The two wolves inside every writer: "this is genuinely the best thing i have ever written. i am gifted. i am changed. this paragraph alone justifies my entire existence on this planet." and then five minutes later, same paragraph: "who wrote this. who allowed this. this reads like a golden retriever trying to describe grief. i need to lie down and reconsider everything." both wolves are always wrong. the paragraph is fine. you need a snack.

My writing advice is to be so, so fucking annoying with it.

That one post about the art teacher who hated this glittery glam lisa frank style a student was cultivating but was like, "stop holding back, make me loathe your work," same thing.

I give terrible advice when cannot sleep.

"This person has a secret onlyfans!" "This artist does NSFW commissions!" "This author writes porn on the side!" I cannot begin to tell you how swag and awesome that is.

The most interesting question you can ask about any character is not what do they want. it's what do they believe they deserve. because those two things are almost never the same and the gap between them is where your entire story lives. a person can want love completely and believe they don't deserve it and that belief will destroy every good thing that comes toward them in ways they won't even notice they're doing. write the gap. the gap is the character.

doomed by the narrative AND haunted by the narrative AND a secret third thing (mourned by the narrative)

stop trying to make every line the most evocative witing ever. if there's no dynamic range the reader's just going to get worn down by your list of adjectives and overwrought sentence structure. To be blunt, you need to choose carefully when you show off. You need to establish a baseline for deviations from the baseline to register. and you need to get comfortable with the fact that sometimes the sentence you need is just "He walked to the door."
