Vân đài loại ngữ 芸臺類語 - Sĩ quy 士規 (Rules and advices of being officials) - 51st chapter:

吳張溫以英才見罪，武侯曰：「清濁太明，善惡太分故也。」

Zhang Wen from Wu was convicted for his outstanding talent, Wuhou (Zhuge Liang) said: "He distinct between purity and turbidity, good and evil too clearly, (so he was convicted)"

嘗以武侯經歷合物，文皇勸勵精求治安，豈不欲扶君子逐小人？而二公之言，乃以太分善惡為人品之病，何也？

Now, (when I think) about the experiences of Wuhou in governing the country, and the encouragement for peace and order of Emperor Wen (Tang Taizong), did they not want to support the virtuous and drive out the wicked? Yet the words of these two gentlemen pointed out that too much distinction between good and evil was a flaw in human character, why is that?

蓋天地之間，陽一而陰二，善人少而不善人多。陰固不可化為陽，不善人亦不可盡變為善，大要使之各安其分, 斯可矣。

人之不仁，疾之已甚則亂。區分流品，著明愛惡，豈非已甚乎？

Between heaven and earth, there is one yang and two yin; good people are few, bad people are many. Yin cannot be transformed into yang, nor can all bad people be turned into good. The key is to let each be content with its place, that is enough.

When people's lack of benevolence is excessively hated, chaos ensues. To distinguish between different classes and clearly define likes and dislikes—is this not going too far?

Sanguozhi 三國志 - Zhang Wen's Biography:

《會稽典錄》曰：餘姚虞俊嘆曰：「張惠恕才多智少，華而不實，怨之所聚，有覆家之禍，吾見其兆矣。」諸葛亮聞俊憂溫，意未之信，及溫放黜，亮乃嘆俊之有先見。亮初聞溫敗，未知其故，思之數日，曰：「吾已得之矣，其人於清濁太明，善惡太分。」

The Kuaiji Dianlu records: Yu Jun of Yuyao sighed, "Zhang Huishu is talented but not wise, and flashy but not realistic. Judging from the growing resentment towards him, I foresee that he will meet his downfall one day." When Zhuge Liang heard of Jun’s concern for Wen, he did not believe it. But after Wen was dismissed, Liang praised Jun’s foresight. When Liang first heard of Wen’s defeat, he did not know the reason. After pondering for several days, he said, “I have figured it out. He was too clear when he made distinctions between integrity and corruption, and good and evil."

-Zhang Wen was a talent in Wu, Sun Quan sent him to Shu for a diplomatic mission, and people in Shu also praised him. (Rumors said that he became friends with Liang? not sure) Later, Sun Quan was unhappy with Zhang Wen for praising the Shu government, and jealous of his growing popularity. Zhang Wen recommended Ji Yan to serve in the Wu government. Ji Yan incurred much resentment from his colleagues when he came up with radical ideas to reform the bureaucracy.

(Jiu Tang shu 舊唐書, Biography of Du Fu)

甫於成都浣花里種竹植樹，結廬枕江，縱酒嘯詠，與田夫野老相狎，蕩無拘檢，嚴武過之，有時不冠，其傲誕如此。

Fu planted bamboo and trees in Huanhua Lane in Chengdu, built a thatched cottage by the river, and indulged in drinking and reciting poetry. He mingled with farmers and old men, living a life of unrestrained freedom, sometimes he would not wear his official hat (when meeting Yan Wu); such was his arrogance.

-In his time in Chengdu, he often visited places which worshipped Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, and wrote many poems about them. There are the most famous ones: 蜀相 (The Minister of Shu), 八陣圖 (Eight-Trigrams Formation).

丞相祠堂何處尋，

錦官城外柏森森。

映階碧草自春色，

隔葉黃鸝空好音。

三顧頻煩天下計，

兩朝開濟老臣心。

+Fang Xuanling 房玄齡: (Jinshu 晉書, Biography of Chen Shou)

壽父為馬謖參軍，謖為諸葛亮所誅，壽父亦坐被髡，諸葛瞻又輕壽。壽為亮立傳，謂亮將略非長，無應敵之才，言瞻惟工書，名過其實。議者以此少之。

Shou's father served as a military advisor to Ma Su, who was executed by Zhuge Liang. Shou's father was also punished by having his hair shaved. Zhuge Zhan also looked down on Shou. Shou wrote a biography of Zhuge Liang, saying that Liang was not good at military strategy and he lacked the ability to fight enemies, and that Zhan was only skilled in calligraphy, his reputation exceeding his actual abilities. People criticized (Shou) for this.

+Liu Zhiji 劉知幾: (Shitong 史通, the Zhishu 直書 chapter)

開基之始，曹、馬構紛之際，或列營渭曲，見屈武侯，...陳壽、王隱咸杜口而無言

At the very beginning of the dynasty, when the Caos and the Simas were embroiled in conflict, (Sima Yi) set up camp at the Wei River, humiliatingly lost to Wuhou (Zhuge Liang)... Chen Shou and Wang Yin remained silent.

裕又私語人曰：「歲在庚子，天下當易代，劉氏祚盡矣。主公得益州，九年之後，寅卯之間當失之。」入密白其言。

(Zhang) Yu then whispered to someone, "In the year of Gengzi, the world will change hands, and the Liu family's reign will come to an end. Zhugong will gain Yizhou, but will lose it nine years later, between the years of Yin and Mao." His words then got secretly reported to (Liu Bei).

初，先主與劉璋會涪，時裕為璋從事，侍坐，其人饒須，先主嘲之曰：「昔吾居涿縣，特多毛姓，東西南北皆諸毛也，涿令稱曰『諸毛繞涿居乎』！」裕即答曰：「昔有作上黨潞長，遷為涿令者，去官還家，時人與書，欲署潞則失涿，欲署涿則失潞，乃署曰：『潞涿君』。

Initially, when Liu Bei met with Liu Zhang at Fu, Yu was serving as an aide to Liu Zhang. Yu had a thick beard, and Liu Bei mocked him, saying, "When I lived in Zhuo County, there were many people with the surname Mao. They were everywhere, east, west, north, and south. The magistrate of Zhuo said, 'All the Mao people live around Zhuo!'" Yu replied, "There was once a man who served as the magistrate of Lu in Shangdang and was later promoted to magistrate of Zhuo. When he resigned and returned home, if people wanted to write to him, they couldn't write 'Zhuo' when they wanted to write 'Lu' and also couldn't write 'Lu" when they wanted to write Zhuo', so they wrote 'Lord of Lu-Zhuo.'

先主無須，故裕以此及之。先主常銜莫不遜，加忿其漏言，乃顯裕諫爭漢中不驗，下獄，將誅之。諸葛亮表請其罪，先主答曰：「勞蘭生門，不得不鋤。」裕遂棄市。

Since Liu Bei had no beard, Yu used this analogy against him. Liu Bei always resented those who were disrespectful, and was further angered by Yu's slip of the tongue. He then exposed Yu's unsuccessful remonstrance regarding Hanzhong, imprisoned him, and was about to execute him. Zhuge Liang submitted a memorial requesting to spare him, to which Liu Bei replied, 'I have to remove the orchid that has been planted in front of my doors.' Yu was subsequently executed in the marketplace.

-Sad story about Ji Shao, the son of Ji Kang and the not-very-smart son of Yan'er, Sima Zhong.

嵇紹，字延祖，魏中散大夫康之子也。十歲而孤，事母孝謹。以父得罪，靖居私門。山濤領選，啟武帝曰：「《康誥》有言：『父子罪不相及。』嵇紹賢侔郤缺，宜加旌命，請為秘書郎。」帝謂濤曰：「如卿所言，乃堪為丞，何但郎也。」乃發詔徵之，起家為秘書丞。

Ji Shao, courtesy name Yanzu, was the son of Kang, a Grand Master of the Palace in the Wei Dynasty. He was orphaned at the age of ten and was filial and respectful to his mother. Because his father had committed a crime, he lived quietly in his private quarters. When Shan Tao was in charge of selecting officials, he petitioned Emperor Wu, saying, "The Kang Proclamation states, 'The crimes of father and son are not related.' Ji Shao is as virtuous as Xi Que; he should be commended and appointed as a Secretary." The Emperor said to Tao, "As you say, he is qualified to be an Assistant Secretary, not just a Secretary." He then issued an edict summoning him, and Ji Shao began his career as Assistant Secretary.

紹始入洛，或謂王戎曰：「昨于稠人中始見嵇紹，昂昂然如野鶴之在雞群。」戎曰：「君復未見其父耳。」

When Ji Shao first entered Luoyang, someone said to Wang Rong, "Yesterday I saw Ji Shao for the first time in a crowd of people; he stood out like a wild crane among chickens." Rong replied, "You haven't met his father yet."

值王師敗績于蕩陰，百官及侍衛莫不散潰，唯紹儼然端冕，以身捍衛，兵交御輦，飛箭雨集，紹遂被害於帝側，血濺御服，天子深哀歎之。及事定，左右欲浣衣，帝曰：「此嵇侍中血，勿去。」

"When the imperial army suffered a crushing defeat at Dangyin, all the officials and guards scattered and fled. Only Shao remained dignified and composed, protecting the emperor with his own body. As the soldiers clashed with the imperial carriage, arrows rained down, and Shao was killed beside the emperor. His blood splattered on the imperial robes, and the emperor deeply mourned him. After the matter was settled, his attendants wanted to wash their clothes, but the emperor said, "This is the blood of shizhong Ji, do not wash it off!"

-Shao inherited his father's essence, and Shan Tao recommended him to Sima Yan. When the War or the Eight Princes occured, he died while trying to serve Sima Zhong. The emperor, while incompetent, still felt very sad for him.
