"Mixed Asian representation in American popular culture parallels how mixed Asians are often perceived by the public—as fair-skinned, ambiguous, and exotic, but whose identities are constructed through their positionality to others. In shows that are white-led, they remain not quite white, their ambiguous faces the butts of the punchline (at times self-referentially), their backgrounds barely mentioned. They serve the story as entrancing secondary characters with no evidence of their Asianness (or whiteness, for that matter), but whose likenesses cause the audience to discern whether they’re mixed Asian on and offscreen."
"In HBO/Crave’s queer hockey romance series adaptation, Shane Hollander (Korean-Dutch Hudson Williams) Japanese-Canadian background, never specified as Japanese, is mentioned three times. First, Shane’s manager congratulates his team on breaking barriers by signing him. Next, his mother (Taiwanese-Filipino/white Christina Chang) reminds Shane of the community he represents. Finally, Shane mentions to his white date he was one of two Asian boys who played hockey. Despite this. Heated Rivalry includes no gestural or cultural signs of Shane’s Asianness throughout the season. Even when Shane and his love interest Ilya Rosanov (Connor Storrie) eat dinner with Shane’s parents, spaghetti is what’s on the menu.
The lack of development in Shane’s identity is more pronounced by the pervasiveness of Ilya’s Russian background, which includes relationships with other Russians, language, an accent, and distinct customs. Ilya’s identity informs how he moves through the world, a navigation threaded throughout the season, that Shane simply isn’t allowed to experience."
From Resonate Voices
I'm so glad this gets talked about how Russianness is so overwhelmingly part of the story vs Shane's mixed race is nothing more than the way he looks and there is no cultural underpinning whatsoever. I know fandom has complained about it since the dawn of time, but it's nice to see it written about. The examples the article cites are almost all things Jacob added to the script because of how in the book, Shane is fully reduced to his "exotic" face and hairless body.

I was thinking about how we’re all treating 2025 like it’s a magic spell, like flipping the calendar will fix everything. It reminded me of an old story about a farmer on the border between Russia and Poland. For years he didn’t know which country his land belonged to and when he finally found out it was Poland he celebrated no more brutal Russian winters. But the winters didn’t care about borders. The snow kept coming same as always and it’s the same with a new year. My family in Gaza doesn’t get a break just because the calendar changes. The hardships continue and so does the unbearable weight of not knowing. Two of my cousins were taken by the IDF a week ago, and we still don’t know where they are. Not knowing is unbearable. But even in the toughest winters people like you bring light. Every donation, every share of our story, every kind word has made the impossible feel possible. Because of you we’ve survived. So no, 2025 isn’t magic but you are. Please keep sharing and donating. You’re the reason we’re still alive and the reason we’re holding on to hope for tomorrow.
if you can’t donate via gofundme you can use paypal instead please note that 110 sek is approximately 10 usd and 220 sek is around 20 usd.

I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
"drug seeking" as a patient one of the most dogshit stupid concepts of all time. fuuuck everybody look out this guy came in here expecting medical treatment. better watch out in case he goes to a restaurant and starts food seeking

i keep trying to explain why this shot is one of my favorites from anything ever - i think the explanation has to begin with the cultural context in which it takes place in. i dont believe in the dichotomy of nature and humanity but suburbia does, deeply. its people trying to escape from their own cruelty, the cruelty and privilege that allows these little escape bubbles to exist at all. i feel like talking about the performative nature of suburbia, how all of the violences that take place in it are insulated and isolated within the nice homes in secret, is just stating the obvious. we all grasp that in the american unconscious
this is a great example of the way that alan resnick utilizes body posturing. it doesnt feel natural for humans to posture and signal against threats this clearly, and when they do its usually peacocking with accessories. even then, thats a relatively casual dedication to violence. all of the aggressions we know in fabricated little worlds have to be subtle and passive as to go unnoticed except by the target. unedited footage of a bear lol - that is the animal of you that has no other desire or goal in mind besides to kill you. and it wants you to know that. so theres this violence that is made apparent by the open set-up of the suburban area. the houses are even framing, or encapsulating the shot. tearing apart the safety illusion and revealing how vulnerable you've left yourself, and it exacerbates how impossible it is to escape from what you know is coming. theres no stopping it
This is the first real "Oh shit" moment of the tape; there's already been some creepy stuff at this point, but the viewer still doesn't really know what to expect until she steps out of her car, and we get this incredible longshot.
It's such a fucking good way to do it; everything from the framing to the heartbeat to the fact that we see her discarded jacket before we see her, and it probably takes a minute before you realize whos jacket it is. Then this frame, and the sloooooooow zoom to her weird ass pose- there isn't even a scare chord when she starts running, it keeps the same weird drums that started playing when it cut to her.
What a masterpiece.
One of the most common complaints about Star Trek I saw growing up was “why don’t they use the holodeck more? If you were living in that time period and you could just make anything you wanted anytime you wanted and live out fantasies forever, why aren’t more people addicted to the holodeck?”
And then generative ai was created.
And now I get it. I get why nobody on Star Trek spends all their free time in the holodeck. I get why all the crew are putting on stage plays, and holding music recitals, and building models, and playing poker. I get why everyone was so skeptical and mean to the Doctor on Voyager. I get why the ONE TIME we see someone obsessed with the holodeck it infringes on people’s likeness rights and permissions.
Because fundamentally at the end of the day we are human beings and we ENJOY working with our hands and making REAL human connections. A person who learns to play an instrument is always going to be viewed as an artist over someone who asks the computer to generate music for them.
Even as recent as Lower Decks they were making fun of the fact that the crew were putting on amateurish plays and holding music recitals. But after living with Ai for so long and seeing how detrimental it’s been to the world… I’d much rather watch my friends put on a stage play than “participate” in a holodeck movie.
What’s most amazing about this is that it was completely unintentional. I do not for one second think that the writers of the time in the 90’s were really thinking about the larger issues that generative ai and chatGTP would cause. How could they? Text to speech back then was still robotic as heck. More likely they wrote that stuff in because it was cheaper to film on sets the owned than try to build, film, or rent out different locations each week.
That’s the down to earth logistical real reason Data is reciting poems about his cat or Riker is in a play put on in ten forward. It’s just cheaper to do that than to build a whole new set or move production to a new location.
Yet at the end of the day, I think that unintentionally speaks to a very human need that ai is making more and more prevalent to us day in and day out.
And that’s the fact nobody wants to deal with generative SLOP.
