This weekend I was told a story which, although Iβm kind of ashamed to admit it, because holy shit is it ever obvious, is kind of blowing my mind.
A friend of a friend won a free consultation with Clinton Kelly of What Not To Wear, and she was very excited, because she has a plus-size body, and wanted some tips on how to make the most of her wardrobe in a fashion culture which deliberately puts her body at a disadvantage.
Her first question for him was this: how do celebrities make a plain white t-shirt and a pair of weekend jeans look chic?Β She always assumed it was because so many celebrities have, by nature or by design, very slender frames, and because they can afford very expensive clothing.Β But when she watched What Not To Wear, she noticed that women of all sizes ended up in cute clothes that really fit their bodies and looked great.Β She had tried to apply some guidelines from the show into her own wardrobe, but with only mixed success.Β So - what gives?
His answer was that everything you will ever see on a celebrityβs body, including their outfits when theyβre out and about and they just get caught by a paparazzo, has been tailored, and the same goes for everything on What Not To Wear.Β Jeans, blazers, dresses - everything right down to plain t-shirts and camisoles.Β He pointed out that historically, up until the last few generations, the vast majority of people either made their own clothing or had their clothing made by tailors and seamstresses.Β You had your clothing made to accommodate the measurements of your individual body, and then you moved the fuck on.Β Nothing on the show or in People magazine is off the rack and unaltered.Β He said that what they do is ignore the actual size numbers on the tags, find something that fits an individualβs widest place, and then have it completely altered to fit.Β Thatβs how celebrities have jeans that magically fit them all over, and the rest of us chumps canβt ever find a pair that doesnβt gape here or ride up or slouch down or have about four yards of extra fabric here and there.
I knew that having dresses and blazers altered was probably something they were doing, but to me, having alterations done generally means having my jeans hemmed and then simply living with the fact that I will always be adjusting my clothing while Iβm wearing it because I have curves from here to ya-ya, some things donβt fit right, and the world is just unfair that way.Β I didnβt think that having everything tailored was something that people did.Β
Itβs so obvious, I canβt believe I didnβt know this.Β But no one ever told me.Β I was told about bikini season and dieting and targeting your βproblem areasβ and avoiding horizontal stripes.Β No one told me that Jennifer Aniston is out there wearing a bigger size of Ralph Lauren t-shirt and having it altered to fit her.
I sat there after I was told this story, and I really thought about how hard I have worked not to care about the number or the letter on the tag of my clothes, how hard I have tried to just love my body the way it is, and where Iβve succeeded and failed.Β I thought about all the times Iβve stood in a fitting room and stared up at the lights and bit my lip so hard it bled, just to keep myself from crying about how nothing fits the way itβs supposed to.Β No one told me that it wasnβt supposed to.Β I guess I just didnβt know.Β I was too busy thinking that I was the one that didnβt fit.
I thought about that, and about all the other girls and women out there whose proportions are βwrong,β who canβt find a good pair of work trousers, who canβt fill a sweater, who feel excluded and freakish and sad and frustrated because they have to go up a size, when really the size doesnβt mean anything and it never, ever did, and this is just another bullshit thing thrown in your path to make you feel shitty about yourself.
I thought about all of that, and then I thought that in elementary school, there should be a class for girls where they sit you down and tell you this stuff before you waste years of your life feeling like someone put you together wrong.
So, I have to take that and sit with it for a while.Β But in the meantime, I thought perhaps I should post this, because maybe my friend, her friend, and I are the only clueless people who did not realise this, but maybe weβre not.Β Maybe some of you have tried to embrace the arbitrary size you are, but still couldnβt find a cute pair of jeans, and didnβt know why.
This post is one of those things that I will reblog every time it appears on my dash.Β This is so important, and no one ever tells you about it.
I almost didnβt read this but then I did and Iβm really glad that I did.
Super important
Tldr: The reason clothes never βlooked right on youβ is because models and celebrities always had their clothes tailored to fit them perfectly.
I love this post but it always frustrated me just a little because I canβt even afford to buy new clothes let alone get the clothes I have tailored. But then I remembered that a lot of things are easier to do than you think they will be, so hereβs some resources on how to alter your own clothes!
Please read this, itβs an opportunity to learn about yourself, possibly a new skill and why it isnβt you, itβs the industry.
If youβre reading this please be nice to yourself today because you do matter
we are witnessing the gentrification of the term "tumblr sexyman" in real time and it is extremely disappointing. like no, live-action white boy #265 played by ryan gosling isn't a tumblr sexyman. i can't believe i have to say this but if it wouldn't get you shoved into a locker it probably isn't a sexyman
i am massively overdue for a very very good week where not a single bad thing happens and everything is easy

we got a full redbox and now we're playing go fish with the redbox movies
I would never pay money for a redbox. if you ask politely and are very very persistent (i.e. annoying) they will let you take it away
here's my dad and i taking it away
a redbox makes a wonderful addition to your patio
for those wondering why they're free to take now, it's because the company that made those "chicken soup for the soul" books bought them a few years ago and then completely collapsed so bad they couldn't afford to dispose of or even take the blu rays and dvds out of their kiosks all over.
so any of them is free game because they're all located on other business' property and they usually don't want to have to pay to get rid of them either. so asking the store manager usually gets you the ok to pull it out and keep it.
there was a period of time right after their bankruptcy where you could put in any debit or credit card and it would spit out movies without charging you. you could even put in like an expired or deactivated card, or a visa gift card with a $0 balance, didnt matter, they'd just start spitting discs out. a lotta people raided redboxes for movies for a couple months, with some people doing what me and my brother and my dad did here, taking the whole box and signs and marquees as well. because managers sure as hell don't want a big abandoned piece of trash on their sidewalk disappointing customers. BUT they're also often too cheap to pay someone to remove it. so they just sit there.
luckily there are no shortage of freaks like us who will just take them away on our own volition. we did it all "by the book", too: we set up cones and caution tape, disconnected electricity properly, used an angle grinder to grind down the bolts in the concrete so nobody would trip on them, then cleaned everything up afterward and sealed off the electrical panel so the store would know everything is safe and tidy. though they were hesitant when we were first contacting them, they were honestly very relieved and grateful when we finally took it away, especially once they saw that we "knew what we were doing" (we don't) and look like we've "done this before" (we haven't).
the fun part: the reason why this redbox, in particular, was completely full and unraided is because the computer hardware inside had failed some months before the bankruptcy, and a failing company sure as hell wasn't gonna send a tech out to our podunk dipshit city to fix it, so it was impossible to rent movies or take any discs out. plus, for who knows how long, people were returning old redbox discs to this machine and not taking any out, leading to a much higher variety of movies than your average redbox.
there is a thriving community of redbox hackers and modders out there, as well, creating open-source software for repurposing the machines and not letting their very interesting and robust disc-management hardware go to waste. this one belongs to my brother (who was very annoying persistent and did all the legwork of contacting managers and securing permission) who is a programmer by trade and will be hacking it into a family-access movie library, with whatever discs we want. i mean the machine is completely weatherproof and has a built-in AC unit, it would be such a waste to not try to turn it into something cool.
if we get another one, i'm gonna try to mod it into some sort of art or zine vending machine. the disc boxes are just the right size for small print art or stickers. would make a great "little free library" too.
remember: the rules are made up. act like you belong there and you can get away with anything. this applies to your own life
I wish I could give the miis internalized homophobja
no but like i want them to actually feel it
you dont like her?
the dutch bike helmet discourse is still so funny. scores of indignant dutch people going on about how they dont need to wear helmets because everybody is used to bike based stuff and knows how to handle themselves, periodically interjected by people who work in emergency rooms in the netherlands talking about how many cases of bike fall related head trauma they see regularly.
dutch person: unlike you stupid americans, we have ample bike infrastructure and everybody knows how to navigate bike lanes
dutch ER worker: half of the people i treat are in the ER because they cracked their head on the pavement. my job would be easier if our country wore helmets.
getting overtaken as a pedestrian: people are seriously so caught up with themselves they canβt get somewhere 30 seconds later
overtaking people: come on girls itβs not a statue garden
We need more women characters who are Male Protagonists. You know. Slightly haggard. She's splashing cold water on her face and gripping the edge of the sink staring in the mirror for a minute. She's coping badly with her deadwife
Ok listen I get that people tagging posts with men is a rule of physics on this hellsite but it's kind of bizarre how badly some of you have failed the assignment on this one. A generic male protagonist archetype who is a man is nothing. That's just the normal cliche I'm talking about subverting. What?
Like if you are For Serious headcanoning your blorbo as a trans woman I am kissing you on the head. But I KNOW most of you are not doing that. Come on. For one dollar name a fictional woman. No being a loser does not make him a woman try again

how it all feels lately
was talking to a coworker and realised i could not for the life of me remember his name but i was too embarrassed to ask because we've spoken multiple times so mid-conversation i started concocting a plan to nudge the conversation towards the ID photos on our building passes so that i could be like oh my ID photo is awful haha the camera they use to take these has a real talent for making me look as unphotogenic as possible and then he would say oh yes me too haha everyone says that (because they do) and then i would be able to say well let me see yours it can't be as bad as mine! and he would show me his ID because we are coworkers and why wouldn't he and this would allow me to see his building pass which of course would have his name on it and then i would be able to say well yours is perfectly nice it must be me that's the problem! and then we would have a polite chuckle about it and i would have his name without needing to ask for it and he would be none the wiser and all would be well but then before i could execute this fine plan a little voice in my head went "so this is some light yagami bull shit you are about to pull" which was such a violent reality check it shocked me completely out of my embarrassment and i went "hey im so sorry your name has slipped my mind could you remind me" and he did and it was fine.
"This is some Light Yagami bull shit you are about to pull" <- Littany against avoiding small embarrassing/awkward moments that don't matter with over the top ass mind games.
also part of growing up is realizing that the embarrassing music you liked in your early teen years still goes hard as hell
You never know what color pallette someone's Tumblr is till ppl are screenshotting posts and tags
do u like mine
Oh wow.
Some people on tumblr are reading ancient scrolls and you'd never know
sometimes i talk about how awful it was to feel trapped by my daily makeup routine and how i couldnβt leave the house without putting on a full face and it played a major role in the misery of my high school experience because i had to spend so much extra time getting ready in the mornings and that followed me into my early 20s as well and it was hell and it was so incredibly liberating to go through the slow and uncomfortable but ultimately essential process of getting my bare face back and having makeup be an optional accessory instead of a mandatory uniform. and the response always tends to be ah yes of course, because of your trans and your masculine. and itβs like aha so close! actually! I think if I ended up being a feminine cis woman I also still would not deserve even a second of that shit! I think trans women and nonbinary people and every human alive should have the option to leave the house without a single cosmetic product ever touching their face! but thanks for playing!
