Severance is a cool show. Because, like. What if you knew nothing. No context. No idea who you are. No history. And, of course, you are scared, but you can’t leave unless you get permission from someone— the person who put you here— someone who will never listen. Someone who makes all the decisions, who says “I’m a grown-up person and you’re not.” And you’re naive and lonely, but at least there’s other people in the same boat as you. Someone, just been there slightly longer, is trying to shield you, trying to protect you, taking responsibility and taking on punishment they “can handle and grow from.”
Like. Oh yeah. I recognize this one. Someone else dresses you. Someone else feeds you. Someone else, who's just like you, but they get everything. The little toys and the waffle party. Helly is desperate and suicidal, but she still has to go to school work. You have to do work that doesn't make sense, but you'll understand eventually. The meaningless, manufactured rivalry between departments. The rumors??? “they have larvae that eat them?” “I’m livestock grown for food” “I’m a bodybuilder who has loads of girlfriends, but you don’t know them they go to a different school?” Punishment in the form of apologizing over and over, having to use all the right words, until you are believed. Endless hallways. Scary authority figures. "Are you mad at me?" Religion being the only type of media you see, until you read some shitty book that changes your life. Confusing, sudden camping trips that are supposed to fix you. Condescension. The words "innie" and "outie" are brought up multiple times as infantilizing. Of course his innie's voice is higher pitched????
Everything you're forced to do -- and everything done to you -- is for your benefit, you're told... but not for the benefit of YOU-you. For the benefit of an alternate version of you, a version of you that you can't communicate with, a version of you that you don't even know really exists, but that everyone assures you is you and is, in fact, the version of you that matters more than and should be prioritized over YOU-you. You're not allowed to question this.
Yeah. Reminds me a lot of a kid's Hypothetical Adult Self.
Your future self will understand. Your future self will thank me. Your future self will want you to have done this. This is for your (future self's) own good.
Kid Me wasn't supposed to ask "If I'll want this when I'm older, why can't I just wait to do it until I'm older and want this?"
Wait, I can take this further.
The appeal of severance, at least as we've been shown it so far, is that subjects can have unpleasant experiences (childbirth, a tedious workday, a dental exam) already having happened, to skip directly to the "afterward" and have the unpleasant experience actually experienced by another, lesser version of yourself. Right?
Which is also how a lot of adults feel about children -- either their own retrospective child selves, or the children currently in their lives (whose lives must be structured to best serve their future adult selves). The purpose of childhood is to get unpleasant experiences over with so that the Future Adult Self (the self-that-matters) can have them already over with.
It's so telling that the boss at the door factory who interviews Dylan compares severance to circumcision -- a surgery commonly performed on infants, without medical necessity, based purely on the justification "They'll want/need it done as adults." Now, that's not necessarily true (the world is fully of happily uncircumcised adults), but even if if were, it would raise the inevitable question "Then why not wait until they want/need it as adults?" and the answer is "Because surgery is unpleasant and we assume adults don't want to go through it. The Future Adult Self (the self-that-matters) will want this surgery to already have happened, to have been experienced by the Lesser (childhood) Self."
And people even do this with learning skills! "I wish my parents had made me learn to play piano as a kid." Why can't you learn to play piano now? What's stopping you? What you mean is "I wish I were already good at piano-playing, I wish the awkward, frustrating, beginner stages of learning piano-playing had already been gotten over with by my Lesser Self who exists to get unpleasant things out of the way for Me, the Self Who Matters."
I just woke up from a dream that I got invited to go clubbing with my friends last minute while I was wrapping up a volunteer shift at a big community center so on my way to the club I stopped at a mall and grabbed a random dress but for some reason I couldn’t change at the mall so I went farther down the highway and stopped at a rest stop. it was pouring rain and on the way in i slipped and got covered in mud & i dropped my dress in a puddle and it got soaking wet. i keep a blow dryer in my car (i travel a lot) so i grabbed it and went to the bathroom and started blow drying the dress.
i was freezing cold and soaking wet so i took off my jeans and t shirt since no one else was there but a man walked in, in a full blue velvet tuxedo and when we saw each other in my state of undress we both apologized.
he said the men’s room was closed for maintenance and asked if i minded if he used the women’s and i said i didn’t.
he came back out of the stall and said he was tired and actually came in to rest for twenty minutes before he got back on the road and i said that was fine so he sat on the bench in the bathroom and closed his eyes and we were both silent for a few minutes and then he opened his eyes and asked where i was headed and i said i was meeting friends at some club and he said
“i don’t know why you’re going to the club when you could be going to Ravioli Night.”
i said, “to what?”
he sat up excitedly and began to describe what sounded like a black-tie ball, all centered on eating a multi-course meal of different ravioli dishes.
it was already ten at night so i assumed he’d just come from there. i said sorry i missed it but maybe next time.
he said, “it only happens every four years, but you’re in luck; the first course isn’t served until midnight.”
i said, “people gather at midnight to eat ravioli?”
he smirked mischievously and said, “until dawn.”
my dress was mostly dry so i pulled it on over my head and i said, “based on your tux, i think i’d be too underdressed.”
he said, “you can be my plus-one, and no one will ask.”
it seemed to me this man had some sort of major social authority in this mysterious, nocturnal world of ravioli.
i considered it, but i said, “sorry….my friends are waiting for me.”
he smiled sadly for a moment, stood up, and asked if i had a pen. i did in my purse. he wrote coordinates on my arm and said, “if you change your mind….”
then he left.
i walked outside and he was already gone. i got in my car and hesitated to turn the key, considering the thrill in my chest at the concept of so much ravioli.
then i woke up at that moment. i’ll never know…….would i have followed my heart?
this man had the energy of a vampire love interest but i’m 100% certain he was human with some sort of powerful sway in this dark world of ravioli
going to sleep with a single ravioli under my pillow tonight to try to summon this man and finish what we started
There is this sort of paradox in unhealthy relationships where the victim will waver on if what their partner is doing to them does or does not rise to the level of abuse. I want to say that it does not matter if what your partner is doing to you fits the dictionary or legal or your personal definition of ‘abuse’. If you are in a relationship where it has gotten to the point that you’re wondering if you’re being abused or not, it’s time to start thinking of an exit strategy and putting it into motion. So many people stay in terrible relationships because ‘it’s not abusive’, so many people are waiting for their partner to do something egregious and undeniably abusive before they give themself the permission to leave, when that moment happens, when they hit you or break your phone or scream at you all night before a job interview, the goalpost for what is unacceptable will shift further and further away. Ultimately, it does not matter if your toxic partner is or is not abusive in this moment, if they are doing/saying things that make you feel worse about yourself, feel embarrassed about yourself, feel unsafe, feel smothered, feel dependent on them, feel stupid, etc., it is time to go. It doesn’t matter if you’re actually the problem repeatedly setting them off, stop weighing that, maybe they WOULD be happier with another partner, all the more reason to get the fuck away from them and focus on yourself instead. If your partner is making your life worse, go. If your partner is making your life sooooo much better but there are just these little moments where they make you hate yourself, go. Stop qualifying and looking for a justification to go, just leave knowing life is too short to have misery inflicted on you, whether it is abuse or not.
To clarify, I’m not saying “Just leave, it’s easy!” I’m saying “You do not have to wait for permission or a justification to leave.”
I collaborated with the Human Artistry Project to make this strip alongside other web cartoonists to make the point that “Stealing isn’t Innovation” when it comes to A.I. usage. It seems to be doing numbers on instagram and elsewhere, so you may also read it here, tumblr.
May the discourse that ensues be long and unhelpful.

Fishpond Mosaic designed by artist Gary Drostle
@copperbadge I feel like this is something you would appreciate.
Oh, that is lovely. And I always appreciate an artist attribution too!
truly some people have no genre savviness whatsoever. A girl came back from the dead the other day and fresh out of the grave she laughed and laughed and lay down on the grass nearby to watch the sky, dirt still under her nails. I asked her if she’s sad about anything and she asked me why she should be. I asked her if she’s perhaps worried she’s a shadow of who she used to be and she said that if she is a shadow she is a joyous one, and anyway whoever she was she is her, now, and that’s enough. I inquired about revenge, about unfinished business, about what had filled her with the incessant need to claw her way out from beneath but she just said she’s here to live. I told her about ghosts, about zombies, tried to explain to her how her options lie between horror and tragedy but she just said if those are the stories meant for her then she’ll make another one. I said “isn’t it terribly lonely how in your triumph over death nobody was here to greet you?” and she just looked at me funny and said “what do you mean? The whole world was here, waiting”. Some people, I tell you.

The pathologization of anger needs to be talked about. What do you mean my therapist is telling me that there’s something “chemically wrong” with me because I am still angry about my mom DYING OF COVID.
of course I’m still angry? My mom and 1.3 million other Americans are dead and you want me to shoot sunshine out of my ass about it?
“But It’s been 3 years since she died, you have complex grief” yeah and she was on a ventilator for 11 days and she kept writing “I am scared” and “I don’t want to die” on a notepad over and over again. While you were still going out unmasked and unvaccinated and coughing all over each other, I was living a nightmare I couldn’t fucking wake up from. And every single day I’m reminded of it in the form of “haha wasn’t the pandemic such a wacky time haha” and “I’m not getting a booster you can’t make me 🤪 (nobody asked)” and “it’s not real they made the numbers up!!!”
“You’re not coping” Ok here’s the deal; I’ll stop feeling this anger when we have a national memorial (we don’t) or a cdc equipped to stop it from happening again (we don’t) or a population that takes a deadly disease seriously BEFORE it effects them personally (WE DON’T!)
until then, I’m pretty sure my anger is A COMPLETELY NORMAL HUMAN REACTION given the facts at hand
this cavefish has a concept of the passage of time that no other living animal could fathom
“Everyone has the same 24h” yeah right buddy say that to cavefish

“What if poor people abuse the system?”
The system intrinsically abuses poor people.
Hope this helps.
"What if poor people abuse the system?"
Rich people abuse the system far more and out of pure greed, not necessity or desperation so idrc about that
Give me less "being kind requires zero effort" and more "being kind is worth the effort it takes."

Sleep deprivation is such a common abuse tactic (especially in intimate partner scenarios) that I feel like is discounted or not recognized as a sign of an abusive relationship. Your partner doing shit like provoking arguments in the evening and not letting you go to sleep until you ‘finish it’, playing video games on full brightness and at full volume in the bedroom while you’re trying to sleep, repeatedly waking you with loud noises and having absolutely no consideration for your sleep schedule is a major red flag. It’s so easy to brush off in the moment because accidentally waking someone is one of those hazards of cohabitation that can be brushed aside and easily excused and so many abuse victims only begin to realize it was a calculated pattern of behavior after getting out and getting to sleep. Sleep deprivation is a torture method and a very effective method of abuse and control, lack of sleep puts you on edge and makes it harder for you to think. Abusers will often do this the night before a major event in their victim’s life like a job interview or important social gathering so the victim is not as prepared and/or cannot enjoy the event and it can have serious consequences on your academic, professional and social life.
Like I said, your partner occasionally waking you up is not necessarily a red flag on it’s own but if they’re doing it repeatedly, they refuse to attempt to adjust their behavior and/or they belittle you for being asleep at a reasonable hour, that is deliberate cruelty and blatant disregard for your health and wellbeing. If this is something occurring in your relationship and they are unwilling to listen or be more mindful, it’s time to reevaluate your relationship because you are incompatible at the very least. It’s one of those very small things that can and will indicate where the relationship is headed.
No one tells you that one day you will get older and look around and notice that 95% of ppl who own a dog should not own a dog
