its high key starting to piss me off when people pull the whole “now that [x celebrity whos having their 15 minutes of fame] is loved by everyone people are going to try and dig up problematic shit that theyve done” bullshit as some kind of gotcha
like yeah that is at least partially because of people trying to be the fun police but i can guarantee it is also majorly because that celebrity did shitty things and now that theyre being worshipped because of one thing or another people have a reason to bring it up
people arent bringing up dan howell’s history of racist jokes just because he said he prefers the word queer, theyre doing it because theres a whole new wave of people saying they stan him.
people arent bringing up keanu reeves’s habit of taking part of projects with transmisogynistic content just because they think cyberpunk 2077 is a shitty game, theyre doing it because tumblr cant just like celebrities normally and theres masses of people treating him like a do no wrong uwu bean.
people arent bringing up taylor swift’s associations with white supremacy and her continued refusal to address them just because they think her new song is bad or they hate allies, theyre doing it because its indicative that her allyship is incredibly flimsy and white-centric and thus undeserving of the praise she is getting for it.
whipping out the “now people are gonna dig up Problematic Stuff” card as soon as someone you like gets attention is not only really fucking dumb but also incredibly manipulative, because as soon as someone brings up criticism, no matter how valid or deserved it may be, suddenly its overshadowed with OH SO PEOPLE ARENT ALLOWED TO LIKE THINGS??? bullshit.
