A children’s picture book, illustrated by Rajni Perera.
Awww, looks like bi trans author Vivek Shraya has written a children’s book!
The Boy and the Bindi is a playful picture book about a young boy’s fascination with the dot on his mother’s forehead.
Ammi, why do you wear that dot? What’s so special about that spot?
It’s not a dot, says my Ammi— It’s not a spot, it’s a bindi!
So thrilled to be opening for Tegan and Sara on the Canadian leg of their fall tour!
Too Attached has two upcoming shows!
Opening for LAL in Vancouver and Edmonton. Hope to see you there!
I can’t recall the exact incident. Perhaps it was the announcement of another all-white panel, literary event, or award shortlist in my social media feed.

What does it mean to go through the world as a person of colour? For Vivek Shraya, this question had
Vivek Shraya's work often revolves around her relationship with her mother. Especially after Vivek, born male, began transitioning last year and now uses female pronouns. Recently she explored misogyny in the South Asian community by recreating old pictures of her mother. Daily VICE met Shraya at her home to talk about the project.
"While transitioning in the past year, it's been surreal to look at the photos and see how similar we look."

Vivek Shraya’s mother prayed to god for sons, rooted in her fear of the misogyny and worldly weight she faced herself imposing on any future daughters. She got her wish, and had two sons. Shraya’s project Trisha documents her personal transition by recreating old photos of her mother. “This project felt like a way to honour my mother, but also, the daughter she never wanted, or rather, the daughter she wasn’t allowed to want,” she explains.

“The song bounces on the tightest of beats and glides on slick, sexy R&B grooves. Its iridescent synths and sitar samples sparkle like jewels…”

From this week’s Songs You Need to Hear:
Vivek Shraya, ‘Girl It’s Your Time’
Earlier this month, Toronto artist Vivek Shraya made an announcement on Facebook: “35 today. New chapter. Using female pronouns. She & Her. Wrote a song … #GirlItsYourTime.” Also a filmmaker and author, Shraya had mostly only written about love in her music, while her other work explored themes like gender, sexuality, race and religion. “When I returned to music last year, I made sure it felt OK to write from a place of more honesty. The music industry has changed so much. There’s room for these conversations, of my struggles as a brown, queer artist.”
“Girl It’s Your Time” is a personal anthem for Shraya, a reflection of the bumpy ride transitioning to female pronouns. All proceeds from the single’s release will go to Supporting Our Youth’s Trans_Fusion Crew program, a grassroots drop-in group in Toronto that supports trans and questioning youth.
