Luckless

“Okay, but only because you’re my favorite kitty in the whole world.” She poured him another glass of tea and grabbed another croissant from the plate and handed him the delicious treat.

Marinette chuckled, she would play his game. She wondered how red she could make him under the mask. “His name is Adrien Agreste, you should know since his face is all over the city.” If he wanted to know what she thought about him, he was going to get the truth. “He’s one of my best friends. He’s also very sweet, not to mention kind hearted. No matter how much he has on his plate, he always tries to help other people.” She covered her face as she got lost in admiring him. She was going to drop the biggest secret she kept from him. “I had the biggest crush on him for a couple years, I couldn’t even form a coherent sentence around him. He turned me into a babbling idiot, but he never noticed me. Every time I tried to confess, something went wrong.” Mari smiled and looked directly at Chat. “Though I am glad that it never worked out, because it led me to you. I wouldn’t trade you for the world.”

He munched happily on the treats in between sips of his tea as he listened to her go on about... well, himself.

He already knew what she thought of him. Kind, sweet, always willing to help others... He knew that much, but nothing could have prepared him for what she was about to tell him.

All this time... the flustered words, the nervous waves and giggles, the complete loss of composure. She had a crush on him, and he never once picked up on it. He wanted to tell her that he liked her too... that he was falling in love with her. He wanted to drop this whole charade and just tell her that Adrien Agreste loved her too, and he loved her when she loved him. What he wouldn’t give to be romantic and touchy during the day...

Instead, he slowed his eating slightly, hoping to not cause too much of a distraction, and listened to her explain the rest of her piece...

“I can tell you he definitely missed out, princess.”

She rolled her eyes at him. “Maybe, maybe not, but it doesn’t answer my question… Do you want more tea, or food?” Marinette would never admit it out loud, but she always tried to make sure he left her house with a full stomach.

“Sure, but they don’t have superpowers that would allow them to enjoy the city as you do.” She blushed at his confession. “My classmates are great and all, but they have nothing on you.” Well, Adrien was an exception, but he technically didn’t count since he was the boy in front of her. “If you want to see more of me, you can always just drop by. You know you’re always welcome over here.”

Though if he did show up on the days where she had patrol, she would have to sneak into the house a different way as to not be found out by him. On the other hand, she would get more time with him.

“More... of everything please.” he mewed while playfully pawing at the air. Why was he such a cat...”

He listened intently as she went on about how her friends don’t have superpowers that allow them to take in Paris as he could. Incorrect as she may be, she had a point... “Well, what about that one model? Isn’t he in your class. I remember you telling me a lot about him... Adrien I think his name was.” Cat, it was not fair of you to go fishing for compliments. Bad kitty.

“I wouldn’t say that, you are the one who takes time off from saving Paris to make time for me. I think you are the only one in the world who would rather see me when you could be out there looking over Paris.” She leaned over to plant a kiss on his cheek. “I think that’s very sweet, I’d even go as far to say charming.”

Mari adored him whether he was Adrien or Chat Noir, but she could really only show it while he was transformed. Even if she couldn’t be with his civilian side, she knew this would be enough for her, at least until they defeated Hawkmoth. She couldn’t let things escalate like it had before, she didn’t want to cause him to become Chat Blanc.

After pouring herself some tea, she wrapped her hands around the warm mug. “Do you want anymore tea? You were out in the brisk air for a while and I don’t need you catching a cold.”

“You can’t catch a cold from being out in the cold. Everyone knows that...” he teased. She knew she was trying to take care of him, but he could never resist making a joke with his lady, with or without the mask. “I can say from experience that what you just said is false. Plenty of people would love to spend time with you. I’m actually jealous of your classmates. They get to see so much more of you.” 

He looked away from her, out to the open; to the moon. It was particularly beautiful tonight. Even when his cataclysm shattered it before she had fixed everything, it still had an air of beauty to it in a weird apocalyptic kind of way. 

He didn’t know much of what happened then. All he knew was it was like a bad dream, but he remembered no details. Hawkmoth revealed himself as his father, who revealed he was keeping his mother in suspended animation to bring her back to life using their miraculous. It was this, combined with years of mindless obedience and the physical abuse he was just given, in addition to his conflicting love for his mother and his lady that caused him to wipe out Paris. 

Marinette smiled at him as she watched him pour himself tea. She loved the nights that he came over to see her. Granted, she saw him at school, but she had to pretend that they were just friends.

Listening to him talk about school, ate the rest of her macaroon. “As long as you didn’t fail the test, I’d call that a win.” She barely had time to study with her Ladybug duties, but she always tried to know the materials.

“I hope your friend is okay.” She took his free hand in hers, interlocking their fingers. “Whether you are in the mask or out of it, it seems that you are a hero either way.”

Mari felt her face heat up, as he confessed that he ditched out of the last bit of patrolling to come see her. “I don’t see how anyone could be mad at you, you’re too sweet.” She squeezed his hand as she grinned. He has made her into a love struck fool, but she would do it all over again. “I’m sure Ladybug understands, you never know, she could have a special someone, too.”

Chloe would be alright. It’s not the first time Adrien has stood up for Marinette after Chloe’s incessant bullying. He wondered if she thought about him during the day like he did with her... except he didn’t have to pretend his girlfriend was just a friend every time he saw her in his day to day life.

He blushed slightly at the hero comment. He didn’t think it was being heroic... He was standing up for his love; his lady. He swore on day one he would protect her, no matter how much she insisted she could handle it on her own.

“No one’s sweeter than you, princess.” he finally got out after several bites and sips. He didn’t exactly get to eat much before he came out to meet her, but he didn’t exactly mind. He knew that she would have something ready for him.

Her comments about Ladybug understanding set his mind at ease. He had to insinuate that she wouldn’t be mad because there was no way he was going to let her know that he knew her secret. Last time that happened... Well, there was a reason for things. He just had to have patience.

“Thank you, Chat.” Making her way down to her room, she set the plate of baked goods on her desk. Marinette almost sat down, until she remembered the mugs were still up there on the table. She climbed the stairs once again and grabbed the two cups. A smirk made its way across her features. “I only reward my pretty kitty with such extravagant things.”

The cool breeze caused her to hurry her way inside. Mari set the glasses next to the plate of food before pulling her extra computer chair out. “How was your day?” Finally sitting down, she took a macaroon from the plate.

He followed suit, taking one of the baked goods, and pouring himself a mug from the teapot. As he started to add things like honey and cream to his drink, he sat and tried to explain his day in the best way he could.

“Well, I didn’t study for this test we had today... I think I did ok, but I definitely could have done better.” He completely forgot he was supposed to keep his identity a secret for a while as he continued on.

“Then my one friend insulted another, and I tried to stick up for her; the second friend. The first friend just called me...” Don’t say ridiculous... That would be a dead giveaway. “..unbelievable.”
