chapter three: the seat beside you
in which: after a long day of filming with the triplets, a spontaneous late-night dinner happens that’s filled with laughter, chaos, and lots of old memories. when matt recalls a childhood story that isabelle doesn’t even remember, she starts to realize just how much he notices, and she can’t stop thinking about why he even remembered at all.

Late one night after filming, the four of you decided that none of you were ready to end the night yet.
Which usually meant one thing, and one thing only:
"I'm so hungry, I could eat a fuckin'- I don't even know, elephant," Chris announced, throwing himself onto the couch.
"You say that every day," Nick replied.
"Because I'm hungry every day ."
"That's not how being hungry works you big hungry shit."
Chris ignored him, already grabbing his phone.
Immediately, everyone started talking over each other.
"Because we go there every time."
You laughed quietly, watching the argument unfold.
"I'm fine with anything."
He shook his head, laughing softly.
Eventually, you ended up at a restaurant you'd all been to before.
It wasn't anything fancy.
Just somewhere comfortable.
Somewhere you could all sit for hours talking about nothing.
The second you walked in, Nick and Chris started arguing with each other about who was going to sit where.
"Chris you weren't even near the table."
"Honey that's not how that works at fucking all"
"Will you guys shut the fuck up? My god."
You shook your head, walking past them.
You weren't trying to avoid them.
You never felt like you had to.
It was just easier letting the three of them do their thing.
You slid into one side of the booth, setting your phone down beside you.
A few seconds later, Matt walked over.
There were still other seats open.
The seat across from you.
The other side of the booth.
He sat down right next to you.
Like it was the most normal thing in the world.
He looked over, confused.
"I don't know. You usually sit across."
You didn't have an answer.
The conversation moved on.
Nick was already telling some story that Chris kept interrupting.
Matt was laughing beside you.
And somehow, without either of you noticing...
Sitting next to each other had become the easiest thing in the world.
Halfway through dinner, the stories started.
The kind that always happened when all four of you were together.
Chris brought up something embarrassing Nick did years ago.
Nick immediately denied it.
"That literally never happened."
"Those are not the same thing."
"They are when I'm the one telling the story."
Then somehow, the conversation shifted into old memories.
Things you barely remembered.
"I still can't believe you did that," Nick said suddenly.
"You remember when we went to the lake?"
You thought for a second.
"You were trying to skip rocks."
Nick immediately started laughing.
"You were so confident too," Matt continued.
"And you were convinced you were better than all of us."
"You threw one rock and it bounced once."
"How do you remember that?"
He remembered because it was you.
You didn't know that though.
You just smiled, shaking your head.
"I can't believe you remember that."
Matt looked at you for a second.

v debriefs: gosh matt is such a cutie! ok that's all. i really hope you enjoyed, cus it's gonna get crazy soon (i have like seven chapters almost fully written so i might post two in a day)! also, i promise i did not forget about her journaling interest, THAT'S COMING BACK!!! i just didn't want to do it every chapter bcus it was too tedious and it felt awkward... but yea that's all!
