honestly, i’ve thought about this a lot. i think that yuuri was on viktor’s mind for a really long time after the banquet — which is something he’s not necessarily used to. he’s used to doing things on his own & he’s honestly pretty selfish & self centered  so it’s pretty rare when someone else holds his attention for very long? i don’t think he was seriously planning on leaving for hatesu, but he was playing with the idea of taking off for a season. it was one of those silly ‘ i won’t but what if i did ‘ thoughts that everyone has. 

note: i do headcanon that sometime during or before that season, viktor did have a mental breakdown. that’s what lead to him cutting his hair & him coming to the conclusion that taking a break might be a good idea. he had confidence in his own abilities to take a comeback … though he didn’t take the thought very seriously, knowing that skating was really all he had? to take a break would be like stepping away from his life entirely.

so no, he didn’t really take the thoughts of going to coach yuuri very seriously. 

however, when he did see the video & it sparked something he hadn’t felt for a really long time? i think viktor loved competing but… he was tired. he was tired of being in the eye of the public, tired of searching for new ways to surprise people … & the video sparked passion in him that had been absent for a good chunk of the season. he saw how talented & passionate yuuri was & recognized so much potential in the boy who had gotten shitfaced & asked him to be his coach. 

he probably knew that yuuri wasn’t being serious but it didn’t really matter to him? the moment he saw the video was the moment he wanted to work with yuuri. he took the chance to not only take that break he had been playing with, but also find that spark that he’d been missing. 

which leads me off topic but idc bcs i wanna talk abt it it really escalated from there? i don’t think he anticipated their relationship to pan out like it did tbh. like … he did find yuuri attractive, but i don’t think he foresaw the connection that they ended up having. he did kind of roll with it when he started feeling it, though — i think the actual ‘ love’ part of it started around the time he asked yuuri what he wanted viktor to be. because he wasn’t nescessarily sure how to handle those feelings & just ‘((((’: tell me what i need to be ‘

          it was rare when he wasn’t at his teammates’ side on new years eve. the other russian skaters were his family — they would drink to the accomplishments of the year, to the time they had spent together … they would have fun in one another’s presence & celebrate in their own private way before finding their way to any other new years’ celebrations … but viktor had been invited to a party & had moved from past traditions for the evening. it was strange, but fun — he had found himself at the side of a fan. 

he had lingered near her for a bit of time. he wasn’t quite sure why, but he found a tinge of comfort in her presence… a foreign situation was made a bit more daunting when he knew that someone who hadmired him was at his side.as the new year grew closer, he stole a few drinks. he made a few toasts of his own. he cheered to his friends, hsi family, his success — his fans. when the clock struck twelve, he draws the girl closer & brushes his lips against her cheek.
