Character: Wisteria Grey
"Okay so ..." she pointed to the flyer that the event coordinators had put up around town in the days and weeks leading up to the party. "In my defense, I may have gotten confused between Halloween and New Year's because they're so close together, so I originally thought hey, new year's eve, ring in the new year and make sure last year's bad stuff doesn't follow you by wearing a costume. And then I thought, Wizard, why would you ever wear a costume to a New Year's Eve event, even if that's what it said on the flyer."
It didn't say that anywhere on the flyer. She had read party and her brain had filled in the information with details she liked and ignored what it had written. Standard Wisteria.
Wizard - the name her friends and uncle called her for her ability to get herself into a metric shit ton of trouble and get herself out normally by making things worse ... just like casting fireball in a closed room while having fire resistance. Good for her. Bad for those around her.
"So, so - so - so..." she cleared her throat and rocked back on her heels. She had a stickied name-tag to the front of her wrinkled blouse that she probably picked up off the pile of clean clothes that sat on the chair in the corner of her room (the same chair full of clothes that sometimes looked like a creepy old man when it was dark). She pointed to her name badge. Al O'Vera.
"I had to trick the old year somehow. Now all the bad things can't follow me because it doesn't know my name."

"All right -- and we're done." Aris said, as he slung his arm around James' shoulders without so much of a hey, how are you man - it's been a while because James wouldn't remember how long it had been and frankly, Aris didn't care. He'd known the man before he went into the military. Knew him in the military. Now knew him afterwards. Three versions of James all known by the disreputable Aristotle.
For a man named after a well-known philosopher, he spoke like he had a mouthful of marbles and had the off-kilter balance of a man who had taken too many hits to the head and hadn't ever learned when to stay down.
(He kindly won't point out that he had managed to make it to 40 before his doctors warned him of the potential dangers of repeated concussions, James didn't make it to 30 before his brain went the way of swiss cheese.)
"You look like you could do with some air, bud," he said easy-going and light, as though he wasn't setting his grip with the intention that James would follow him out into the chill December air. "C'mon, hand to god, I'll make sure you're back inside for someone to kiss ya at midnight. Not me. I don't do charity on New Year's Eve. Bad luck."

He had it on record in multiple places that he was not, under any circumstances, going to go to the New Year's Eve event. He had good reasons.
one. He had very few times that he closed the gym for deep cleaning and repairs. He wanted to dedicate the time that he had to taking care of it.
two. Why would anyone want him at the damn party? He wasn't high on the list of most charming people or people we'd like to invite to a townwide party... hell, he wouldn't even get an honorable mention for most likely to spike the punch (because he wasn't 17 anymore, and that kind of shit shouldn't have happened back then and it sure as hell wasn't going to happen now ... probably.)
All that to say that Aristotle Augustine was not going to go to the party.
He didn't walk as much as he skulked. If he could get in, say what few hellos he felt like saying, and then dip - he'd be a happy man.
But God didn't care if he was happy. He did care if he was suffering since ... that was the whole point. Be the ant. Wait your turn for the magnifying glass. God was laughing at him, Aris knew, because there was no such thing as skulking when he had people who were determined to bring him into social things.
"Shut up."
Came his immediate reply when he saw them. "Don't you say another word. I didn't want to be here. One silly word or expression of gratitude, and I'm out. I will leave, and you will be here ---" he gestured to the party. "Doing fuck knows what without me."

2005 Jeep wrangler sport - the most day to day vehicle. He has a thing against too new cars, and he'd rather fix up the ones that he likes and considers to be dependable. the jeep isn't his favorite vehicle (that's the truck), nor does it go fast (that's the motorcycle), but it does what it needs to do.
ducati panigale V4 r - when there isn't snow on the ground or it's not raining (insert laughter here), he enjoys taking mountain roads just fast enough to be stupid. It's an old habit he's never outgrown. this is not street legal as he added the racing exhaust.
1968 chevy truck - nicknamed "the kid", this truck was his best friend's dream truck and one that he never got to have. when Aris retired from the military, he found the truck and dedicated time to restoring it. He doesn't drive it often, as it's a classic, but when it's a nice summer day and he's stuck in his head - he'll take it on a drive and just talk to his old friend like he's still there.
Wisteria's poor attempt at trying to take the sting out of her parents' death by attributing names connected to a fire to the two animals that she gives a lot of her love to.
Ash, the black maine coon, is an affectionate 3 year old black void who enjoys darting out of shadows and demanding attention. He is most often seen wandering through the bed and breakfast, standing guard.
Smoke, the cream greyhound is a 4 year old scaredy-cat. Where Wisteria is, Smoke is. She doesn't like being left alone for any length of time, and there are certain rooms in the bed & breakfast that she refuses to go into.

Reputation around Finchwood
The Willows has always been a strange little light within Finchwood, though - it's certainly not little and had been designed by a madman, at least, that's the lore around Benedict Willow. Some say Benedict was trying to outrun a curse or to find immortality by never stopping construction in the home. He had delighted in travels around the world, bringing home with him strange and mysterious things.
Wisteria, Benedict's many-times great-granddaughter has renovated the museum into a bed & breakfast with six rooms open for guests to rest in and an additional eight rooms that still hold the charm and allure of the museum and are meant for viewing and exploration only. The greenhouse in the back of the strange estate is a place of peace and refuge from the strange and macabre, but lurking may be a skeleton or taxidermied animal that has escaped its normal room. Wisteria serves breakfast and dinner - and there's always one room (not of the rented out six) that is kept just in case a friend or stranger needs a place to stay.
Yes, there's rumors that this place is haunted. Yes, kids like to dare each other to try and sneak onto the property. Yes, Wisteria has a strange reputation.

When Rooster decided he was going to open a boxing club, there was a public outcry when he put in an offer for the local warehouse that was situated across the street from a Catholic church. There was a fear that the club would bring the dangerous and violent to good, god-fearing people but Rooster, stubborn that he was, dug his heels in.
Aristotle bought the club after he retired from the military, though Rooster has stayed on as an adviser. He transformed the club into a 501c3 with a focus on education, community, youth development and reduce delinquency. The club is a safe-haven for kids who have hard home lives and don't have anywhere to go, and there's a scholarship program for any child that can't afford classes. It's not uncommon to see Aristotle waive a fee if it means that a kid can keep consistency and community.

âThere are certain injustices in this life youâve got to do something about. You canât just say that you canât fight it, or itâs too much trouble, or that you donât have the time or the effort, or that you canât win. Forget all that. Fight them all!â â Harlan Ellison
name: Aristotle Scott Augustine
nickname: Aris / Coach
age: 40
date of birth: 21 December 1985
relationship status: single
animal companions: none (yet)
personality:
he'll be the first to tell you that he's too much like his father and not enough like his mother. The struggle for Aristotle is his mother named him after a philosopher in hopes it would temper the devil he was born with, and in reality, when people began calling him Aris - she realized too late that she also named him after chaos. he's tried over the years to temper the rage that his father instilled in him and to be a better man. So, he's patient - but when he's pushed too far, he's every inch the man his father raised him to be.
brief bio:
Life in the Augustine house was a rotating door of empty liquor bottles and police visits. His mother worked nights dancing at a gentleman's club while his father drifted between barstools and jail cells. Aristotle grew up cooking his own meals, watching his motherâs tired, beaten body move through the apartment, and he grew used to how she'd stare at him and then look away - saying that he had his father's devil eyes.
When his father was home, violence filled the gaps. Aristotle learned early that if he didnât step between his father and mother, no one would. She only held him after he protected her. She only said she loved him after he was bleeding... but it didn't matter. He'd earn her love one way or another. So, he stood between her and his father again and again. Each time the price was a black eye, cracked ribs, or worse. He developed a temper, not the loud, flailing kind, but the quiet, coiled, dangerous kind that lived under his skin like a trapped animal. A temper that, pushed hard enough, would eventually roar to the surface.
He was young when his mother packed up her things one day and left without saying goodbye. It meant that for the next few years, he was largely left alone unless his father came home. At sixteen, during one of his father's drug/alcohol fueled violent benders, Aristotle finally snapped. Aristotle didnât even remember the start of the fight; he remembered only fists, yelling, a shattered table, his neighbor screaming, and waking up in a hospital bed with a broken jaw and ribs wrapped tight. That beating finally forced the state to step in and they called Aristotle's paternal grandfather.
Aristotle's grandfather agreed to take them in, but only under one condition: Aristotle was out the day he turned eighteen. Everyone expected him to fight the ultimatum. Instead, he nodded, swallowed the last of his pride, and made a different plan.
He graduated early, got his grandfather's permission, and enlisted in the Army at seventeen. He wanted out, and the army didnât care where he came from as long as he could survive what they threw at him. Boot camp was easy, almost comfortable. Pain made sense there. Rules too. The Army gave him an outlet for the fury heâd spent his childhood swallowing, and it gave him order where there had never been any. He chose Cavalry Scout as his MOS, partly because he was good at going quiet and partly because his anger was easier to manage when focused. When he couldn't swallow the fury, he would box. He learned to fight for sport which was much different than fighting for survival.
He embraced the misery, the grit, the endless grind of training. He had a gift for stillness, patience, and violence delivered with surgical precision. In the Army, no one cared about the kid he used to be. They cared that he hit his mark and didnât crack under pressure. He did twenty years, from seventeen to thirty-seven, rising to CW4. He built a reputation for being unshakeable, disciplined, and terrifying when pushed. His temper was still there, but heâd learned how to bury it under professionalism until the moment he needed it.
When he retired, he stepped out of the only structure heâd ever known and into a civilian world that felt too soft, too slow, too unguarded. His father had drunk himself into the grave years earlier. His mother had remarried and built a life she didnât invite him into. He even had a little brother.
He didn't know what hurt worse, the fact that he had an entire family that he wasn't welcome to be part of, or the fact that his mother had so easily left him behind.
When he came home, he took over the Church Street Boxing Club - one of Finchwood's rundown, old businesses that had seen better days. Painstakingly, he rebuilt and renovated it until it became a place for people had nowhere to go and needed a place to belong. Heâs established it as a non-profit. It means heâll never be rich but it doesnât matter to him. What matters is preventing more kids from growing up like he did.
