SEDUCTION  STARTERS  ---   ACCEPTING

          “     ah  ,   for  a  moment  i  thought  you  wouldn’t  come.     ”          BEARING  A  PLEASANT  SMILE  ,   THE  PRINCE  GREETS  HER  WITH  AN  ENLIVENED  QUIP   ---   he’s  always  retained  a  teasing  demeanor  ,   especially  when  in  the  presence  of  the  lovely  princess  rosaline .   she  brings  out  a  different  side  of  him  ,   one  that  is  gentle  ,   nurturing .   it’s  a  pleasant  contrast  to  the  cold  formalities  expected  within  the  castle  ,   and  he  welcomes  the  change  in  pace  readily .   

& HER HEART FLUTTERS AS HE SPEAKS, a feeling of warmth residing within that she cannot place as anything else but home— found in the person she adores the most, it is like the crackling fire that rests on the hearth, the phantom embrace that she feels with her each moment she is reminded that he will always find her. ❝I know you won’t,❞ her words are quiet, near silent, ❝but you’re here, aren’t you?❞ 

( as long as we are together, you never need to worry. )  

There is no mention of the way he takes her hand, despite the way this moment feels so intimiate— as if this is only for her. ❝Raspberry leaf. It’s my favourite.❞ She breaks the silence, turns away & reluctantly pulls her hand from his in order to finish making the tea, despite the way it almost hurts.❝Would you like something to eat, too?❞

( would you like to spend my life with me? she barely manages to keep herself from saying, never daring to be quite so forward. )

          HINTS  OF  RASPBERRY  WAFT  THROUGH  HIS  SENSES  ,   languidly  inhaling  the  sweet  scent  and  painting  it  to  memory .   the  floral  fragrance  reminds  him  of  her  ;   perhaps  he  vaguely  recognizes  the  smell  from  nights  where  limbs  were  entwined  ,   face  buried  into  the  crook  of  her  neck .   those  were  the  memories  gavin  would  never  forget   ---   the  small  ,   fleeting  moments  that  helped  ease  the  incessant  fluttering  of  his  heart .   it  was  in  her  that  he  found  his  compass   /   the  starry  beacon  in  the  sky  that  would  always  lead  him  home .

& THE STORY OF THE GIRL BORN FROM ROSES WAS ONE MANY KNEW, especially in the village she resided in with the man who find her & called her his daughter despite her lack of relation, treating her as one of his own until his untimely passing when she was still young— young enough to believe the world was good yet old enough to see the cruelty that lay beneath the joyful exteriors projected by each person around her.

It is cruelty that she sees in the way they dance around her as if she did not exist for so long, even now barely accepting her. It is disgust she hears in their voices as they whisper the tale of the beast man who did not know love, hatred for someone who likely did not exist.

Quite often, they warned her of the man who lived in the castle in the woods & his emotionless heart, cursed to wander the halls for the rest of his eternity, to meet death either by another’s hand or the curse bestowed upon him so many years ago— a man none knew by name but only by voice, a tale passed down for so long that he surely must have been deceased by this point. The curse of the man who lived only by the petals of a flower was one she had grown aware of through the reading of books from the village’s library & the words of those who had seen the man & lived to tell the tale.

It is now that she finds herself in the gardens of the man’s castle, not wishing to catch even a glimpse. It was not of her intention, an accident that she stumbled across the garden while searching for a place to read in the shade that was offered by the leaves of trees in the middle of the day. Sunlight filtered in the woodland was not blocked by the building, albeit that was to be expected, but it was old in ways she could not imagine, ivy snaking its way up from the ground to each window, yet the roses in the garden were not wilted, fresh as any she had ever seen & the urge to touch them was difficult to resist.

( they were her home, the flowers were. they embraced her in their softness & caged her with their thorns; a protection she had never desired but found herself grateful for. )

She remained silent as she treaded close, kneeling by the flowers & brushing her fingers against crimson petals so lightly the plant barely moved. Her eyes remained fixated on them, the girl oblivious to the shadow that seemed to move behind her as she whispered in a soft voice, filled with awe; ❝how beautiful you are.❞

           WHO  IS  HE  /   BUT  AN  UNLOVABLE  BEAST  IN  THIS  TRAGIC  STORY ?     whispers  of  fear  about  the  man  who  lurks  within  the  castle  was  a  tale  often  told  in  the  quaint  little  town  of  conques  ,   the  forbidden  prince’s  name  trickling  down  from  the  trembling  lips  of  traitors  nestled  among  its  people .   all  that  anyone  knew  of  him  narrowed  to  that  pitiful  night  many  years  prior  ,   that  dramatically  ended  with  a  lifelong  curse  :   your  frozen  heart  will  stay  forever  cold  ,   only  until  you  learn  to  love  ,   and  someone  can  love  you  in  return .

          although  victor  didn’t  pay  much  mind  to  what  the  witch  had  told  him  ,   the  rumors  had  spread  like  wildfire  ,   until  the  severity  of  it  all  left  him  shackled  to  the  walls  of  the  castle  ,   far  too  leery  to  venture  back  into  the  public  eye  once  more .   these  days  ,   the  prince  spent  his  time  tending  to  the  garden  along  the  outskirts  of  his  land .   there  was  something  comforting  in  it  ,   as  well  as  the  fresh  herbs  and  vegetables  becoming  a  staple  in  his  cooking .   this  garden  was  important  to  him  ,   not  only  in  terms  of  survival  ,   but  of  sentiment  as  well .

          SO  WHEN  HIS  GAZE  FELL  UPON  A  WANDERING  STRANGER     traipsing  through  the  bed  of  blooming  flowers  ,   victor  felt  his  entire  body  stiffen  in  surprise .   no  one  had  ever  dared  to  step  foot  onto  his  property  all  this  time  ,   knowing  the  reputation  that  precedes  him .   the  pane  of  the  window  blurs  as  he  exhales  a  staggered  breath  ,   cold  eyes  transfixed  on  the  girl  as  he  memorizes  every  move  she  makes .   the  dress  she  adorns  is  modest  ,   hinting  that  she  is  not  a  noble .   but  what  about  a  spy ?   the  mere  thought  flickering  through  his  subconscious  ignites  him  to  finally  leave  his  perch  by  the  window  to  go  out  and  investigate  the  scene  for  himself .
