The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: 50 pounds of pots rated an “A”, 40 pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot — albeit a perfect one — to get an “A”. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity. It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work-and learning from their mistakes — the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.

Perfection is intimidating. I think most artists blocks come from the fear of creating something imperfect.

putting it even more simply: just make shit. eventually it’ll be good shit. maybe most of it will just be shit! but you can’t make good shit if you’re not making a lot of shit.

Hello everyone! Just wanted to say sorry for disappearing for a while, life sort of spiraled for a little bit. But hopefully I’ll be more active from now on :) I’m glad so many of you are still liking and reblogging my fox paw tattoos, I’ve actually got a big kitsune inspired chest piece now and am saving up for some permanent fang implants :) Also designed a set of fox ear tattoos, but they still don’t quite look right, so on the backburner for now. Shameless plug/reminder that I’m a professional illustrator, and my thing right now is tattoo designs! So if you want a fellow therian to design your tattoos, check me out at www.marielrich.com (also a reminder to not steal my PERSONAL tattoos, if you like my fox paws commission me to make you your own original set!) P.S. I moved cross country, Portland therians come talk with me? I’m lonely :(

I’m gonna depress the hell out of all of you. ready? ok go
so, that “stop devaluing feminized work post”
nice idea and all
but the thing is, as soon as a decent number of women enter any field, it becomes “feminized,” and it becomes devalued.
as women enter a field in greater number, people become less willing to pay for it, the respect for it drops, and it’s seen as less of a big deal. it’s not about the job- it’s about the number of women in the job.
observe what happened with biology. it’s STEM, sure, but anyone in a male-dominated science will sneer at the idea of it being ‘for real,’ nevermind that everyone sure took it more seriously when it was a male dominated field. so has happened with scores of other areas; nursing comes to mind
so the thing is, it’s not the work or the job that has to be uplifted and seen as more respectable. it will never work out, until people start seeing women as respectable
but there’s a doozy and who the fuck knows if it’s ever happening in my life time
“observe what happened with biology. it’s STEM, sure, but anyone in a male-dominated science will sneer at the idea of it being ‘for real,’ nevermind that everyone sure took it more seriously when it was a male dominated field.”
Personal anecdote time! I’m in a biology graduate program. An acquaintance wanted to introduce some guy to me because his son was thinking about becoming an undergrad science major. When he found out I was in the biology department, he grinned and said, “Well, I guess that’s kind of related to science.”
I gave him what I hope was an icy look and said, “Isn’t it strange how men outside the field started saying that right around the time biology majors shifted from mostly male to mostly female?”
The guy got this look on his face like he was about to play the “just a joke” card, and then an older woman who had been standing nearby, talking to someone else, turned to me and said, “The same thing happened with real estate.” She went on to explain that, over the course of the career, the male-to-female ratio among real estate agents had dropped, and the pay and “prestige factor” of that job dropped along with it.
It’s also interesting to look at fields where the reverse pattern happens, such as computer programming. Computer programming used to be a female-dominated field, but, in order to raise the prestige of the field, new entry tests and hiring practices were instituted to discourage the hiring of women. Because, naturally, there’s no way a field can be dominated by women and prestigious at the same time (reference: Researcher reveals how “Computer Geeks” replaced “Computer Girls”).
I’ve argued this exact thing before! Biology was NEVER considered a soft science before women entered. And medicine is now losing prestige too because women are becoming doctors instead of staying in lower positions. Suddenly these mentally rigorous fields based on insight and analysis are “just memorization” or some other bullshit about how they’re not REALLY using “intelligence.”
here’s the deal with self care, for me:
pleasure, in the fun late-capitalism hellhole of present-day america, is treated like a luxury. it’s expensive. it’s frivolous. it’s guilty. if we want to eat ice cream out of the carton and be socially acceptable at the same time, we’d better have earned that ice cream. maybe by like running a marathon or getting dumped by an asshole. if we’re going to duck into the corner store and buy fresh flowers, it’s because we’ve had a hard week, not because flowers are nice. we can take a day off work, but only if we’re sick. we have to suffer before we’re allowed extra kindness.
in this equation pleasure is optional (irresponsible, even), except when it’s a balm for suffering.
however! we need pleasure to live. a life without nice feelings in it is like a diet with no vitamins in it. it’ll make you sick and eventually it’ll kill you. we know this because people with depression stop feeling pleasure, and they often kill themselves. left untreated, depression is a fatal disease.
pleasure is not optional. pleasure is not a luxury. without it, we die. that is literally the opposite of a luxury.
because pleasure is treated like a luxury, and priced accordingly, it is fucking hard to get. it’s hard to take time to relax and see loved ones when corporations aren’t required to offer paid vacation. it’s hard to buy that special face scrub or art print or pretty yarn when it costs $35 and student loans are breathing down your neck. so pleasure gets saved up for when things are really bad. pleasure gets budgeted. pleasure, once again, becomes something we have to earn by abstaining and hurting and gritting our teeth.
do this to people long enough and pleasure becomes potently associated with guilt. this thing we need desperately to stay alive is suddenly something we can’t seek out without looking over our shoulder and wondering if we’re allowed to have it.
that’s why it’s so important that we talk about self care, and tell ourselves and each other that it is okay to do things that feel good. it is necessary to do things that feel good. we have to uncouple suffering and pleasure, because the idea that we have to earn feeling good by first feeling bad is monstrous and wrong.
take care of yourselves, darlings. don’t feel bad about it.
“There’s a monster under my bed!” “Yes. He watches over you at night and chases away your nightmares.”
“There’s a monster in my closet!” “Yes. She loves the smell of the laundry detergent I use, and she’s busy trying to organize your shoes.”
“There’s a monster under the stairs!” “Yes. She collects spiders and he makes sure you don’t trip while going to get water.”
“There’s a monster right outside my window!” “Yes. He’s pulling weeds from the garden and protecting us from burglars.”
“There’s a monster behind the couch!” “Yes. He’s eating all the crumbs you left behind and hiding pennies in the cushions.”
“Oh. Then good night.” “Good night, Dear.”

I just learned what otherkin are…that’s fucking insane and those people need help. Seriously that’s ridiculous.
you need to seek help with how much you hate disabled ppl.
Really I hate disabled people? Thats why I spend most of my time volunteering in a therapeutic horse back riding facility FOR FUCKING PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY DISABLED PEOPLE? You can shut up. I NEVER said anything about hating disabled people and that’s pretty damn ignorant for you to to even accuse that. My cousin has Down syndrome and I love him to death. All I said is that the ideology for otherkin is crazy and they need help because it is a psychological problem. It is not normal despite what people want to believe.
neurotpicals are truly amazing “I know one whole disabled person. I can’t hate them” “I have a black friend I can’t be racist”
You called us insane and crazy. two ableist slurs. lots of us /are/ mentally ill. and you said we aren’t normal when it’s perfectally normal to be mentally ill or disabled.
you hate mentally ill and disabled ppl. you are an ableist. deal with it.
You know what, its not even worth my time to argue with you. Honestly, unless you know me and who I am and what I do and what my judgement and opinion is on things, keep your mouth shut. You just want to be offended and want to make me out to be a bad person when in reality I’m not, so you say dumb shit about me when really you don’t know shit except for what you’re pulling out of your ass. Every single assumption you’ve made about me is as wrong as wrong can get, but you don’t want to see that because “oh no ableist scum who doesn’t agree with my views!” -.- so I’m not gonna waste my time arguing with someone who doesn’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. So, have a nice day. Any further messages will be ignored.
May I just say that this quote,"Honestly, unless you know me and who I am and what I do and what my judgement and opinion is on things, keep your mouth shut. You just want to be offended and want to make me out to be a bad person when in reality I’m not, so you say dumb shit about me when really you don’t know shit except for what you’re pulling out of your ass. Every single assumption you’ve made about me is as wrong as wrong can get" is also an accurate response to your views on otherkin. Ignorance is one thing, hypocrisy is another.

I must be honest, when people use incorrect terminology or false facts in regards to their therianthropy/identity it’s just sort of…jarring. I am a red fox therian, and certainly know plenty about my own identity, but that doesn’t mean my experience as a therian takes the place of…
The only feline pawprint that has claws would be the cheetah as their claws are not retractable or retractile.
Thank you for the input! I’ve never actually heard that before- and I always love new knowledge :) Seems odd though, I wonder why the deviation from standard feline anatomy?
The cheetah is built for speed…not just with it’s super flexible backbone. It’s paws are basically like cleats. Their claws are more like a canine’s so they can add traction for when the cheetah is sprinting and making sharp turns. Unlike other felines, cheetahs don’t really use their claws for defense or offense, but for speed.
Thanks for satiating my curiousity! Definitely something I'll be using at my next cocktail party. Cheetahs were my favorite animal for years, you would have thought I'd known this.

I must be honest, when people use incorrect terminology or false facts in regards to their therianthropy/identity it’s just sort of...jarring. I am a red fox therian, and certainly know plenty about my own identity, but that doesn’t mean my experience as a therian takes the place of the knowledge of research. As such, I read about red foxes constantly and learn all that I can. Thus, allow me to point out some of the more blaring mistakes I see in the fox-therian tags often. 1. Fox-dog and fox-wolf hybrids are genetically impossible. While they are all canines; red foxes, domesticated dogs, and wolves have a different number of chromosomes which makes it so a fox pairing cannot produce offspring (dogs and wolves can). Domesticated foxes are not foxes bred with domesticated dogs, they are foxes that were selectively bred for domestic traits (as opposed to traits in their fur). If you identify as a fox-dog or fox-wolf hybrid, I suggest researching the canine family- there are many other canines that have a similar look to foxes and wolves (dholes being one of the more well known), and I am sure there are plenty that blend their particular personalities and behaviors. 2. Young foxes are not called pups or puppies, they are called kits. 3. A group of foxes is not called a pack, it is called a skulk (though these are uncommon). 4. On the note of packs, if you’re having “pack drama” about alphas and omegas and whatnot I suggest you look into the research on how that pack structure is only exhibited in captive wolves or wolves in extreme stress situations. It has been shown that wild wolves have a much more fluid pack dynamic based on family ties. While a bunch of wolf therians chilling in the city is probably “captive” and stressful a situation enough to argue for the classic pack structure, it’s really something to research and not take at face value. 5. The connotation of the word kitsune depends on who is saying it. In Japanese it is the word for both mundane and magical foxes, in English it is used to refer solely to the magical foxes of traditional Japanese and Chinese myth. EDIT: 6. Fox paw prints have little claw marks, as do all canines. Feline paw prints do not as their claws are retractable. See this mistake ALL too often, and way too many people call me “kitty” when they see my fox paw tattoos.
