wipe the hurt away like dust
For @weirdlybeans! (@magnificentvoidharmony)
Merry (very very late) Christmas! There were some behind the scenes technical difficulties had by the person who was originally assigned to write for you for the @cmgiftexchange, so I volunteered to help out and make sure you got a gift. I really really hope you like it! I think your art is really something special and it's like a little gift every time I see it pop up on my dash, so getting to write something just for you was actually a huge honor. Happy January 10th! LOL (Don't be scared by the Mr. Scratch thing, I needed to use that time in order for it to suit the whole Roy timeline but I promise it's not dark.) I wrote this pretty fast in order to make sure you got a gift ASAP but my hope is that this doesn't come off rushed. I wanted it to feel slow and soft. Thank you for being awesome! I'm forever grateful that you love Hotchgan, because I get to see them through your eyes.
"You're busy, Derek. You don't have time to take on my problems."
"Too busy for family? Impossible."
She opens her mouth to speak but words don't come out. She's crying.
"I don't know what to do. Without Haley, I just…I'm doing my best. When my mom died, it was me and dad…and now it's just me. I'm all he has." She lets out one strangled sob before swiping at her eyes and clearing her throat, refusing to let it continue. "Sorry. I'm being a whiny bitch this morning."
"You are not all he has. We got you. Look, Aaron told me how things went down with him…I know the two of them aren't on good terms…but that doesn't mean we won't help anyway. Family doesn't stop being family over hurt feelings. You think there's anything Roy can say to Aaron that he doesn't already say to himself a hundred times a day? He's preaching to the choir, sis."
She lets out a small laugh and clears the emotion from her throat again. Jess hates crying, especially in front of people. It makes her angry. "They're both idiots."
"You don't have to tell me, girl. I know." He sighs and scrubs his hands back over his head before glancing again at the business card she'd handed him. "Alright. I'm gonna walk through that house and make the call on what needs doing, we're gonna forget everything on that list this joker gave you. You're gonna use one of my agents instead of this guy with the expensive gold leaf card. I got a guy who specializes in old houses like Roy's, he gets history, hell he probably already knows all about the house. He knows all the old houses around here. You can't use some fancy pants city agent used to selling condos for three times what they're worth."
"What about Aaron? He needs you here."
Derek glances down the hall where his two favorite guys are, both still asleep at the ripe hour of 8am. A veritable miracle. "He'll be up for a drive, I'm sure. Getting out of the city and into all that fresh air will do him some good."
