Voices of TP

We all have a vast array of experiences that shape who we are – some of shared, like homework, popular media and family, and others unique based on our differing interests and cultures. The population at Torrey Pines continues to broaden and grow more international. Nearly 3,000 students speak more than 20 languages here, and with these languages comes a variety of looks, beliefs, and customs. Among these 3,000 are others who have passions and affinities outside of the mainstream. Yet rather than being welcomed and celebrated, these differences can be ignored, misunderstood, misrepresented and even disparaged within the mainstream culture at Torrey Pines. To live up to our school’s vision of being a dynamic community of lifelong learners who make significant contributions in our world we must learn not to disrespect what is not like us. We must strive to stay open to value and appreciate the rich differences on our campus, and perhaps come to recognize that variety really is the spice of life. We hope Voices of TP helps raise awareness of the value of respect and kindness toward others, whether you recognize yourself in them or not. Diversity is more than a banal platitude. It’s the reality of our daily lives. Diversity requires each of us to ask ourselves, “How can I broaden my view to consider ideas different from my perspective? How can I seek to understand rather than judge, dismiss or attack what is contrary to my current views and experiences? How can I become aware of, and possibly even challenge, my preconceived notions about other students I see in the hallway?” HOW TO PARTICIPATE: What we need now is your help! What box has someone tried to put you in? What false judgments have you encountered? What message of respect and kindness toward others do you have to share? Write your message (double check your spelling with your photographer!) Take a photo and share your personal story about what has been overlooked or are misunderstood. Show us and the rest of TP all the different types of diversity our community encompasses!
