AU where vermouth ran some kind of scheme to fake sharon vineyard's death while making it look to jodie that she was the one who caused it and then showed up to jodie as chris vineyard, the daughter of the woman jodie "killed", saying things about cycles of violence and retaliation and murder but how she's not there to take revenge as she was never closed with her mother anyway and she knew what her mother did as a job so jodie probably had a good reason. puts up a great act and all but in the sense of treating it like some play she's written a script for, and the script was designed to be dramatized with specific themes in mind instead of designed to be read as reality, although in her mind she thinks it's not an issue and doesn't mean she can't still pull it off. the two bonded over supposedly shared experience and fell into a weird toxic relationship, which is all according to vermouth's plan/script

trying to rehabilitate that dumpster fire (haha fire) that happened to zuko when i was doing gaang references. i think i came up with something more suitable
when i was thinking about the fire lord's attire, i came up with the idea that it could be made of the skin of dragons, killed by firebenders. zuko gets his one from his father, like a cursed inheritance, soaked in blood.
do you think he can feel it trickling down his back?
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

on one hand, any kind of chapter focused on haibara is so cathartic and interesting.
on the other, i don't understand the inconsistency of haibara's character this chapter:
if haibara was actually out for revenge, she wouldn't have felt so scared and wanted to hide from gin/ vodka. she would've been like conan and did a bunch of reckless things. she was a "traitor" who wanted to hide from the powerful boss she betrayed, fully expecting death if her hiding place was discovered. but this chapter made it seem like she actively tried to use conan as a chess piece in her schemes when all evidence is to the contrary. her literal defining trait was that she keeps telling conan "not to pursue the BO." Plus that bus case tells me that haibara was not living her life for revenge, in fact it was the opposite, she didn't want to live knowing that the BO could come for her and harm anyone else.
i don't agree that rumi and haibara's arcs are mirrors of each other. if anyone's arcs are parallel in the story, i'd say conan and haibara are the most mirrored to each other. they both needed to learn how to depend on others but for different reasons.
in the beginning, haibara/sherry/ miyano shiho was introduced as a kind of soulless, grieving, shell of a person. but when she woke up in ch. 1165, she was so sarcastic which is more like her current self. if she just woke up (based on her old character arc), i think she would've tried to run away from Agasa instead of straight up telling him the truth, since she was paranoid enough to not run to the police, how can she trust someone she just met with the truth not knowing if he's possibly with the BO? Agasa and Haibara's meeting should've been more fleshed out.
honestly, it would've made more sense if haibara saw akemi and wakasa rumi's behavior. Akemi was so determined to get her sister out of the BO that she took a rigged mission out of desperation. Haibara could've seen past wakasa's hostile facade and saw that rumi was also desperate for something against the BO, how her actions mirrored in her sister's death and saw her sister's fate as a cautionary tale of putting yourself in danger unnecessarily. Haibara's flashback could've been about her last meeting with her sister, maybe it would've been Haibara worried and telling her not to do anything reckless before hearing about her sister's failed mission that day. Maybe the flashback could've been Gin delivering the news with glee and telling her that it was a rigged mission and Haibara being angry enough to demand the details.
i'm intrigued that amanda and haibara have similar demeanors, is the author setting her up to share a similar fate?
Yes! Yes! Yessssss! I cannot express how much I agree with your opinion about the whole "revenge" thing! It doesn't make any sense for the Shiho we've known for nearly 30 years to have been interested in revenge from the get-go, nor if she had been, did she actually try to fulfill that desire.
If that had been the actual case she should have been handing information about the Organization like candy to Kudou and he would have jumped at the opportunity to fight them and try to expose them!
Am I supposed to believe she changed her tune only after the Hirota-sensei case?
And very important: all of the lessons we've seen her learn were not about learning about caring for people outside her sister, but to gain courage herself and break free of the past that was trying to kill her both externally and internally.
I never thought of comparing Akemi with Rumi and the more I think about it, the more it fits! That would have been perfect for Shiho!
