i don't think the Author is taking the pictures in the intro. there are a few pictures that I doubt he would have been able to take (like Blendin and Gideon) and the pictures of the Figi Mermaid and the jackalopes aren't even the same, the intro ones are colored while his are black and white. i'm willing to bet it's just a reference to the intro.
Well in theory it’s new photos mixed with old photos (as shown in this post about the camera)
But about the Fiji mermaid and Jackalope photos being different from the intro you are wrong : )
It is possible the discoloring is from the room light or due to it being a background detail or maybe even the photos were restored
