You are a villain who kidnapped the smart guy on your nemesis team, they tell you that nobody will come for them and that the hero doesn’t care. You didn’t believe them at first but it been a month and nobody shows up and after once again hearing them cry at night you had enough.
“Welcome, Dr. Harold Overton to my humble lair.” I paced back and forth in front of the young man tied to the chair, my cape flapping behind me with the movement. “I know you might be confused as to why you’ve been invited here, and I’m happy to explain in great detail.”
After all, there were not many things that I enjoyed in life nearly as much as I loved monologuing. It was a vice, one that I, as Night Siren, the top super villain in Super City, had very little time to indulge in.
The young man raised his head, his bespectacled gaze meeting my own. I was taken aback for a moment at the sadness I saw there. “Why did you kidnap me?”
“I was just about to explain.” I pushed a button on my wrist, and sat down just as a motorized chair swooped over into place behind me. “You see, I’ve come up with this elaborate trap for Captain Power that will render him weak and helpless…”
“No… you don’t understand.” Harold interrupted, sighing. “Why did you kidnap ME? He won’t care.”
“…” I stared at him silently for a moment, then laughed. “Are you trying to convince me that you aren’t a member of his team? The brain behind his greatest gadgets and plans? Multiple advanced degrees in engineering, robotics, fluent in multiple languages, a master strategist…”
“I’m not saying that I’m not his teammate.” He shrugged, as much as he could while tied up. “I’m just saying that no one will notice… or care that I’m missing.”
“Of course they will! You are the brains behind every successful plan they’ve ever had!” I stood up, having lost my momentum to monologue further, and patted his shoulder. “Trust me, they’ll come rushing in to save you before the night is up.”

The next morning…
I stared at the kidnapped scientist across the breakfast table, feeling tired. He didn’t seem to noticed my gaze, calmly buttering a piece of toast.
