I find Adara standing in the center of town, her arms crossed over her chest and irritation written all over her face.
âYouâre late.â She says flatly as I approach her.
âPunctuality is of the utmost importance, Miss Obsidian.â
I roll my eyes. She wants to lecture me on punctuality? I might not have been on time but I know a thing or two about timing. If I donât get the timing of kills precise and accurate it can kill me.
âTwo things,â I say annoyed. âOne; I can do what I want. You hired me. I could kill you before you had the chance to scream if I wanted to. Secondly, if you want to play the game right, then call me Ember. We are supposed to be on a first name basis after all.â
âYou are forgetting what a Duchess can do, given her title and her power. One bad rumour, one bad word, and your career is over. Youâll be exposed and youâll have nothing to your name.â Adaraâs voice is sharp, cutting the air between us like a knife cutting flesh.
She moves, her face is now so close to my own. Her anger-filled eyes lock with mine.
"You have nothing to expose,â I say quietly, matching her gaze. âYou know nothing of me except that I am a weapon. And those who know me wonât tell you anything.â
"But who will they listen to? A woman with power or scum off the streets trying to make a way for herself. Youâre playing a dangerous game and youâre not experienced enough to win.â
âAnd you,â I growl, âare playing a dangerous game. I said it once and I will say it again. I could kill you right here, right now if I so chose to. Youâd be dead before anyone could hear you scream. Now, why donât you shut up and let me do my job. You let me do my job, and you get to be the Queen.â
