Demonstrative Pronouns || これ・それ・あれ Hi guys, today we’re going to look at demonstrative pronouns in Japanese! Essentially these pronouns mean ‘this’ or ‘that’ in English but it’s a little tricky deciphering the difference between them, since there are a lot of versions of these words in Japanese. これ・それ・あれ These three words are probably the most commonly used Japanese demonstrative pronouns. When referencing objects in English we would say “this” or “that”, but in Japanese they would say “this”, “that”, and “that over there”.

これ・refers to an object that is near or closest to the speaker.

それ・refers to an object that is near or closest to the listener.

あれ・refers to an object that is far away from both the speaker and listener.

If the speaker and listener are close enough together they can be considered as one entity and both view close objects as これ, objects slightly further away as それ, and objects far away as あれ. The question word for these set of pronouns is どれ and this means “which”. e.g.   あなたのカバンはどれですか。          Which is your bag?         それは私のカバンです。         That is my bag.

この・その・あの These set of demonstrative adjectives can modify the noun that follows them and are used in a similar way to これ・それ・あれ. The rule is always: このnoun, そのnoun, and あのnoun.

ここ・そこ・あそこ In regards to これ, etc. and この, etc., these words referred to things, but ここ・そこ・あそこ refer to places.

ここ・refers to a place where the speaker is.

そこ・refers to the place where the listener is.

あそこ・refers to a place which is far away from both the speaker and listener.

Similarly to the previous demonstrative pronouns, if the speaker and listener are close enough together they can be considered as one entity and both view the same location that they share as ここ、a place that is a slight distance away from them as そこ, and a place that is far away from the both of them as あそこ. The question word for these set of pronouns is どこ and this means “where”. e.g.  トイレはどこですか。          Where is the toilet?         あそこです。         It’s over there.

こちら・そちら・あちら These set of pronouns are very similar to ここ, etc., but can be considered more polite. The difference between ここ, etc. and こちら・そちら・あちら is that the latter can refer to places (locations) and can also point someone in a particular direction. For example;

ここ・here・location word

こちら・this way・direction word

Note: こちら can also be used to mean “I” or “We”. The casual version of こちら is こっち.

I actually struggle a lot when it comes to learn vocabulary. I can learn a lot of grammar rules in a day, but with vocabulary… I suck. My Japanese teacher once said that in order to completely learn something and naturalize it in your head, you got to see it at least 8 times. Learning process is so slow!

Getting the vocabulary to learn first!

From articles. This is what I usually do, because it’s easier. I read an article and highlight all the words I don’t know. 

From videos. I don’t do this a lot, because I’m not that great of a listener. However, there are some words I hear natives say too much, I try to look up for them and add them to my collection. 

Tumblr vocab lists. Well, why don’t use them? Even though I don’t exactly like categorizing words into subjects, it doesn’t work for me; but it is a great way to find vocabulary of a certain subject.

Write those words down!

I have a notebook just to learn vocabulary. The words I marked or looked up in a session, I write them in a list in that notebook. This is like my first approach to the vocabulary, since the language I’m learning is Japanese, it is useful to process the new kanji.

Quizlet!

Now, this were everything really starts. I make a deck for that clump of words and use it to study at home with my computer. I read somewhere that is better when you make your own deck instead of looking for one already made.

I have two bigger decks: nouns and verbs. These both decks reunite all the words I tried to study before, this allows me to study all together the words I recently studied and haven’t studied in a while.

I usually do not use the features Quizlet has for learning, I believe writting is the best method to memorize. I use the test option or the flashcard option, see the word in my target language and try to translate to my language. If I succeed, pass to another word. If I get it wrong, I write it down five times. I repeat the proccess of writing down words until I know them. Do not bother making pretty notes, just write them down. 

Now that I am familirized to the words, I reverse the cards: from my target language to my language. Now I have a more natural approach with my target language. 

Anki!

I pass on the deck to Anki. HERE IS HOW: XX

I do the same thing that on Quizlet, but because I’m poor and cannot pay the suscription to use it offline, I change to Anki when I’m in a place with no Wi-Fi.

I also use Anki as a fast session to practice or don’t feel like bringing my notebook or my laptop. I have the words in my target language in the front of the card. With verbs, I conjugate them in my head to a determinate tense.

Using the learnt words!

Learning vocabulary without actually using it makes the task even harder. I’m trying to have a little journal in my target language and then try to use the words I recently learnt. Maybe about what I’m talking about won’t allow me to use ALL the words I had been practicing, but with a few is enough.

I also try to use them when I’m practicing speeking making conversation with myself. I have a little flascard deck that my Japanese teacher gave us in class that has phrase connectors in Japanese so we can practice a little speech talking of whatever we think about; just say a sentence, grab a card and use the connector to say another sentence to keep talking and stop saying just simple phrases all the time. 

My vocab learning proccess it takes quite a time, I told you I’m not that good in vocabulary! Feel free to ask me for more help, for my big Japanese decks or anything else!

This language is so out of whack sometimes oh my gosh!! but I love it so muchhhhh~

So first of all, there’s the easy stuff... Norwegian follows a simple conjugation structure, one similar to english (because both languages are germanic in origin), where words do not submit to the persons that they are binded to but only to the tenses they believe in! (translation: they don’t conjugate for person, only tense).

Here’s some examples:

As you can imagine, there was a surge of happiness and contentment knowing that I didn’t have to go over almost a hundred conjugational endings for every verb known to man and then some (spanish flashbacks, sorry).

that was until I learned that Norwegian and English were more alike than I had hoped for. y’see, Norwegian, like English has its irregulars, only... it does it better. or worse? I can’t really tell how i should weigh that (probably worse).

Norwegian’s simple verb conjugation system is actually a little more complicated than it seems (but you already knew that). I’m going to try and explain this by tense.

Firstly, there are 16 “tenses” but I can easily chop that down to 3 for right now.

Don’t worry about the modal or perfect tenses right now. You already naturally use them the same way in your native language and can cross this bridge a wee bit later. Same goes for the conditional. (if not, i’m sorry but you’re gonna have to do some extra studying).

Next, the infinitive is just the book definition of the verb or the “to (something)” in any language. for example: to do, to eat, to cook.

Also, I barely understand the passive tense in English so I surely couldn’t explain it in Norwegian haha.

And lastly, you don’t need to know the imperative right now, hun.

✨ That leaves us with: Present, Simple Past, Future, and the magnificent Imperative. ✨

PRESENT:

For the present, you can just slap on an r at the end and generally be fine.

SIMPLE PAST:

The simple past is a little special, but it’s still simple nonetheless. decide wether the verb is strong (irregular) or weak (regular), and if it is weak, decide which weak group it belongs to. we’ll assess these backwards for clarity:

If it’s “Weak,” then you have yourself a regular verb and have to then assess what weak verb group it belongs to:

Once you do that, you can easily follow through with the stable conjugational flow and get through life pretty easily.

Your issue is when you arrive upon a “Strong” verb. These verbs are all irregular in the simple past and most of the time, this even extends to other tenses. They are the big bads who you must memorise and maintain in that big, beautiful brain of yours. But here’s a cute list for starters.

FUTURE:

For the future, you can be a little stylised with your answer. Im Norwegian, there are 3 phrases that are said before the infinitive of the verb and are all understood as the future tense but they have slightly different meanings:

“kommer til å” - going to

“vil” - will

“skal” - will

- The difference between “vil” and “skal” is that “vil” also means “wants to” and generally has a connotation of doing what someone wants to do (in the future). “Skal” has almost the opposite connotation and explains that something will or won’t happen even if someone doesn’t want it to.
