– BLAIR HATES HOSPITALS. not that it’s an unpopular opinion, but she’s got a couple memories that make her mouth feel dry, feet heavy. she’s muddling through it to hang around kem and be a good friend for a change, considering all the times she wasn’t there for him. not sure where ethan’s wandered to, blair’s messing with the hospital vending machine, trying to get a soda for free. she bangs on it twice, almost got it loose. one more aggressive shove and it topples down and she reaches for it, turning back around with a triumphant spin on her heels. lucky as hell.

     IF  THERE’S  TWO  THINGS  MAXINE  SINCLAIR  has  learned  in  life  it’s  this:  life  is  such  a  fragile  thing,  and  people  are  meant  to  leave,  one  way  or  another.  being  here  revives  memories  max  has  done  her  best  to  tuck  away  and  though  they’re  all  telling  her  kem  will  be  fine  she  also  remembers  a  time  after  her  dad’s  death  when  they’d  told  her  she’d  be  fine.  she’s  not  so  convinced  she  ever  was  after  that.

     right  now,  max  is  staring  down  a  vending  machine,  knowing  full  well  she  has  no  more  cash  on  her  and  she’s  not  really  feeling  yet  another  kit  kat  bar  anyway.  in  fact,  the  mere  thought  of  it  makes  her  wanna  double  over,  but  both  trip  and  kem  have  been  adamant  about  her  trying  to  eat  something.  the  least  she  can  do  is  pretend.  

     sure  she  could  go  home,  trust  that  kem  is  in  good  hands,  there’s  not  much  she  can  do  here  anyway,  but  between  the  bench  in  the  hospital  lobby  and  the  immediate  proximity  to  kem  should  he  need  anything  max  feels  better  staying  —  this  despite  the  dried  blood  on  her  boots  and  her  greasy  hair.

( ella purnell, cis female, she/her, muse o ) oh snap! is that LILAH GORDON-REID? they work over at high volume where some of the other employees have labeled them as THE ROMANTIC. that’s probably because they can be a bit ( optimistic ) but also pretty ( dependent ) they’re 23 and they’ve been living in woodstock for TWO WEEKS. it must be their shift because i totally hear BRITNEY SPEARS blasting from the record store. ( aesthetics: crying into her pillow until it hurts, bubblegum flavored lipgloss, a new crush every week, every ‘i’ dotted with a heart) [ THEO, 25, PST, THEY/THEM)

     SHE’S  NEVER  BEEN  SEASICK  BEFORE,  but  then  again  maxine  has  also  never  been  on  a  boat  whilst  simultaneously  trying  to  hold  down  too  much  liquor  and  looking  for  an  escaped  convict.  the  worry  is  choking  her,  and  so  she’s  standing  out  on  deck,  eyes  searching  the  dark  waters  for  nothing  in  particular.  the  cold  air  is  supposed  to  help,  but  if  she’s  breathing  she  can’t  really  feel  it  at  all.  and  to  think  she’d  been  foolish  enough  to  believe  that  the  current  weight  on  her  chest  could  become  a  ghost  soon.  

to say that josie was nervous to be there was an understatement. not only was this her greatest sneaking out ruse she had ever tried to pull off. she did the whole make it look like she was sleeping and even put a cassette tape of her snoring on blast so that her parents wouldn’t suspect a thing. and even though that was new and exciting, she was worried about so many things. what if i get seasick? what if i accidentally start gambling and become addicted? what if i gamble just once and end up going to hell because this is the devil’s game? what if i end up going overboard? so many things raced through her mind but there was a part of this that was exciting. 

josie was sneaking out, to do something other than work or band practice. in other words, this was josie’s first time sneaking out that wasn’t because she was committed to something. it was because she wanted to go. but that didn’t stop her stomach from churning on the boat from all of the ways tonight could go wrong. 

after having her first shot at the pregame, josie decided shots weren’t for her. but she did think maybe she could try to get something in her system to take the edge off, to make everything feel less daunting and scary all of the time. she turned to one of her high volume coworkers and asked, “what’s a good drink that’s like…fruity and sweet and doesn’t burn?”
