The first solo showcase of the talented Toronto based artist Anna Pantcheva took place in 2013. Mystical and figurative meet elegance is how I would describe her work. Very fluid yet structured. A dazzling display of levels and layers. Anna had a second solo exhibition at Walnut earlier this year.

Jean-Sébastien Denis is an artist from Montreal whose work has been showcased all around North America. A pleasure for us to exhibit. The Sky is Falling is a series of mixed media abstract landscape paintings that explore the tenuous line between beauty and destruction, demonstrating the impossibility of untangling the narrative around climate change and global warming. As in the tradition of the sublime in art, the work imbues the viewer with a sense of pleasurable terror while interpreting the archetypal theme of “The Great Flood” experienced in our contemporary reality as extreme weather and super-storms.

Walnut Contemporary is pleased to present Modular, a solo exhibition of Toronto-based painter James Olley. Modular will be on
view from October 11 to November 02, 2013.
The opening reception will be held on Friday October 11, from 6 to 9 pm.
Olley’s works are grounded in representation and depict invented spaces with altering perspectives, surprising shifts in scale and unorthodox sight lines. Though his work explores representation, it also osculates between figuration and abstractions invoking a sense of motion and tension, as the spaces are in a constant state of flux. For Olley, the canvas operates as an arena to house these two distinct modes of expression, depicting co-habited environments where each language competes for their dominance; overlapping and spilling into the other. Much of Olley’s work shares this common interest through the fluidity and motion of paint, emulsifying and recording his body’s engagement with the materials.
Olley received his MFA from the University of Waterloo in 2008 after completing his BFA at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2004. Since graduating, Olley has had a number of solo shows across Canada and abroad: Angell Gallery, Toronto: Galerie Trois Points, Montreal; Kasia Kay Art Projects, Chicago; Incident Report, Hudson, New York; Dundee Contemporary Arts, Dundee, Scotland; Galerie Weissraum, Kyoto, Japan; and Groenhazengracht 1, Leiden, Netherlands. Olley’s work belongs to private collections such as Colart Collection Montreal and he has been awarded the Emerging Artist Grant (Toronto Arts Council & Ontario Arts Council) and Exhibition Assistance Grants from the OAC, in addition to the Vermont Studio Center Residency. His work has been profiled at contemporary art fairs, including Pulse New York, Miami, and Next Chicago.
Olley currently lives in Toronto, Canada where he works as a painter and Assistant Professor in the Fine Arts Department at OCAD University teaching Painting and Drawing.
