after reading James Clear’s simple but powerful book, Atomic Habits — I’ve committed to just doing a bit, even if it seems a trifle, everyday. It’s starting to add up. My plan is to post a frame every Friday. Went to see Dr Ian Williams (@thebaddr) at #cartooncounty last night. Great talk with @fitchalex1975 about his new graphic novel, “The Lady Doctor” just out from @myriad_editions. The book is fantastic and as always, Ian — as both a medical doctor and a cartoonist/graphic novelist — was full of pithy observations. First post of 2019. On Friday I took myself out on a hot date and went to the Royal Academy to check out their exhibit of Klimt and Schiele drawings from the Albertina Museum in Vienna. The complete mastery each of them had over line and contour is profound. These portraits are three of Schiele’s. Limited myself to 5 minutes for each study, then added the lettering, tone and red later on the train and then at home. Good to continually fill the inspiration battery like this. And I’m lucky as the RA is a ten minute walk from work. Took the kiddos to see “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse”. It was a 10:30 am screening on a Thursday so understandably empty theater. But it was magical nonetheless. Character studies for the next graphic novel. Lyndsay and I’ve been watching Little Drummer Girl on BBC. Florence Pugh is fantastic and the reference/inspiration for these studies.
