Dang, I kinda wish when I became an adult people gave me the tools of my trade and a house. Would have made the transition to adulthood a lot smoother.
asdfg you're absolutely correct!! Coran WAS supposed to break up with her but he couldn't. So I was like "Okay. I'm integrating this. Minthara said no break up, he's Minthara's now." And I really pushed myself to be creative with how they'd work together lol
that is incredible lol. i looked in the notes and it turns out the reddit OP here didn't even want to date minthara but they didn't get any option to just be friends with her so she really did hold them hostage 😭

Some assorted prayers to Lolth from ch. 14 of The Rose of Sarifal. The drow in this novel have a unique form of Lolth worship, believing that Chauntea (the Earthmother) will help them to purify Lolth of her demonic corruption and restore the goddess to her pre-fall form of Araushnee.
“Of all insects, she is the most industrious, the thriftiest, and the most useful, a model for all mothers at their looms, and fathers at their nets in the dark water. All storytellers owe a debt to her, all musicians and artists, and all kings and queens who strive to weave a pattern in the world’s fabric. Cruelly abandoned and cast into the Abyss, despised by Corellon Larethian, her children’s father, still she was able to redeem herself, because of the thousand female virtues that we celebrate in our lives.”
“Soon she will come back,” the elf maidens chanted. “The Earthmother has permitted it. She will guide her to her rightful place among the Seldarine, just as she raised Malar the Beastlord out of the Abyss.”
“Araushnee,” she repeated. “They have tried and failed, tried and failed here for months. The guardian has worn through an entire circuit of the lady’s rituals, over and over. But it was [Chauntea’s] idea—she could entice her with the rarest blood in Faerûn, and Araushnee would answer to the smell of it, as if she were some predatory creature and not a goddess or a queen.”
“Her spider’s nature is the curse Corellon laid on her. She yearns to cast it away, reject it and be free. When we speak of our desire to live again on the surface in the forest of Winterglen, simple wood elves like our ancestors, it is so we also can share in a goddess’s aspiration, and be more than creatures fighting in a hole.”
“It is so easy to fall back into old habits,” said the girl. How beautiful her voice was—he had not noticed until now. “Creatures in a hole, hiding and fighting. But if we are to walk among the moon and stars, surely we must change. Come back to what we were, long ago, in the simple time.” (The Rose of Sarifal, ch. 18)
Amaka, a Moonshae Isles drow priestess, explaining her specific drow settlement’s plot to cleanse Lolth of her demonic nature and return her to her earlier form of Araushnee. They aimed to accomplish this with Chauntea’s help, combined with the blood sacrifice of a leShay princess.
What made you decide to have Coranzan romance Minthara? I'm intrigued because they seem so different.
Aaa! Thank you for the question! 💖 I love to yap about Coranthara! So thank you so much for your kindness and enabling me!
You're right, they're quite different. But they're also not. Which is why I think they're so fun.
TLDR: They're both victims of Menzoberranzan's Lolth cult and Coranzan has empathy for her on this. She's on the beginning of a long journey to discover who she is after Lolth. Despite their differences, he takes a lot of joy in meeting the energy of someone as ambitious, high-charged, and charismatic as him. Underneath them both is the desire to find someone they can figure out how to love another without the cult breathing down your neck.
Part of explaining this leans on my interpretation that Minthara isn't a typical Lolthite, even if she sounds rather typical on first glance. For someone who was a Baenre and steeped into the worst population of Menzoberranzan, she does a fair amount of questioning the way she was raised, offers other an extraordinary amount of trust, and is surprisingly forgiving. She loves hard and recklessly (her Priestess of Vandree story, instantly cuddling and sleeping next to Tav, etc). And she does it knowing it's extremely difficult:
"Loving another is not soft, wizard. It is one of the hardest things a person can do."
To go on about how she's breaking the norms, she resents her mother's brutal ways, has empathy for the way the woman she hated the most was raised in trauma by her own mother, and understands that the Lolthite way of life is the pathway to becoming a corpse in the name of a god that doesn't care about you. Most Lolthites wouldn't blink at this.
I see Minthara as an ex-Lolthite drow woman on the cusp of major change but we didn't get to see that come to fruition over the course of her story.
Coranzan was also a Menzoberanyr commoner, and while he wasn't perpetuating things quite to the level Minthara was, he was part of Keptolo's scheme to draw men to Lolth's side on a large scale, making him another cog in the system perpetuating the abuse cycle against his own people and his own gender in Lolth's name. It took a similar realization that these gods will leave you for dead despite having made their schemes your life's goal.
Coranzan was given the opportunity to redeem himself by turning to Eilistraee and strongly believes that others should be given that chance as well, Eilistraeen or not. And naturally when Minthara joins and he understands she's rejected Lolth, he takes it as his duty to help her survive her new life as an exile. He sticks to her side, draws her into the group so she's not isolated, and generally won't leave her be as drow often flounder on their own, becoming isolated or hated by surface folk.
He demonstrates a dedication to supporting her and protecting her rather than preaching to her, and I think that strengthens his case. His dedication is returned by their own - their differences over what to do with the Absolute is met with a mutual understanding on the enemy at hand and a stubborn care for one another.
Over the course of staying close to her, he sees Minthara as an incredibly charismatic and witty personality with a sense of humor that can destroy him. Being an eloquence bard himself, he matches her sense of humor and enjoys a back-and-forth with her he hasn't experienced in a very long time. They enjoy trading barbs back and forth, brutally eviscerating each other, and telling jokes that makes the rest of the camp cringe hard.
Where Coranzan and Minthara weren't likely to work together was over the fact that they would struggle to reveal their hearts to each other, despite their feelings - they've both had their hearts hurt for loving others and they are Menzoberranyr drow, of course - it's not easy for them.
However, in this case, they have the tadpole to communicate their feelings and get past their walls and facades. Minthara and he share a rare moment of vulnerability that would take decades of trust otherwise. She initiates this by seeking out his thoughts, apologizing, and then seeking permission to see his thoughts. Not many drow women would ask for this - Eilistraeen or Lolthite. It's huge to him that she asks... but also that she wants to know his feelings - it's clear she values his thoughts and opinions, despite her tough exterior. And this is more than he gets from a lot of drow women.
This is already really long so I won't go further into it but Coranzan himself is also going on a journey to figure out who he is outside of Eilistraee's church as well and Minthara is pushing him to reconsider his ties to the church, even if he won't budge on his dedication to EIlistraee and her mission.
A descriptions of Moonshae Isles drow textiles and fashion from ch. 18 of The Rose of Sarifal:
Now he noticed how her shift was held together—by a brooch or a needle on her right shoulder. He did not remember seeing it before. And now he could see the sharp end of it protruding from the fine white linen cloth—finer, actually, than he had thought. This part of it wasn’t ripped or stained. Close to his mouth, the other end was fashioned in the shape of a spider, a beautiful ornament of silver chased with gold.

This month's patron request/reward was so cute I had to make it a full illustration 🤌🏻✨
Minthy using Gale as her personal manservant (or thinking that he should be on principle) is one of the funniest thoughts to me so I had to incorporate that
