Before the Storm Lore Facts
(Note: This is a mostly spoiler-free collection of lore facts from Before the Storm, which means I have left out some rather major spoilers to keep it safe for everyone to read. Unfortunately, I’m unable to provide exact page numbers since I bought Before the Storm on the Kindle, so apologies to all those out there with the paperback version! I’ve also left out several facts that we already know, but if I’ve missed anything you would like to see included or find fascinating, let me know or even add them yourself!)
Azerite
Not only can physical contact with Azerite heighten intelligence, strength, dexterity, and control, but it also instills the holder with an unparalleled sense of calm, focus, and power. Those who touch the mineral are gifted with unique clarity of thought which allows them to effortlessly conjure up effective strategies [Chapter One, Chapter Six].
When the goblins were mining on Kezan, they discovered a vein of Azerite in its liquid form. It is rumored this mining may be the actual reason the volcano erupted, causing Kezan’s destruction [Chapter Three].
When Azerite solidifies and turns red, it becomes inert and loses all its magical qualities. When the mineral liquifies and becomes a warm honey color, however, it possesses an endless amount of innate positive effects [Chapter Three, Chapter Six].
Azerite is a liquid in its natural form, only turning solid when exposed to air [Chapter Fourteen].
The orb on the tip of Gallywix’s cane is solid Azerite. It has gone from gold to red and back to gold again [Chapter Three].
Azerite is Azeroth’s very essence [Chapter Eight].
Azerite neutralizes even the deadliest of poisons when the amount of Azerite is more than the amount of poison [Chapter Twenty-One]. However, if only a small amount of Azerite is added to a poison, it exacerbates the poison’s effect, rather than neutralizing it [Chapter Twenty-One].
Azerite may well be the hardest material on Azeroth, since hardly anything can break it [Chapter Twenty-One].
Azerite promotes insane rates of growth. It can instantly give any bald person a luxurious mane of hair and double the size of any plant [Chapter Twenty-One].
Azerite’s natural state is toward growth and healing [Chapter Twenty-Five].
The Forsaken
The Forsaken are strongly discouraged from revisiting places they loved in life [Chapter Twelve].
Vellcinda (formerly Elsie Benton), once servant to the Menethil household in life, founded the Desolate Council to take care of the Undercity during Sylvanas’ absence [Chapter Twelve].
Forsaken flesh does not heal itself, but there are ways of preventing their bodies from decomposing completely. One can stitch, graft on new muscle, sinew, and skin, or even drink magical potions to mend undead flesh [Chapter Nineteen].
The Desolate Council is made up of twenty-two members: The Prime Governor, who stands at the top, four Governors who make up the governing council, seven Ministers that implement the policies the Governors create, and ten Listeners that meet and speak with any Forsaken who have questions, comments, or complaints about how the leadership governs [Chapter Nineteen].
The majority of Forsaken take on new given names or surnames to mark their rebirth as Forsaken and cast aside their old identities [Chapter Twenty].
The deceased can be reanimated by the Light in a similar manner to how the undead are raised [Chapter Thirty-Five].
Other
Quel’thalas used to frequently hold elaborate, ostentatious ceremonies with mock battles and pomp and pageantry, but now the blood elves find such displays distasteful considering the tragedy their people have experienced in recent years [Chapter Three].
Ever since Anduin was gravely injured by the Divine Bell, his bones ache whenever he is cruel, thoughtless, or in a dangerous situation [Chapter Nine].
Anduin is eighteen and Calia is nearly forty [Chapter Eleven, Chapter Twenty-Eight].
Genn Greymane’s marriage to Mia was not an arranged marriage [Chapter Eleven].
Valeera Sanguinar serves as King Wrynn’s personal spy [Chapter Eleven].
Darnassus is one of Anduin’s favorite places [Chapter Thirteen].
Moonwells contain sacred waters that heal wounds, restore energy and vitality, and purify corrupted areas [Chapter Thirteen].
Tauren chip off pieces of their horn as an offering of respect and friendship [Chapter Fourteen].
Wyll Benton served as personal servant to three generations of Stormwind’s kings (Llane Wrynn, Varian Wrynn, and Anduin Wrynn after them). He taught Anduin how to read [Chapter Sixteen].
The Goldshire Inn has been in the Farley family for years and has offered brews since King Llane’s time [Chapter Twenty-Three].
The price of Peaked Dalaran Red is exorbitant [Chapter Twenty-Three].
At some point before King Terenas Menethil’s death, his daughter Calia secretly fell in love with and married one of Lordaeron’s footmen. When she became pregnant with his child, she confided in her mother, who proceeded to cover it up by taking Calia on a ‘long rest’ to the more remote parts of the kingdom. Calia gave birth to a girl, but it was decided that her husband would raise the girl away from Lordaeron for their safety. Calia and her mother planned to formally acknowledge her daughter and elevate her husband to nobleman’s status after Arthas had married and produced an heir, but that time never came. Her husband and child are presumed dead, but as Calia never actually saw them perish during the scourge invasions, it is possible they are still alive to this day [Chapter Twenty-Five].
Before the events of this novel, Anduin had never been to Stromgarde Keep [Chapter Twenty-Eight].

On the Sin’dorei: Magical Addiction
A Background
After seven thousand years of constant exposure to the radiant energies of the Sunwell, the high elves unknowingly developed a dependence on the very arcane magic the fount was sustaining them with. When the Sunwell was destroyed at the tail end of the Third War, the newly renamed blood elves were dismayed to discover that they were growing sick without the magical fount. It was then that they realized they had become addicted to the Sunwell’s energies after relying on it for generations, and so the blood elves set off in search of a cure for their ailment. Through Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider’s efforts, the elves learned how to siphon magic from artifacts, the environment, and mana-bearing creatures as a means of temporarily sating their hunger for magic [Blood of the Highborne, Chapter Four, The Warcraft Encyclopedia: Blood Elves].
Symptoms & Effects
Magic withdrawal is marked by a variety of symptoms including, but not limited to, lethargy, sweats, aching pain, and difficulty focusing. Over time, one can even develop a resistance to the magic they feed on, meaning they need an ever-increasing amount of magic to ease their addiction pangs. However, blood elves who indulge their addiction to excess run the risk of transforming into one of the wretched [Blood of the Highborne, Chapter Four]. Given that the hunger for magic is intense and particularly strong doses of arcane magic can induce anything from emotional numbness to drunkenness, it is not difficult for the sin’dorei to lose themselves to their addiction [Blood of the Highborne, Chapter Four, Quest: Bloodgem Crystals].
Although all elves are addicted to magic, some suffer from withdrawal far more than others. The very young and the very old, for example, are particularly susceptible and are likely to die without a source of magic to feed on. On the other hand, the elven Farstriders are less affected by magical dependence than their brethren [Blood of the Highborne, Chapter Four].
The hunger for magic is an endless one that is not easily sated. Within several hours of feeding on mana, the yearning for magic returns [Blood of the Highborne, Chapter Four].
Addiction in the Post-TBC Era
There has been some debate as to whether or not the sin’dorei are still addicted to magic following the Sunwell’s revival. While it appears that they no longer have any symptoms of withdrawal or experience magical cravings as they once did, their addiction may not actually be cured once and for all by the new Sunwell like some believe [World of Warcraft Chronicle Volume III, pg. 159]. Dialogue added after The Burning Crusade strongly implies that the elves are still addicted to magic. For example, the narrator of the blood elf introduction cinematic says, “Over time, the Sunwell’s light could cure the blood elves of their cursed state” [YouTube: World of Warcraft Cataclysm Blood Elf Intro]. Moreover, Reliquary leader Tae’thelan Bloodwatcher continues to look for a permanent cure for his race’s ailment in Cataclysm [NPC: Tae’thelan Bloodwatcher Dialogue]. It is also worth mentioning that, even with the reignited Sunwell to feed on, a group of high elves at Quel’lithien lodge succumbed to the lure of a magical artifact and turned into withered [Quest: Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy].
Seeing as the blood elves’ reliance on the magical fount was the catalyst for their addiction in the first place, then it stands to reason that even though the new Sunwell is a unique fusion of light and arcane magic, the fount is more of a palliative than a cure. If it were to be destroyed again, the blood elves would likely relapse, bereft of the Sunwell’s sustaining energies once more. Additionally, as was the case with the elves of Quel’lithien lodge, it is still possible to overindulge on magic and become one of the withered. In short, while the blood elves no longer suffer from any form of withdrawal, they are still dependent on the magical fount and, by extension, arcane magic.

♠️ for gara!
“Oh a new face! It’s always such a pleasure to do a reading for someone new! We will get to know what fate has in store for you, and I will get to know a new person too!” Beaming, Orlenna gestured at the seat across from her. Her eyes flitted over the knight, and she shuffled the deck with a soft pull of amusement on her purple painted lips. “You have such pretty eyes. I love that hue on you.”
Wiggling her fingers, the cards spread outwards in a fan and she gestured for Garaeve to pick three of them. Once it was done, she tapped a finger to her chin and looked between the scenes on them and the other elf. “It seems the cards like it too. Look at all the gold here? Sometimes, when there’s a consistent show of color, well. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, hm?”
