Queen spoilers: questions about the Cohort!
Hey Cassie! I loved qoaad! I’m just really confused on how this split between the shadowhunters works. Will the ones led by Alec not be able to use the silent brothers and the iron sisters anymore? Aren’t they really vital to Shadowhunter life? Thanks and I love your books! Can’t wait for tlh!

I was thinking now that the Cohort kicked out all the sane shadowhunters from Alicante and since the Iron Sisters and the Silent Brothers are on the side of Alec and the others and they are closing the doors of the City of Bones, how are Cohort people going to live ? and what is there purpose ?? They can’t have weapons without the Sisters and all the archives and healers are in the City of Bones. I mean other than getting drunk from lake Lyn what’s their point now ?? thank you
As both these questions demonstrate, Queen of Air and Darkness delivered a tremendous shakeup to the Shadowhunter world as we’ve known it. The Cohort has split off from the rest of Shadowhunter society. I’ll take a moment to clarify who has access to what.
The Shadowhunters outside Idris are led by Alec Lightwood as Consul. The Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters are allied with them, and have sealed the entrances to the Silent City that were in Idris. Since the Mortal Cup and the Mortal Sword are kept in the Silent City, the Shadowhunter diaspora has access to those items.
The Cohort has sealed themselves up inside Idris. They have the third Mortal Instrument—the Mirror, which is Lake Lyn itself. They do not have access to the Silent Brothers or Iron Sisters. They are isolated.
Which brings us to these two questions—yes, the Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters are very important to Shadowhunter life and culture! The loss of them is a huge loss to the Cohort, but one they were prepared to make in order to keep Idris. Was this a good idea? It sure doesn’t look like one, does it? But that may just be because the Cohort’s plans are mysterious. Which brings us to question two, what are the members of the Cohort DOING in Idris, with no healers, no new weapons, and no access to the outside world? (Besides drinking from Lake Lyn and hallucinating, which probably actually gets pretty dull after awhile.)
Obviously I can’t tell you exactly what the Cohort is up to, because that would be a massive spoiler from the books! But there are a couple things I can tell you:
You’ll find out a little bit more about what’s going on in Idris in The Lost World, cowritten by Kelly Link, which is one of the exclusive new stories in the print version of Ghosts of the Shadow Market.
The Cohort members are NOT SHADOWHUNTING. They have no new weapons. They have no healers. They have no access to demons! They have no intention of continuing to be Shadowhunters, at least not the way that we understand what Shadowhunters are. Whatever they are doing while hidden behind the wards, it is something very different than we’ve seen Shadowhunters do before. They’ve essentially turned their backs on their mandate from Raziel, which was to fight demons. (Hence the Silent Brothers and Iron Sisters siding against them!) They don’t care about demons anymore. They care more about power, and about an ideal of purity that is entirely abstract, created by them and for them to aspire to.
So what will they do? Obviously I can’t tell you specifics. But we can infer this much:
Whatever their plans are, they won’t be good for Downworlders, and they won’t be good for the other Shadowhunters, who they see as traitors.
They also won’t be good for Mundanes.
Won’t the Wicked Powers be FUN? With ThuleJ and the Cohort to contend with, not to mention a new villain…
