Different Ways to Simplify the Packing Process of Your Move
Moving to a new home is hard work. It is both exciting & taxing as well as demands a lot of advance planning. Itβs even harder and more time-consuming when you lack the know-how and tools to pack efficiently. One of the most efficient ways is to consult and hire the services of the right moving company.
You should know about different ways to streamline the packing process. So, that you can make your next move a smooth one.
Number of packing boxes required
The last thing you want is too little or too many packing boxes. The estimate on the number of packing boxes and moving supplies is needed to be based on the number of bedrooms in your home, the number of people in your household, your lifestyle and overall packing style. So before you spend money on boxes and supplies, make sure to use this helpful tool.
Order packing kits
Do not forget to also order specific packing kits. For instance, if you have a good number of wine glasses and coffee mugs, then consider using glass pack kits with dividers that are specifically designed to move glassware safely. If you plan to move dinnerware, then consider using dish-packing kits with foam pouches and cell dividers to safely move fragile plates. Not only will these kits speed up the packing process, but the kits will also ensure that your items arrive at the new home without a scratch.
Get organized
After obtaining the correct number of boxes and packing supplies, itβs time to come up with an organizational system for moving. Using box labels, sharpie markers and color-coded stickers or tape will make it easier to keep track of whatβs inside each box, so you donβt lose items during the move. Organizing your boxes will also help you and your movers know where to put everything once inside the new home.
Know the non-allowable
Before you start packing the boxes, make sure youβve read up on whatΒ notΒ to pack. Moving companies are not allowed to transport hazardous items, perishables and certain valuables. Examples of items that canβt be transported on a moving truck include propane tanks, scuba tanks, fertilizer, matches, pool chemicals, frozen or refrigerated food, plants, produce, tax documents and medicine. Make sure to ask your moving company for a full list of non-allowable before packing the house.
Focus on storage before packing
Bringing items you donβt need or want in the new home is a waste of time. To effectively eliminate clutter and unnecessary belongings, start by creating four separate piles:
Β· Trash pile
Β· Donation pile
Β· Sell pile
Β· Storage pile
Anything that isnβt worth donating, throw in the trash pile. Trash should beΒ discardedΒ responsibly.
Pack room-by-room
To streamline the packing process, focus on one room at a time. Begin with rooms you wonβt need in the days and weeks leading up to the move. For instance, packing up closets, home offices, libraries and living room belongings could be done a month or two before the move. Rooms youβll want to pack up last might include the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, childβs playroom and nursery. Make sure to label and color-code each box with the corresponding room to keep all items organized.
Disassemble furniture and lights
Disassemble as much as possible so that you can fit more belongings inside the truck rental. This will speed up the packing and unpacking process, which, as a result, will make your move less time-consuming and less expensive. Furniture items that typically need to be taken apart before moving include beds, dining tables, modular sofas and dressers. When taking apart lamps, be sure to remove all light bulbs and wrap the base with a protective covering.Β
Save personal items for last
Save personal items and valuables for last. If youβre planning to pack an overnight essentials bag to keep with you during the move, be sure to keep these items organized. You may also want to keep certain valuables, such as expensive jewelry and sentimental items, on you during the move. We donβt recommend transporting these on a moving truck.
Remember
Double-check that the boxes are packed securely. The last thing you want is for items to slip out and break during the move. To prevent this from happening, avoid over packing a box. Large boxes should contain lighter items, such as blankets and pillows, and small boxes should contain heavier items, such as pots and books. After packing up each box, make sure the tops, bottoms and sides are all taped and secured properly.
