Paris, 19ème arrondissement.

19ème arrondissement, Paris. 

Kab is an immigrant from Senegal that I had the pleasure to meet. It’s been three years since he left Dakar to try to finish his studies. Kab went to Tunisia, where he lived under heavy racial prejudice. Later, he escaped under gun fire to Libya, a country in civil war. He then crossed the Mediterranean sea in an overcrowded boat, following his journey through Italy and finally arriving in Paris, where he was arrested as soon as he left the train. Against his will, he was sent back to Italy and had to find his way to France again. I went for a walk with him to take pictures for a series of articles he wrote regarding his story to an independent media called BondyBlog. It was his first time in central Paris, as it’s not safe for him to be around in the city without papers. He was struck by that wonderful feeling anyone has when they first come here. I took him to the Trocadéro square, but since the place was under works, there was a wall right in the best spot to see the Eiffel Tower. As he stood there, it occurred to me how symbolic of his condition that wall was.
