A loud thunder rumbled from outside the shitty apartment window. Mac didn’t complain like he usually did, despite hating the rain. He laid on his stomach, sinking into the dirty couch as he stared at the broken, blank television. He only sat up to grab his vodka bottle, already almost empty. He chugs the rest, just to feel something. Then he reaches for his-..fuck. He’s out of his “substances”. And he spent all his money last night on booze. “I’m so fucking stupid” he thought harshly “of course I’d do that. Sometimes I wish i could just-“ a loud knock made him pause. Shit. Cops? Already? He’s been hiding well! Probably. Then he heard that voice… “Mac..? Hello? Are you in there?” Eli called, knocking on the door again.

Mac’s eyes widened but he didn’t dare utter a word. “Eli?” He thought. “No way. He wouldn’t wanna visit a bum like me. Is this some cruel joke?” He stood up anyway, so quietly. His antennas lowered in dread, looking through the peephole but-…there he was. Eli in all his glory. Exactly the same. He frowned softly “what is this idiot doing?” Mac thought again “wasting his school time to check on me? I didn’t send a drunk text, did I..?” He wanted to stay silent. Let Eli leave so maybe he could do something useful in his life instead of letting him drag Eli down. But then— “Mac? Please tell me you’re alright. You haven’t contacted me in months…I’m worried.” Eli knocked again, softly this time. Mac’s heart ached in sympathy. He didn’t text because he thought he was bothering him…before he could think twice…he reached for the door knob..

The door creaked open and Eli’s face lit up. Eyes (or..eye) widening before relief washed over him. “Oh thank god…I thought something happened! Why didn’t you-…” he trailed off when he saw Mac’s condition. Dirty boxers, worn down graphic tee, eyebags, a messy stubble (somehow). “…Mac. What happened?” He asked quietly, it made Mac panic. “Hm? Oh! shit! Uh-nothing. Sorry, I’m just a mess. Nothings wrong.” Mac waved him off, forcing that cocky grin he used to wear genuinely. Now it was just something to brush Eli off. That voice in the back of Mac’s head talked bitterly about him. “You’re disgusting.” It thought “lying to your own friend? For what? To spare your ego? Your embarrassment?” He shook it off. “Mac..you don’t look alright. N-not at all.” Eli reached out to inspect his face, but Mac flinched and recoiled slightly. “…sorry..” Eli muttered quietly, concern mixing with guilt. Damn it. “No no, it’s alright. I’m just..not used to it ya know?” Eli glanced over his shoulder. It smelled of smoke, vodka, and other things he didn’t want to name. It was dark, dirty, and he could see 8 different bottles of vodka on the small counter.

“….Mac, is this why you ghosted me..?” Eli asked quietly, not accusingly but worried. Mac visibly tenses “psh, what?! No! I was just busy with shit. I promise.” Saying that out loud even made him doubt himself. That lie was ass. “Mac please-“ Eli said, brows furrowing as he pushed past Mac. “Hold on now!” Mac said quickly bht it was too late. He slipped by and paused. The apartment was…in shambles, just like Mac. “Oh Mac…” Eli whispered, looking at Mac like he was a kicked puppy. “It looks worse than it is.” Mac replied dumbly. “I’m sorry. I would’ve cleaned if—“ he cut himself off whe. Eli suddenly threw his arms around him. Mac paused, not hugging back just yet. “Oh Mac..why didn’t you tell me? I would’ve gladly helped…” Eli murmured quietly. It made Mac wince sympathetically, suddenly feeling like a total douchebag. “I didn’t wanna fuck up your studying or…whatever you do.” Mac reluctantly hugged Eli back.
