the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this

my overall opinion of the whole "i became a white nationalist because people called me racist for no reason" talking point is that while I do think spurious accusations of bigotry are a problem, if your immediate reaction to being called racist is to become an actual white nationalist then it sounds like they were right about you being racist. like I don't think that accusation was spurious.

one annoying soft climate denial talking point is this idea that oh we're really adaptable...like yes obviously we are, the human social capacity for innovation is breathtaking, but that doesn't mean that we're infinitely adaptable. sometimes people just die, you know? And there is no historical analog to the level of climate change we're going through -- we are already outside the range of global mean temperature in which agriculture, cities, etc, have hitherto developed & existed within. Maybe we will be able to adapt to this but it's by no means a given!

another one is like "oh climate change isn't literally going to destroy the planet or lead to total human extinction" like girl there was no prospect of the world wars doing that either but they were still pretty bad? like how much likely death is needed to shift the dial here. oh it's going to kill a lot of people but not absolutely everyone everywher so it's no big deal. come on man

just watched a star trek episode about a planet that relied so heavily on it's computer system that they all forgot the basics of their own knowledge. and that allowed them to miss the fact that they were being posioned with radiation and nearly ending their civilization. because they couldn't use their own knowledge to figure things out. i bring this up for no reason in particular
