Watch Your Waste Project

A project by the Brazilians filmmakers Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem working with video as a social tool in order to create awareness of our daily waste. This project has an ideal to teach art (focusing on film but not limited to) and sustainability altogether by raising awareness towards waste, decomposition and recycling, reflecting on local and worldwide environment and waste, hopping also to plant a seed in order to have a better world to live.

The project has its roots in Bolivia where the duo started to develop their work closer to sustainability, the knowledge learned in Bolivia became a workshop in Brazil for unprivileged areas, evolving to become a project when the duo arrived in Thailand. From January 2015 the duo had been working in Bangkok with the well known international schools Ruamrudee International School and Bangkok Patana International School.

The program contemplates children from 3 to 19 years old (as well being possible to develop the project in a different way for adults) always making different programs to each age groups. Please have a look on the links at the left side to understand our project and to see examples of it.

HOW THE PROJECT STARTED

We started this project in 2015 after traveling to India, Morocco, Bolivia and Peru realizing the amount of garbage lying around, specially plastic bags, bottles, straws and plastic package, reflecting on how plastic can be extremely unnecessary and how it can be consumed and then disposed so quickly. Back in Brazil after a great green learning period in Bolivia, we started to give a series of lectures about Sustainability for Public Schools on how to reduce our consumption, garbage and costs. When we reached Thailand, the amount of plastic used from the street food to convenience shops and shopping malls made us stop and think. Specially as travelers we started to reflect on how much do we waste while moving cities and countries. It was time to develop a project with a subject that makes us think so often about it, specially living in Thailand realizing how the whole country has a really high usage of plastic which is so intrinsic with food.

PROGRAMS

We have developed two different programs for different ages that’s flexible to adapt the school’s timetable. “Art + Recycle Program” has two modalities, one for 3-5 years old and another one to 6-9 years old. Please check the details of this program here.

AIM OF “WATCH YOUR WASTE PROJECT”

To raise awareness towards plastic consumption then to raise awareness to the general consumption on unnecessary things, developing a thought process on asking oneself about the need to consume.

To get to know and start to commit on one’s way to the 5 R’s on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Re-fuse and Rot. Being able to act on each of them individually and possible in a community.

To understand what happen with plastic after disposed, getting to know the situation of plastic consumption and litter at the city and country the students live.

Empower students in order to know how to make their own films, be on social issues, to express themselves, to compose an activity of the school or to work in the future. (Only for the Full Film Project)

To be able to work in a professional environment as a group, getting responsibilities and developing an individual but also a collective work. (Only for the Full Film Project)

To share their experience as well precious information about an important matter with the whole school, as well with the media (nationally and internationally) by sending articles to blogs, websites and newspaper, as well sending the video to film festivals worldwide. (Mainly but not limited to the Full Film Project)

WORKING WITH SCHOOLS IN ASIA

In Bangkok we had the opportunity to work with well known international schools as Ruamrudee International School and Bangkok Patana International School. Our aim is to keep developing and applying this project in other schools and also other countries. In 2015 we still aim to work with international, local schools and communities in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, aiming to keep developing this project in India and Nepal by 2016.

FLEXIBILITY OF THE PROGRAM

The program is very flexible in order to adapt (i) the needs of the school, (ii) the reality of the city the school is located (iii) the time the school dispose to work with the children and (iv) the needs on the level awareness for the students and community.

ART + RECYCLE PROGRAM

Focus of the Program To raise awareness about general waste, how to reduce, re-use, refuse, recyle and rot different kind of waste, specially plastic materials. To reflect on the problems that our waste cause and harm our world and learn by making on how waste can be recycled and re-used into something new and useful to oneself and the community. All subjects to the approached by making the waste closer to their reality, being able to understand what happens eg. the milk bottle after it finishes and the whole process of going to the bin, the truck and how much time it will stay at the dump before it vanishes completely.

Who the workshop is directed to The Art + Recycle Program is directed to children between 3 to 9 years old. How does it work . 

For both modalities, it is taught a class on top of the focus of the program above, changing the approach for each age group. The following bellow are the different activities of each age group.  > Activities directed to 3 to 5 years old.  The main activity is to make a planter using a plastic bottle, to create a face to the bottle with discharged materials the school might have and adding a name to the bottle, which became their friends, learning how important and fun it is to re-use materials which were meant to be thrown away. Also another activity was to let the students is to plant a seed in the planter, by touching the soil, compost and also worms, getting closer to the nature. The idea is to place all planters at a visible place at the school so the students can watch the plants growing, seeing a new life coming out of something that didn’t have an use anymore and it could be out there harming the world by taking at least 450 years to be decomposed at a landfill.

> Activities directed to 6 to 9 years old.  The second modality of this program have the following activities: To learn how much time several materials take to decompose in a relaxing, funny and collaborative way. A second activity would be to give one material to each group in order to develop on and prepare a presentation of the material in a creative, critic and collaborative way. The presentation might focus on the time to decompose the material, what people should consider before and after using it, what are other creative ideas rather than throwing it in the bin?

Duration  This program can be developed during classes of after class. [a] 1 classroom / 1 week to 2 weeks workshop (classes everyday) [b] 1 to 2 classrooms / 1 month workshop (classes everyday OR on every other day)  [c] 2 to 3 classrooms / 2 months workshop (classes on every other day)  _Option [a], possible to extend to the following week giving the  Full Film Project Program workshop for Secondary. _Options [b] and [c] possible to combine the Full Film Project Program for Secondary at the same time than the Art & Recycle workshop.

Learning Objectives:

- Empowerment: Students learn how to make a new product out of discharged materials, getting creative ideas before trashing something.

- Creativity and innovation: Students are able to get creative by needing to create things with discharged and broken materials, out of a subject which is most of the time new for them, needing to innovate to deliver what was asked for the exercise. 

- Responsibility: Students are asked not to waste during their activities which they need to commit to this thought process, that actually able them to inovate more and get more creative.

- Communication and collaboration: For 3-5 years old they learn about sharing the objects which are not always equal to everyone. For the 6-9 years old they need to create a piece in total collaboration and present to camera in a equal way, so everyone needs to have their role/part.

- Critical thinking: For the whole process students are motivated to have a critical thinking about the materials on the class, their consumption everyday, to go back home and look around for the waste that is generated.

FULL FILM PROGRAM

Focus of the program To raise awareness towards plastic consumption withing the school and beyond, then to raise awareness on consumption of unnecessary things, developing a thought process on asking oneself about the need to consume. By reflecting on this theme, the students will be mentored to make their own professional film (from writing, to film it and marketing it) with their ideas on how they would like to address this subject.

Who the workshop is directed to The Full Film Project is directed to Middle School, High School or people up to 25 years old.

Outcome A group student film about plastic usage for each class from 5-7 to 12-15 minutes. The approach and style of the film will be decided in a democratic way by the students.

Duration: This workshop can be done during classes or after class. [a] 1 classroom / 1 week to 2 weeks workshop (classes everyday, 1h to full day) [b] 1 to 2 classrooms / 1 month workshop (classes everyday or on every other day - 1h to 2h) [c] 2 to 3 classrooms / 2 months workshop (classes on every other day - 1h to 2h) _Option [a], possible to extend to the following week giving the Art & Recycle workshop for Elementary and another week for Secondary. _Options [b] and [c] possible to combine the Art & Recycle workshop for Elementary and Primary at the same time than the Full Film Project Program.

How does it work

(Part 1) From the idea of making a film about plastic, firstly it’s discussed about the reality of the city and country where the workshop is being hold, how much garbage the population make, where all the garbage of the city goes to, what happens to the garbage and how this could affect the quality of the population’s life etc., gathering more information where we can get to know what is happening in the city and the environment. Also bringing numbers on waste around our globe and introducing notions on reduce, refuse, reuse, rot and recycle, finally meditating on how our acts reflect on those numbers

(Part 2) After getting a panorama on micro and macro waste, the program focus in teaching all details how to make films, all possibilities on style, tone and approach, script, camera shots, audio, art direction, roles on films, music research and promotion of films. After getting a panorama, we will be focusing in documentaries, starting to develop altogether their own film about plastic usage (or the material the school/students would like to focus) in their own community. All decisions are made in a democratic way by the whole group trough brainstorm and votes. Once decided how the students wants to approach the film, they will be divided into film functions. (Part 3) The third part consists of producing the film, the students will make tests on the camera and sound classes, while they will write and produce their own story making decisions on many details as who to interview, which action to make, how to deliver the message etc. The students will be encouraged to take risks, think out of the box and making important decisions as well getting responsibilities, always getting mentoring from us in order to have make sure the workshop runs smoothly and the students are able to deliver a professional documentary film on time with excellence. When the film is finished, it would be made a major exhibition and then promoted to local/ national/ international blogs, websites and film festivals.

Learning Objectives:

- Empowerment: Students learn how to make a professional film with feedback on professional film makers for the school project and beyond.

- Creativity and innovation: Students get knowledge on different ways of making a film and they decide in a democrat way how their film would look like defining style, approach, tone and all other details, with an incentive to think out of the box making an original work.

- Responsibility: Students have holes as directors, coordinating groups, which also have individually their own responsibility on making their project.

- Communication and collaboration: Working as groups students needs to be able to work in a integrate way, helping each other, as some groups depend on others to move forward.

- Critical thinking: For the whole process students are motivated to have a critical thinking from the subject to their decisions on what to do, from the choice of each material to work, the quality and creativity of their work and the work as a whole.

[FEES] All fees includes: Rate for two teachers (daily), Depreciation on professional equipment* fee, Filming classes, Lending the equipment to students, Editing videos and converting it to internet (all other rates are fixed, that’s why the rates are different depending on the duration). *Equipment used: Canon 7D, Canon 60D, Canon lenses 50mm and 100mm, Rokinon Lenses 14mm, Go Pro Hero, Tascam DR-40 audio recorder, Rodhes Mic Pro, Shoulder Pad Optika and Mac Book Pro with software Final Cut.

*Possible to make programs for more than 4 weeks by mixing the classes at the same time. **Please note that for the 1 week program, ideally it would happen Monday to Monday, or Tuesday to Monday at least. The weekend is needed in order to prepare the editing of the original film.

Lara Jacoski, Brazilian, film maker for 7 years with an advertising BA. She had lived in London for three years embracing the culture, studying and making films for NGO’s, artists and art events.   

Patrick Belem, Brazilian, has journalism BA and makes films for 7 years, also a photographer and a musician. He had lived in Australia and Argentina meeting people, making art and working in farm in a volunteer basis.

Both of them work together for three years as Bem-te-vi Produções.

The group was born in 2012 during an expedition to Morocco where both took an art residency producing projects in collaboration with international and local artists, besides individual works. In this first project they spent a month researching trough the country before taking the art residency for 15 days in Casablanca, where they developed projects under the theme: “Progress: Construction or re-construction”.

After Morocco the next stop was India, they’ve spent two months documenting the environment and the truth of Indian streets, traveling without a destiny to more than 20 cities and villages, going to local places and walking trough the streets in order to understand the Indian culture. The result of this experience was the independent documentary “Everyday India”.  

Back to Brazil in 2013, Bem-te-vi (from the bird Great Kiskadee) was officialized and the independent company which started working with companies and Brazilian/international artists, while they’ve been improving the language of the videos and searching for the best way to use the abilities of the duo, that is to produce high quality videos with social content in the most diverse situations, connecting people and lives.

In 2014 they have got selected to a program funded by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, to make a project called “Project Profile” in Bolivia and Peru. A feature documentary film which focuses to empower people by making people get inspired by other people like them, showing the beauty of common people who has much to share about your actions and vision of the world.

In 2015 the duo decided to live for an year in Asia. This time they could accomplish an old desire of visiting Thailand and developing their social programs at this beautiful country that in a way it relates deeply with Brazil. In Thailand, Lara and Patrick are focusing the use of plastic as their main subject in order to develop projects, as well workshops for schools combining film and sustainability.

Plans for the future? Beyond working with different schools in Thailand focusing in their projects in order to raise awareness of social issues, Lara and Patrick aim to come back to and work at their beloved India and get a chance to get to know Nepal.

To travel is the way the duo found to expand the knowledge of the human been and your space, producing content of what they see and live, learning, experiencing and sharing it with people.
