Mel Brooks at the 1969 Academy Awards.
Happy 100th birthday, to the King.
In 1968, during the administration of US President Lyndon B. Johnson, Eartha Kitt encountered a substantial professional setback after she made anti-war statements during a White House luncheon. Kitt was invited to the White House luncheon and was asked by Lady Bird Johnson about the Vietnam War. She replied: âYou send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot.â
During a question and answer session, Kitt stated:
The children of America are not rebelling for no reason. They are not hippies for no reason at all. We donât have what we have on Sunset Blvd. for no reason. They are rebelling against something. There are so many things burning the people of this country, particularly mothers. They feel they are going to raise sons â and I know what itâs like, and you have children of your own, Mrs. Johnson â we raise children and send them to war.
Her remarks reportedly caused Mrs. Johnson to burst into tears and led to a derailment in Kittâs career
be kind rewind has a really good video dedicated specifically to this luncheon. letâs not call what happened to earth kittâs career a âderailment,â it was a soft blackballing. ostensibly no order came down from the oval office saying not to work with her, ostensibly, but every white entertainment institution refused to hire her anyway because of public perception and the media spin. because the important bit is that it was reported that eartha kitt made the first lady cry. that was the popular narrative, even though according to lady bird johnsonâs tape-recorded audio diaries from that day and her autobiography, she does not recall actually crying even if she was acutely embarrassed.
earth kitt was invited to the white house to attend what was essentially a ladyâs lunch where well-bred society women paid a lot of money to be entertained in the white house. eartha was chosen to attend as a community change maker who was not previously associated with known radicals. they wanted her for the optics, obviously. and she kinda realized that at the luncheon itself. so she got fed up with the first lady talking about highway beautification and planting flowers as the best way to combat the disaffected nature of that dayâs youth and requested to speak in order to say, essentially, âyouâre sending our kids to die in a war they donât believe in.â
and people were very reactive to that. both because she was a black woman speaking up to the first lady at An Event, and because there was a ton of propaganda coming from the johnson administration trying to downplay how unpopular the vietnam war really was at that point. so eartha got frozen out of the industry and even her regular jobs at clubs because it was more convenient for the powers that be to do that than to acknowledge the truth of what she was saying and divert course.
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995) dir. Beeban Kidron

The Owl House didn't invent teenagers going to another world either! By that logic, then Sword Art Online and all its isekai ilk would be called ripoffs too.
It's SHITE being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low. The scum of the fucking Earth! The most wretched, miserable, servile, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilisation. Some people hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonised by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to be colonised by. We're ruled by effete arseholes. It's a SHITE state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and all the fresh air in the world won't make any fucking difference!
Trainspotting (1996) dir. Danny Boyle
