Finn wasn’t a heavy drinker anymore, at least not like he'd been when he was younger. Between his hockey career and coaching, he tried to keep himself in check, if only to set some kind of decent example. He wasn't under any illusions about being a role model, but at least he wasn’t the worst person someone could look up to. However, that didn't mean he never indulged. Especially not after watching a brutal loss from one of his favorite teams.
One of the regular barflies (either feeling generous or already too far gone to realize what they were doing), had decided to buy shots for everyone lined up at the bar. Finn wasn’t about to argue with a free drink. These days he usually stuck to beer, so he suspected the tequila might hit harder than he remembered.
Still, muscle memory kicked in. He leaned forward and dipped his mouth to the rim of the glass, skipping using his hands entirely. He knocked the shot back like it was air. The burn that followed was sharp and familiar, and for a brief second, he almost missed it.
Setting the empty glass down, he eyed the remaining shot sitting on the counter. After a moment, Finn nudged it toward the person beside him with a small, easy smile. "I watched them pour it,” he said, voice casual. "No funny business or tampering, I promise. One's definitely enough for me tonight if you want it."
Sylvanna could technically have gone to the Den for some drinks, support her fellow dancers. But sometimes she just needed the cacophony of Skippy's, to drink a bunch of cheap liquor knowing all she'd taste in the morning is regret. There was something freeing in the act; a refusing to let her 30s be the end of her youthful escapades. So if she wanted to do something stupid, then stupid she would be.
Vanna had already had a couple shots when the regular bought shots for everyone. Normally, she would be happy to partake, where it not for the Long Island Iced Tea she was currently working on, needing a fruity drink to slow herself down. She wasn't hellbent on going blackout drunk - the last time that happened, she'd been lucky to wake up on the couch of one of her old friend's apartment.
So, she'd mostly watched everyone else at the bar taking their shots, eyeing the remaining shot but not wanting to take it just yet. At the stranger's voice, she smiles, and plucks up the shot glass, wildly swinging it about in an almost cavalier motion. "Well, if a fine thing like you insists." With a wink, she downs it with ease. "But just know that you handing that last shot over means that you have officially made me your problem."
"I'm a winter baby. January. Capricorn through and through and yet." PJ shrugged. It was just some people's personalities that didn't bode well with winter. PJ would much rather wear skimpy clothes and bury her feet on the sand than anything else in the world.
"I've lived in the south for a while and I went to Mexico on vacation and one day I'm going to retire there and watch animals run around me while sit on a rocking chair and... just not a thought in my head." She said wistfully before sighing and chuckling right after because she knew she sounded like the old lady she knew she was deep down.
"Sorry for interrupting your conversation. I try to never talk to myself because I can be kinda mean." PJ made a face, scrunching her nose before turning to the window in front of them and letting out a breath. "I have no idea what I'm going to buy my colleague. I don't know her at all." She mused.
"I am a March baby, and a Pisces." Eden said with a grin. Though she had been accused a time or two of being an Aries when she had only stated her birth month. She'd never delved into astrology beyond a fleeting interest in high school, but she was pretty certain she might have Aries in her chart somewhere.
"I think the furthest south I've ever been is probably Tennessee for a family vacation." Though that was when she was 12 and the only bit she had liked was going to Dollywood. "But that honestly sounds like an ideal way to retire, just... relaxing with no cares outside the animals around. Throw in a good book and I'd be sold."
"Please, interrupt away. The voices in my head are only so good for company, y'know?" Eden let out a laugh as she turned back to the window briefly. Eyebrows furrowing, she asked, "So, why buy her a gift? Is it some kind of office thing?"
Oh no. She somewhat recognized this person, although she couldn't place how. All Reese knew was that they were definitely cool, and thanks to a rock, this situation was about to turn very uncool. "No, I don't think so. But I just feel so safe with you for some reason. Anyways, I'm sure you hear this a lot, but I think I'm in love with you?"
Slylvanna blinks for several seconds. As if by blinking, she could unhear what she just heard. Never mind the fact that the woman in front of her was a veritable stranger at present. Unless she was a stalker, which Vanna doubted, or a regular at The Den that she had never noticed. "You... I'm sorry, what?" She took a step back, even as her head bobbed forward in utter confusion. "Look, I'm flattered, I really am. You're quite the cutie, but... I don't know you? You don't know me?"
SABINE READILY ACCEPTED THE WIPES, pulling one from the pack. ❛ Thanks, babe. ❜ She dabbed at the stain, breathing an internal sigh of relief when it began to lift from the dark suede fabric. Eden had grown to be a close friend since her return to Blythe Cove, her book club having helped ground her in the first few months of running the vineyard on her own. She had been floundering, but the quiet reassurance of routine, of having a circle of familiar voices, had been just what she needed.
❛ Any help is much appreciated. ❜ Up until that moment, she had all but deemed the jacket a lost cause. ❛ This is why I love walking through the vineyard. Rows and rows of vines and bushes, and there’s not a tree in sight. ❜ It was her fault, really; she decided to cut through the park and had become public enemy number one. That would be the last time she walked under trees wearing something she cared about. ❛ I hope your day is going better? ❜
"Anytime, hon." The nickname falls easily from Eden's lips as she puts the wet naps away. The book club had become like a surrogate family for her since she started it seven years ago. Depending on how the month was going, sometimes it was the only highlight. There was a kinship there, each of them being in need of some kind of connection, of routine.
"Mm, the vineyard is gorgeous. Remind me to stop by when spring comes." She could almost imagine the rows and rows of green, interrupted only by workers or Sabine herself. Flagging down a bartender, Eden ordered a drink for herself. She let the strong liquor flow down her throat for a moment before she spoke. "Oh, do not get me started. Or do, whichever you prefer. It has been that kind of day."

THEO WOUND HIS ARMS AROUND HER WAIST, kissing her back. ❛ Missed you too. ❜ There were few things he enjoyed more than coming home to her; his smile mirrored hers, warm and unguarded, his eyes filled with quiet adoration. ❛ Although, for the record— ❜ he glanced about the room, the faint jingling backdrop of whatever Christmas track she queued up, ❛ — I leave you alone for two hours, and you turn the house into a holiday postcard. ❜
His thumb swept a line at her hip as he took in the warm glow. ❛ You won’t believe what someone tried to sell me today. ❜ It took a lot to surprise Theo when it came to the shop. He kept up with the industry pages, checked in with his stockists every morning for new records, watched release calendars like clockwork. Rarely did anything slip past him.
However, there was one item he'd hunted for over seven years. First with an over-confident certainty that he would track it down easily, and later with a quieter stubborn hope he kept to himself. An elusive album he wanted not for the shop, but for her.
Eden pretended to act shocked, glancing at their surroundings briefly. "I'll have you know it took more than two hours to turn the house into a home worthy of a Hallmark Christmas special." She couldn't quite state the time off the top of her head, though. She'd done the decorating in increments, wanting to see how long before Theo noticed. "You better show some appreciation, mister, or I'll turn Golden Hour into a winter wonderland."
The threat was light, she didn't have it in her to do anything to the records store. It was all his; in her eyes, it was very much his needed proof of independence from his family. Her eyebrows furrowed briefly in confusion. "Mm, I'm guessing some long lost record worth its weight in gold." She paused for a moment before frowning slightly. "Or was it that one guy trying to sell you his Kidz Bop Karaoke vinyl again? Because that's what everyone really wants."
As much as James despised shopping, he knew there wasn't much time before Christmas and well, so far he hadn't gotten any gifts for anyone yet. Deciding that today, he would shop for his parents and then go from there. Though there was also an excitement there, the fact this would be his first Christmas home in years. What he wasn't prepared for was the cold weather.
"I'm with you on that one." James laugh as he heard the other's comment about winter. So unprepared for it, he had yet to buy himself a new winter jacket, hoping that his layers of shirts and a flannel would be enough to fight the chill away. Which so far, it wasn't. "I'm beyond ready for it to be summer again." He added after a moment, shrugging his shoulders some, his lips quirking up into an amused smile.
Eden had always been a bit of a perfectionist when it came to Christmas shopping. She had a list of people to shop for, a solid idea in terms of preferences. And yet, every year, she found herself floundering for more. An incessant need to outdo the previous year. A quest that no one had made her accept.
"Are you sure? The five layers of flannel seem to say otherwise." She couldn't stop the tease if she tried, a grin on her face accompanying it. There was also a nagging worry, but she didn't voice it just then. A stranger's business was not her own unless she was deliberately brought into it. "On that we're agreed. I'd happily trade the "magic of winter" for the magic of a warm summer night."
she had always enjoyed reading growing up , even if she'd also spent most of her time drawing and painting . it had so often involved drawing her imaginings of characters and scenes from books she read . and while she was in college she'd slowed down so much with her reading , and joining the book club had been a way to get back into it . and she loves getting to share thoughts and hear others' thoughts through it . ❛ yes , i do wish that it didn't get so cold . snow is so pretty until you spend too much time in it or having to drive in it . ❜ she would love to have snow during warm weather . and for it to be easier to drive in . ❛ i do love a good retail therapy day . even the days where it's just browsing . ❜
Eden smiled warmly as she turned back to the window, looking over the display once more. She couldn't help but hug her coat to herself a little bit more as a light breeze moved through the street. "Trying to drive even through a light flurry is not for the faint of heart. It's like everyone forgets how to drive because a single snowflake hit the ground." And the times she'd been caught in rush hour traffic which was already filled with idiots was... an adventure she wouldn't wish on her worst enemy. "I was wanting to get gifts for the club members. I wanna show how much I appreciate you guys sticking with me."
Standing at the bonfire and letting the flames warm her, a small smooth rock in her hands, Reese looked around her as if to make sure no one was within earshot while she mumbled quietly to herself. "Stone of half-truth.... okay." She could sense the irony in feeling like her entire life was a half-truth, but this seemed to be indicating something a lot less dire. Sure. No problem. Before she could lose her nerve, she walked up to the first person she saw, tapping them on the shoulder and giving them a somber expression. "Listen, I'm glad you're here. I have something to tell you."
Much as Sylvanna liked the Solstice fire because it was just one big party for the whole town, she hated the season it fell in. At the moment, she was standing in front of the fire, arms crossed in an effort to keep the wind from crawling under her coat, trying to will the flames to unthaw her toes. She was about to give up and finally go get some spiced cocoa when she felt a tap on her shoulder. "Hi, um... I'm sorry, do I know you?"

Originally born in Savannah, Georgia, Sylvanna and her elder sibling were moved to Palmetto, Florida when Sylvanna was 3. Raised in a small home, it wasn't until her elder sibling hit high school that Sylvanna's parents moved into a larger home. That larger home served as the backdrop for her father's affair with the boys basketball assistant coach. In the resulting divorce, Sylvanna and her elder sibling were kept with their mother, while their younger sibling moved with their father back to Savannah.
After graduating high school, Sylvanna moved out of her mother's house, and eventually began a career in modeling. She met her ex through her modeling career. The two dated for many years until Sylvanna discovered their own affair. Heartbroken, she moved in with her father and step-dad in Savannah, where she eventually stumbled upon a burlesque club. She fell in love with the club, and considered the people that worked there a second family.
After taking up a job at the club for a few years, she and one of her fellow dancers started a road trip up the East Coast, planning to settle in NYC. Blythe Cove served as a stop along the way, and Sylvanna decided to plant roots in Blythe instead, finding a peace in the town she'd never really known. She started a job in The Siren's Den, bought a little cottage, and has been more than content ever since.

character: katherine cross
Katherine came to Eden's house with offerings - dessert from the bakery and a bottle of wine from the winery. The benefits of having a marketing-partner in Sabine Delmare meant that there was always the perfect wine to pair with the dessert she brought to her friend's house. "I bought french macaroons and chocolate crossaints," she explained, as she stepped inside the woman's home. "You'll have to tell me if you like them since I made them myself." She wasn't allowed to actually sell what she baked, but she did enjoy baking and on the day that the bakery was closed, Katherine would spend her morning there, baking for herself and enjoying the quiet moments in her bakery. Only a few people knew that Katherine enjoyed baking herself, most thought that she stepped in to buy the bakery because it was a town-favorite and no one wanted it to go to someone who would try to change its charm.
Though, she wasn't sure if anyone expected the eldest Cross daughter to expand the bakery into a dispensary. "Right - there's also - the tiny cookie sandwiches have THC in them, so only eat a couple, but I thought you would be a good taste and mood tester. You and Theo," she suggested. She was the one who would blend the dispensary side with the bakery side, experimenting and trying to make delicious desserts with mood-altering effects.
The cookies were cutely wrapped and had a little sticker with a warning to only eat one or two in a few hours and to wait for the effects. No one liked to green out, no matter how delicious the cookies were.
"My father ate one on my way out of the house." She lived with her parents and had since her son died. "So, I have my phone on silent. I may have to get a hotel tonight just in case he gets upset. I, selfishly, want nothing to do with him right now. He has a list of three men he wants me to go on a date with in the next three weeks. Can you imagine?"
Though Eden knew that Kick wouldn't turn up empty handed - she never had - she still had managed to do some kind of set up. Empty wine glasses, a selection of empty trays and a few with some cookies and rice krispie treats. And, for the moment, no sight of her husband, with his unending appetite for sweets. "Ooh, I love chocolate croissants. Please tell me they're extra gooey." Eden was more than happy to offer up her arms to take off some of the load as Kick walked in, already nodding her head in the direction of the parlor. "Come on, we can sit in here. I hope you don't mind, but I set up some cookies and rice krispie treats. Never too many sweets."
It was almost kind of funny, the friendship that had sprung up between the two women. While Eden had clawed her way to where she was, reliant on her wits entirely, Kick was more akin to Theo, being born into the life of privilege. Hell, sometimes Eden was certain that her friend was more the type that Sir Arthur Gray had hoped his son would marry. It had caused a petty, little thrill somewhere in her head that Theo was her husband, that she had the utmost privilege of driving the old British man even more insane than he already was. "If you'd told me that you got THC cookies, I would have stocked up. Munchies are no joke." Though she couldn't wait for her husband to get home so they could try them. "I promise I'll have a full report next time we see each other."
At the mention of Kick's father, Eden frowned. A frown that turned into a snort at the mention of a hotel. "Don't be silly, Kick. You can stay here, for as long as you like. There's plenty of spare rooms, and I know Theo won't mind. And also, we both know that your father is a dingbat. Three men? Is he trying to give my father-in-law a run for his money?"
"Tell me about it. I wasn't made for this fucking weather." When PJ heard the words, she couldn't help but wholeheartedly agreed, even before knowing who she was talking to, because she hated the cold and winter. "If I could, I would live somewhere where is summer all year long. Believe me, I've considered this." She chuckled while rummaging inside her bag for her phone. She had stepped out in the middle of the work day because it was Marissa's — on accounting — birthday, and she had totally forgotten to get her something.
PJ finally looked up with her phone in hand and chuckled, "Sorry. I don't know if you were talking to me but I take any opportunity to bad mouth winter."
"Neither am I. My parents blame it on me being a spring baby." But she swore that if she were a winter baby, she would still feel the same way. The magic of winter in childhood was quick to wilt away when adolescence began to take hold. "Oh, I've thought about it, too. Even weighed the pros and cons of different states in the South. But I just don't have it in me to move so far from my parents." Moving out of the state of PA itself had been a journey, and she'd barely done that.
Eden looked over with a warm grin, waving a hand. "I was only talking to myself, so it's nice to not hear myself reply for a change."

where: eden + theo's house
theo kept the record store open late on book club nights, a conscious effort to stay out of his wife’s way. the club was eden’s, and she hardly needed him hanging around, hindering her pursuits.
instead, he used the extra hours for inventory. the store was his passion project, and while he hardly cared which artists sold more than others, he had a running log of requests to fulfill. first, some customers felt he was too stuck in the past, so he ordered straight from the billboard top 100 list. then, there was concern that he didn’t represent all types of music, which he answered by adding a selection of psychedelic meditation records.
he arrived home as the club was wrapping up, listening from the other room as someone debated celeste's motivations for staying with perry for so long. eventually the voices tapered off, leaving the house in comfortable silence. ❛ another success? ❜ theo asked, shoulder resting against the doorway.
While Eden often preferred to host the book club outside of her home, sometimes it was nice to have voices other than hers and Theo's within. It gave her an excuse to go all out, with warm lights, cozy blankets, treats from Baked on the Beach, and an array of drink options. Though she sometimes wished that her husband would join in, even if only for want of his company.
It was a comfort, though, that he had his own passion project. His love for music and opening of Golden Hour had led to an abundance of records tucked away. So, she'd had a wide array of vinyls to pick from during the club meeting. For the moment, she had a compilation of Christmas songs playing as she re-folded blankets. Though she stopped the moment she heard Theo's voice, turning with a bright smile to face her husband.
"Yeah, it was great. I'm always glad to see my club members." They'd all become such dear friends to her, and it was always a fun time filled with laughter when she had them all around. Still, she crossed the room in order to loop her arms around Theo's neck so that she could better pull him into a kiss. "I missed you."
the young artist has always liked winter . she got one coat a few years ago and then discovered it's the same one all the connecticut soccer moms had bought that year when she'd been there for a gallery for school . and while she doesn't need anything , sometimes window shopping can be fun . a little bit moreso when she spots people she knows .
she smiles when she realises her book club leader has stopped in front of the same shop . ❛ i always look forward to the contrast in the snow by the sea . it's always so pretty . ❜
Eden had to giggle when she looked in the direction of the familiar voice. Nyla was the youngest member of the club, and arguably the sweetest. "Now that I honestly can't argue with. I just wish it wasn't so cold." If she could have it her way, it would be possible for it to snow and be warm. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had never agreed with that logic. "Are you also trying to fill your day with some retail therapy?"
