And also idk what's the perception foreigners have but nowadays a good BIG part of portuguese people do not kiss the ground he walks on like at all. If you read what a lot of portuguese people are saying about him as a player, captain and person the past weeks (years, really) you'd be surprised. It's one thing to be grateful, it's another thing to not see what's right in front of us. No player is above the team, not even him and I honestly dgaf if people forget Portugal exists when he retires, it would in fact be a breath of fresh air for us, fans, and for the other players who wouldn't have to deal with this shitshow every game. And Portugal will still be here after he retires and we'll still have good players who may or may not help us win trophies. Did ronaldo carry this country for years? He did and, again, I recognize that. But what he did 15 years ago has nothing to do with the world cup being played in 2026, he is just another player and if he's not good enough he shouldn't be playing. And he's not even close to being good enough right now but his big ego keeps him from taking a step back and self reflecting a bit and think wow yeah maybe I should step aside and let the younger guys have a chance to show themselves
